The Miroku company goes back to about 1893, if I remember correctly. They made harpoon guns for whaling at one point, big deck-mounted swivel guns. The company seems to suffer from amnesia regarding the WW2 era, but you can bet they were producing military arms like crazy then. In the 1950's, once they were allowed to make civilian guns again, they started producing a copy of the Browning over/under shotgun and also double-action revolvers for police use and export. Around the late 1960's and early 1970's Browning's production costs in Belgium were getting too high, and they were looking around for other options. Obviously they would have been aware of the Miroku copies, and that led to a deal. During the 1970's more and more of Browning's production switched to Miroku; in some cases the machinery was packed up from Belgium and shipped to Japan. This was a period where some John Browning descendants were still involved with the Browning company. The main Miroku plants are in Nankoku city, on Shikoku, which is the smallest of the main islands of Japan. While the Citori and Cynergy shotguns and the BLR have been produced in Nankoku, there is another plant at the town of Yusuhara, up in the mountains of Shikoku, which has concentrated on the traditional lever-action rifles. The BPS shotgun production has been in a completely different region of Japan. Muzzleloaders have also been produced. The company is actually quite large, with other branches that produce deep hole drilling machinery, produce wood parts (steering wheels and shifter knobs) for Toyota, and even something to do with a type of pressure-treated wood.

John, I'm pretty much sold now on getting a Miroku. I did something stupid when I was a farm kid growing up on a dairy farm in Upstate NY. Poking through an unused spare bedroom closet in our big old farmhouse, I discovered a Winchester 1873 long gun in 38-40 cal. standing in the corner in at least 85-90% condition. I loved that old gun, left there um-teen decades ago by a grandparent or great uncle. This was in the mid-1950s. Turns out the firing pin was broken. Now for the sad part. A school chum had purchased a $15 WWII war surplus Italian 6.5 Carcano Carbine. It shot, and my 1873 didn't. How stupid I was, allowing myself to be taken advantage of. I was offered an even-up trade, with a box of 6.5 war ammo thrown in. I was happy and stupid while the other guy was happy and smart. At least the Carcano shot, I reasoned, having plugged a woodchuck offhand at around 50-60 yards the first time I took it out. Being a gun lover I'm now a small-time enthusiast-collector and have been wanting to replace that old gun for a while now. I considered a good used one, but they're pricey. I then considered the Uberti 1873, but heard negative things about fit and finish. I appreciate Japanese workmanship as a own a Japanese-made Ithaca 12ga. O&U. It's settled. I'm way more enthused about getting a quality Miroku in 45 LC. Besides, it's got "Winchester" stamped on the barrel. I've shot 45 LC in my son-in-law's S&W Governor and I like the cartridge. Your thoughts? R.M. PS: Love your dad's and your YT channel.

If Oliver Winchester could have cheaply manufactured overseas in the 1800s and sold rifles around the world he would have done it, because he was a business man first. He saw a firearms target market opportunity and he produced a product to corner that market. We live in a global economy today and it is what it is. If you want a new version of this rifle go with the Japanese manufactured rifles. It's still a Winchester...period. If you want a well made product that emulates the rifle of the 1800s go with the Italian manufactures. Either way, I'm glad they are being produced.

I use to knock Japanese made Winchesters....until I actually handled and shot one. Now I own two. The golden days of New Haven Winchesters are gone forever. If anything, Miroku improved the quality of these guns from what they were when they were last made in America. You're not going to beat Japanese precision at milling steel parts. Miroku's QC is very anal about the tolerances of their production. A lot of the steel, and all of the walnut for the furniture, is still sourced from the United States.

I'm looking to buy an 1873 in the UK. There is quite a price difference between uberti & the Japanese winchester. I really do have my heart set on the Winchester. Is it worth the extra money. Also where can I buy the leather butt wrap?

I was in the market for a new 1873 rifle several months ago. The shop I was at had both a Winchester(Miroku) and a Uberti...both 24" octagon, both .45 Colt. Having them side by side to compare, I easily chose the Uberti. No added on safety do-dads like the "Winchester", smoother action, closer to the original design, and a MUCH larger aftermarket following/availability. All that and $300+ less than the Winchester. The Winchester IS a beautiful rifle that is well built, though.

Does the Uberti have extra "writing" all over the top of the barrel giving Uberti's address, etc. Also, what safety features do the "new" Miroku rifles have that the Uberti doesn't?
