I'm convinced that the false nostalgia is more about mourning lost futures than a sense of actual experiences. A return to the end of history. Vaporwave aesthetics are exactly the same, and the thing is I think they're *comforting* more than anything else. They evoke a time when we genuinely believed capitalism had triumphed, this was a good thing, and there'd be suburban lawns and shopping malls into the future forever. Both citypop and vaporwave are incredibly nostalgic because they're both incredibly retrofuturistic. The latter intentionally so, and the former by accident.

glad you picked this version to sing! the lyrics written by caitlyn myers was an awesome translation. usually when you change a song from japanese to english it sounds a little bit janky or stilted; this version has none of that. probably one of the best english versions i've ever heard. love your cover by the way

I think that tends to happen when people try too hard to stay super faithful to the original, without embracing the inherent creativity involved in translation. It's a problem I see in a lot of translations, but it's especially pronounced in music since you then have to fit a stilted translation to a music beat that just highlights even more how stilted it is. It's not an easy thing to do by any means and I applaud people for trying, though. My favorite covers are often the ones that focus less on strictly being faithful to the original and more on rewriting the song "as if" it had originally been written in the target language, while maintaining the original spirit and message of original. Of course, the more vague and poetic the original lyrics are, the harder it is to pull this off. Every now and then you get a translation that's both faithful and sounds natural, and those are really special. I think Rebecca Watanabe's cover of Kenshi Yonezu's "Lemon" is one such example.

Wow Will, a lot of work went into this. There are extra harmonies, a spot where you doubled at a lower octave (you've got a range there), and also extra backup oohs and aahs (and maybe even some whispered Japanese?). I also appreciate the interpretation - subtle cries, softer deliveries in parts, slides and other ornamentations, sometimes belting sometimes falsetto; you are a skilled and creative vocalist indeed.
