A few others blocked it. Obviously some people blocked it from behind, but that doesn't really count. Ralph Sampson (7'4) blocked it. Robert Parish (7'1) blocked it. Bill Willoughby (6'8) might have blocked it but it might have been a dunk. Hakeem Olajuwon (7') blocked it. Nate Thurmond (7') blockd it. Manute Bol (7'7) blocked it. Honorable mention: Artis Gilmore (7'2) had a crazy high block of it but was goaltending. Wilt is the only one who blocked it multiple times (on video) that we've seen and that was Wilt after his knee injury. There are 4 videos of him blocking it (3 here). There's a number of wilts contemporaries from his era that say, there's many that claim they could touch the top of the backboard but Wilt was one that could do it? He was measured at three times for his vertical and the highest was just before his knee injury and it was 13 foot 3 inches? What's amazing about Wilt, he blocked Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 23 times in one playoff season and how many could claim that achievement?

Someone recorded him jumping 12-6,then 13-0 ,then 12-9(at different times). His reach was 9-6, so 12-6 would put vertical jump at 36 inches,13-0 would put his jump at 42 inches, and 12-9 would be at 39 inches.
@paul_devos
@paul_devos Жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is a non-sensationalized view of Wilt's actually vertical jump. High Jumping involves contorting your limbs to get over a bar. A basketball leap doesn't care about your limbs, only the final stretch. Which also is a factor as most players do a "standing reach" without the shoulder joint extended, but once they do a vertical jump, they extend the shoulder at max reach to try to touch the apex height. That said, a much better measure of jumping ability only is the starting position of the head (e.g. height, Wilt a shade over 7'1") and Wilt's position of his head at the apex of his jump. There's no historical record of anyone, even at Kansas under Phog Allen that said Wilt hit his head on the rim. They also stated and Wilt stated that he could indeed dunk on 12 foot basket, but it was *difficult* (took many attempts). From my dunking experience you generally need about 4-5" above the rim provided you can palm a ball to dunk it (Wilt could easily palm a basketball). So Wilt's "apex" hand position at Kansas for those 12-foot basket dunks would have been at 12'5". Wilt's standing reach was 9'6" according to many sources. That means Wilt had a 35 inch vertical at Kansas to dunk that basketball. That's the same vertical as Blake Griffin btw. I've scoured for years for photos of Wilt's head on blocked shots and dunks -- again, looking for someone who's said or a photo of Wilt's head even with the rim. I've found a couple where he is very close to touching the rim with his head or if beside the rim, even with the rim. That said, for a 7'1" man, that would again be 35 inch vertical. I've got about 5 photos that show this and given all the prior claims of dunks from Kansas that also seems about right. The only problem with "35" is people's distorted view of how impressive 35 inches really is. Again, Blake Griffin, Darryl Dawkins, Roy Hinson, Larry Nance, Dwight Howard are a few of a very few number of guys that are 6'9 or taller and able to jump that high. For reference (or to pull/scrape the data set) you can go to the NBA.com's stats and sort for C's and PFs and get their vertical jumps here: www.nba.com/stats/draft/combine-strength-agility?CF=POSITION*E*C&SeasonYear=2000-01&dir=1&sort=MAX_VERTICAL_LEAP The average NBA vertical is about 28". Keep in mind, many players who can't jump well in these events don't jump at all. But another good proxy to measure the truth about anyone's vertical jump is where their head position is relative to the rim given their height. e.g. You'll see online that Shawn Kemp's vertical is 41 inches and he's 6'10. Where does that mean his head should be on his dunks? 3 inches above the rim. I've yet to find a photo with Shawn Kemp's head near that level. I *have* seen 15-20+ dunks where Kemp's head is about 4-5 inches below the rim. That's 33-34 inches. Again, Blake Griffin's vertical is 35.5 inches. Watch the dunks of Blake Griffin and tell me he's not getting higher than Kemp or Giannis and many others who purportedly have 40-50 inch verticals. Blake Griffin NBA Combine: www.nba.com/stats/draft/combine-strength-agility?SeasonYear=2009-10 When I went to Kansas, they had a 12-foot basket in the gym, because Dr. Phog Allen was advocating the 12-foot basket. I used to dunk on that basket. It was an effort, but I could do it.” - Wilt Chamberlain

@@paul_devos there's a dude on youtube who's 6'10 and can press up his shoulder against the rim, head easily above the rim and his hand touches top of the backboard. His vert is in the 40s. @@paul_devos All that seems correct, in so far as it goes. However, you simply do not get (or very rarely get) the max vertical in game situations, in the way the max vertical is measured in the isolated way it is. Which is not pre-exhausted by playing in an actual game, or the need to save on energy for the legs for the rest of the game, and etc. Just as we never saw anything consistent with Jordan's alleged (and widely quoted and believed) 48 inch max vertical in game situations.

The only time I've ever seen Wilt himself talk about how strong he was happened in 2 1997 interviews when he was 61. He claimed that at his best he could bench press almost 600 pounds . I assume he meant he could bench press 585 pounds which is 6 plates . I have no idea where the 500 pound or 650 pound claim came from. He’s 7’1….his head at rim level or slightly higher would mean he has a 35-40 inch vertical which is still high but not unheard of. His hand reaching as high as the man explains has more to do with how long his arms and hands were, that would be vertical reach not vertical jump. Dwight Howard who’s much shorter than wilt realistically around 6’9 was very close to reaching the top of the backboard while testing his vertical reach in the show sports science(they measured his jump at 39.5 inches) which helps confirm my estimate of wilt’s vertical at 35-40 inches and not 50 like a lot of people claim

They say he had a 48 inch vertical and a reach almost to the top of the backboard when he jumped. His bench was over 500 pounds and he lifted Arnold Schwarzenegger like a child during the filming of Conan. His feats are unmatched and many of his basketball stats are still unbroken. This was when there was no 3 point shot and when they widened the lane and changed the rules.

At the top of his jump, his fingers are 13 feet 3 inches from the floor. In other words.He can reach better than three feet above the basket rim. " . 9'6 + 45 inches = 13'3 max reach. That was Wilt's standing reach without shoes on .With shoes it would have been 9'7. Meaning Wilt according to this paper from the late 1950's could reach 39-40 inches above the rim. His school buddy talked about how he would go over to Wilt's house and see him lifting 350 lbs. at the age of 13! Arnold would go to Golds Gym and see Wilt lifting HUGE weight. That is why he put him in his second Conan movie. Arnold would work out with Wilt on the set and said that he was the strongest person he ever worked out with. Arnold also watched him regularly bench 550. Also, if you had a chance to see him in person, you would never doubt it. Go see a clip of him standing with Shaq.

For the record, I'm 78 years old, so not really a young man, and a former powerlifter who watched Wilt play basketball on many occasions. I even met him at the airport and shook his hand. At the time Wilt was working with Arnold the world record for the bench press was 661 lbs by powerlifter and then World's Strongest Man, Bill Kazmaier. Wilt was strong, yes, but not 650 pound deadlift strong. He was not a trained lifter and his size and body mechanics all worked against him doing extremely heavy deadlifts. Arnold said Wilt would do 180 pound triceps extensions. Arnold was a body builder, not a powerlifter. He used 120 lbs with maximum stretch and contraction at each phase of the lift to get maximum pump and muscle growth. As an aside, when Wilt was taken to task by his long-time friend and former lover, Lynda Huey, for boasting in a book that he had slept with 20,000 women, Wilt backed off and told her, "what's a zero between friends?"
