So $318 for a sub par unit, $581 for two tone paint and a sticker... That's a red flag when a premium company starts flogging it's brand/ reputation for a quick buck. Might want to gather your trusted subscribers and contacts, do a deep dive on Renogy, see if they've been bought out or had a change in the Executive team. On a personal note, it's been great to see how far you've come over the last few years, keep living in the house bud. Fill it with people you love 🦘👍

I just bought this a month ago, working great! Only issue I had was there is a “note” on page 7 that says it has to be over 60v input from the solar panels to charge. I had it in parallel at first and couldn’t get it to charge, then called Renogy and they pointed me to this dumb note. They really should put this on page 1, other places like the I put voltage to the solar in a spec sheet, many other places. After that, I have been very happy with its performance. Solar only with 8 batteries, looking good! Also, the battery power connectors are still the same, kind of a pain, suggest using a high multi strand flexible 2 awg cable, not the stiffer bigger strand ones, as I had to fight with it for a few minutes, but at least the battery terminals didn’t break, which for me is good as I tend to man handle and break everything. Don’t know why he basically rage quit on this unit, it’s not too hard to hook up and get through the menu prompts, maybe he was just having a bad day, everybody has them. I actually liked that it was two screws to mount, once through the holes, just tightened down the screws and that was it. 60v is the key though people from the solar side, make sure you’re in series if you’re doing a couple solar panels.

One thing I love about your channel is that you are very honest and thorough in your assessment of equipment! For all the reasons which you reference, but especially the grounding wire issue (which isn't even up to code, I don't believe), this "all in one" is very problematic! I am in total agreement on your assessment: this unit cannot be recommended! I am a power plant operator, and worked in power distribution, too, for 20+ years, and I want everything electrical to be overbuilt! I'm especially critical of anything that can't be properly grounded, as I know one thing for sure (in regards to my own safety and that of others): don't be ground! Great video! Thanks for your honest appraisal of this equipment!!

7:44 he can't figure it out because his open circuit voltage on the solar panels now exceeds the maximum input allowed by the charger. As mentioned the voltage is now higher because he is getting full overhead sun. Just compare the intensity of the light coming into his shed at 4:43 and at 7:44 when he is experiencing the problem. Another clue is the warmth and vibrant color on the plywood. Grey earlier in the day when he was making connections and a vibrant yellow when the problem exists. You can see the door is open to the same position in both instances by looking at the reflection on his safety glasses.

Pretty sure you know this, but didn't mention it in the video. When you measure the open-circuit (OC) voltage of your array, remember that the voltage is dependent on temperature. So people in the north will see higher OC voltage at the lower temps. Check the specs on your panels for the temp-voltage curve.

My Lycan 5000 uses this, and it works well, but it's all built into the 268 pound (0.12 ton) Lycan 5000, which I use for emergency home power. With (8) 320 watt, 32 volts, 10 amps Renogy solar panels wired in a series-parallel configuration of 4-panel series strings wired in parallel (4s2p). I also use a dual fuel generator and utility backup when needing a fast charge options in emergencies.

I got 8 100w Renogy solar panels and charger. I had a few question due to their “clear” instructions. I tried the dealer ( through Amazon) and Renogy through their help line/ web. Never got a return message from them. With that kind of support they would not be my first choice. Thanks to your channel, I found the information after searching your past videos.

Hi Wil I bought a product looking exactly like your renogy. Its call SRNE. I took it in November to Zanzibar and installed it .It was working 2 months and then the display was broken. And because I set it already it was working another month until it gave up completely. Now I bought a Indian brand called Su Kam. That one is working Since march perfectly. Erwin

So many others would have just said "For the money it's ok to work with" but your reaction of "I had high hopes with this but I'm very disappointed with the results, I don't want to test this anymore". Thanks for the honest thoughts.

@marthale7 ... The main takeaway... 48V DC has the potential to cause serious harm vs 12 or 24 volt, because it can deliver a decent shock if not handled correctly. As where it would take you doing something on purpose to receive a shock from 12 or 24 volts... SO people that are only use to using 12 or 24 volts... that move up to 48 volts may have developed poor practices, like laying your body across terminals when working on or around the batteries... It only takes a sweaty arm laid across a few terminals on a 48V system to learn the hard way.

LOL...Will, I just spent a day tearing an old Xantrax (Scneider) XW6048 off the wall at my ex's house that we put in 10 years ago. Guess why? DC Undervoltage Error. Haha...I don't know what was wrong, but I really laughed at how light that Renogy or the Growatt is because even after I removed the charge controllers on the Xantrax that weighed 40 lbs the actual inverter must have still weighed 100 lbs and nearly crushed me and my wife and son under neath the darn thing. What a near disaster! The simplicity and lower weight of these models is amazing. I was about to tear the solar panels off her house and give up due to fact they never would go along with trying to put some heavy, noisy humming thing back up there, but wow things have change. Got me thinking! Thanks for the great review! DC Undervolt...LOL

Finally bought the Growatt a couple of days ago, after learning about this Renogy option last week. Anyone that might need 240v split phase in the future; this Renogy is NOT for you. It cannot be paralleled. While they may change this [in the future], this version does not support this. Something I think would be more visible in the stats and reviews. I went with the Growatt over the MPP because the Growatt includes the parallel boards in each inverter; while it is a costly add on with the MPP. If I ever want/need 240v, and I think it is only a matter of time, I will have the most cost effective option. Best of luck in finding what will work best for you and your needs; and thank you Will, for sharing so much of your knowledge and experience with all of us just starting out. Peace

Renogy makes a few cool devices; apparently this is not one of them. After a few tries to make the thing work right, I'd toss it out on the back lawn and experiment on it with some bird shot. The smart option is to return it; the fun option is to experiment. :)

Excellent video -0- i am very happy to know that our guys in LA testing this was correct .... they had the exact same issue that you did plus about 12 more ... NO GROUND -- WTH ... and no bottom mounting hardware .... the lugs are poor at best and right there that eliminated it for us to use ... On top of that Renogy got lazy and use the old screens ... AND for some reason the thing just doesn't seem to be able to get to 80A of AC charging out of it .... also - some of the things int he manual are simply not right .. its like they copied pasted and then messed up a few settings .. you make changes and nothing happen ... etc etc ... SOOOOO from where we set .. MPP is still the best out there .... I know you are excited about GroWatt but I think once you get past the sexiness you will go back to MPP also ...

You are right with the assessment of the unit. But inverters do not offer you a Ground at its output for a reason. The Neutral-Ground bonding must be done in the Panel you are feeding in according local regulations. Codes of how to bond Ground may be very different from place to place.

I just installed one of these with a SOK 5.12kW battery and a 1500W array (2 parallel strings of 3 panels) and had zero issues. Ran a DeWalt Mitre Saw off of it which pulls 29 amps at start and 12 amps while cutting. Inverter capacity is fine. Panels charge the battery as rated. AC input also tested working. After this video review made me nervous I have checked everything and I can't find a single thing wrong with how this unit works. This Will Prowse should read the manual next time.
