Willys L Head Problems, Cam Gear Removal, Rebuild Tips

In this video I am on to my next L head rebuild. MB block with a CJ3A head and many problems from last rebuild. After many questions about it I will show you how I remove the Willys L and F head cam timing gear. Finally I dig out another block and start at the beginning to get it rebuilt properly.

I never heard it run, but I understand from others that it did run. With no oil on the timing gears, and a mess of other problems it wouldn't have run for long.

Can't believe the ignorance with the cut seats!.. The MB/GPW blocks are getting rare up here. Hopefully it can be saved. Glad someone knowledgeable is on the case...

I am going to keep the MB block as a core and replace it with the CJ2A block. When I get motivated perhaps I will sleeve the MB block and get it in shape. But for now I am going to concentrate on getting a good CJ2A motor rebuilt.

amazing video !! do you know where I might find a detailed body plan for the cj5? and would it be sacrilege to put a 3A tub on a CJ5 frame lol? , my god, I'm so glad I don't need to do engine work

I guess just us folks remember that back in the day gasoline had lead in it to cushion between the cast iron seats and valves.

I see this all the time. New folks seem to think they can split and remove a seat that isn't there. At least they learned after 2 instead of cutting all 8

when an engine is rebuilt, does the oil jet get replaced? can i remove mine to clean it up with carb cleaner before i reinstall my timing cover? When i removed the timing cover, the gears especially the cam gear, didn't appear to be very oily.... I want to make sure they are getting oil when i put it back on. The reason i removed it was to put a different one on. Somebody had removed the oil line that goes up to the filter and welded it shut. So I found a different cover. But Now im concerned about the oil jet working..... Please advise.....

pull out your oil jet and spray cleaner thru and make sure it is squirting. If you have the .070" early jet change it to the later .040" jet. You can braze or weld hole shut and drill to .040. There was an oiling problem with the larger jet, it was taking oil away from #1 rod and causing bearing problems, so they changed to the smaller jet and that fixed the problem.

Yes the last rebuild on this engine is terrible. I am sure they quickly rebuilt it just to sell the jeep. I will get it sorted out and back in good shape in the coming videos.
