We look at the Pre-64 Model 70 Featherweight in .243, the Winchester Model 54 in .270 - Nickel Steel Barrel - the Super Grade Model 70 Classic in .300 WSM, and the Husqvarna Lightweight in 7x57. These are legendary rifles. I hope you can see from the comparisons made that the quality, intelligence and superiority of design have yet to be eclipsed. The Super Grade Model 70 is currently, easily, the best buy of centerfire rifles all things considered. IMHO. Thanks for watching and subscribe if you like what you see!

Nice to see your desire for wood and steel, preferably walnut. These days I see black plastic, and some guns finished in black chrome. I've hunted in the rain and never had problems with rust, or wood swelling.

Finally got a Mod70 Classic about a year ago and still haven't shot. Bought from a friend who was in bad health and finally passed a couple of months ago. I feel like he sold it to me because he knew I would take care of it and cherish it for many years. It is a super grade blonde maple.

I recently bought a post 64 model 70 in an auction. Usually older US rifles are rare in Germany. Everbody here seems to think there's no other manufacturers than Sauer, Blaser and Mauser. Every now and then you find a model 70 or a Ruger M77 and then they sell for almost no money. When it arived at my gunsmith's workshop I didn't expect too much with regards to the price I paid (something like 360eur or such). But I was impressed about the slick action and the crisp trigger so I asked my gunsmith to put a scope on it and do some testing with it. So he did and it shoots on a 2eur coin on 100m which is sub MOA with factory RWS ammunition. It's chambered in .270win and it will now get it's muzzle threaded so I can use a silencer. When the hunting season starts in May next year I will go and hunt for roe bucks with it. Totally under estimated rifle inmy opinion.

The new Model 70's are the best non-custom bolt action rifles on the market, hands down. Just me opinion but it's based on owning 5, my nephew owning 5 , and comparisons with so many other firearms I own or have owned. The only one close to it was the CZ550 and that is long gone.

Mike, as previously advised, Husqvarna sold their (last) 8000 design to Zoli, decades back. If I recall correctly, there are currently at least two European production rifles available in 7x57. Don’t ask me to name them at this stage on a cold Saturday morning. You don’t hear much about the .204 because (a) it does an excellent job of providing near .22-250 performance in varmint work, with lower recoil, muzzle blast, propellant consumption and rifling erosion; and (b) it is a chambering used by experienced hand loaders who are past the stage of loading maximum charges and trying every new projectile. Keep getting better! Onward and upward🙂! Cheers from NZ🇳🇿.

Husqvarna went out of the firearms business in 1972. The dirty secret of the firearms business is there's very little money in it. Winchester/USRA, Remington and Savage have all gone bankrupt at least once. The DuPont (Remington) and Olin (Winchester) families made guns because they both owned ammunition businesses, and that's where the money is. Looks like the bolt handle of your model 54 was bent to clear a scope. That was one of the changes they made when introducing the model 70.

Hi Mike, sorry you are not feeling well, I hope that you are on the mend soon. I loved this video, I have never owned any of the Winchester models on the table but now I want one. I do own a Husqvarna K98 in 30-06, it had a broken stock at the grip that was beyond repair so I picked up a blank and went to work. Over 100 hrs not including the checkering which was about 30 more hrs. It shoots like a "house on fire." Husqvarna started building rifles in 1689. They also made sewing machines, lawn and garden equipment, bicycles, motorcycles, cast kitchen equipment and many other items. They stopped building firearms in 1989. Such a shame.

The Winchester model 70 absolutely competes with many custom rifles sold today. The super grade may even be a better rifle than many custom rifles. For the price the new model 70’s built with the classic action are the best value in the gun market today. 20 years from now we’ll be regretting not picking up a few of them in different calibers.

In the past couple of years, I’ve bought four of the new production Model 70s. A super grade (280), an Alaskan (300WM), a classic sporter (25-06), and a FW (6.5CR). Each one has impressed me with its quality of materials and quality of manufacture. Not just the super grade, either. I really like the Alaskan model, being closest to the original pattern. I dare say, any of them will outperform the pre-64s on any given day.

@@scottscheuerman6170 That just hasn’t been my experience. Several have passed they my hands over the years. But, I am down to two pre-64 model 70s. A late 50s FW in .257 Roberts, and an early 50s Super Grade in .270. With their preferred handloads, they’re both 2 MOA rifles. Which is as good or better than most that I have had. The current models have much better quality of materials and consistency of manufacture. The design has been tweaked to focus that into accuracy potential. I’d say current vs vintage, is 1 MOA to 2.

I sold several guns to obtain the money for the 70s and I've gone to the smaller faster bullet cadre.

Model 70 is the most well designed working rifle I know of. My most favorite part is the trigger, even though I have often heard people complain its not crisp. I have tuned them to be very nice though. Although they are not match triggers for off hand precision shooting, they are still very shootable for hunting use. And they are reliable in the cold. If I'd need to bring one gun to a cold region for allround use on big and medium game it would be a .338-06 model Win 70 pre 64 style action.

It’s in H & H 300, in very good nick and boy am I enjoying shooting it! I have an Extreme Weather SS currently with a Featherweight on the way. I have been looking at some of the 270 WSM offerings and they are incredibly inexpensive, I guess due to the lack of demand for the cartridge. I plan to buy one and with the money saved on the actual rifle I’m going to buy good brass and components to reload for that cartridge. I appreciate what you do Mike and hope you feel 100% again soon, take care!

The major 54-70 differences: 54, being a design based on millions of soldiers' recent WWI experience with Springfield '03 & Mauser '98, used a 2-stage, military style trigger, a 180° fold over vertical safety, and a blind magazine with a stamped guard/floorplate (a cost saving move). Even though lower price than subsequent M70, M54s were slow sellers, coming out as they did on the eve of the depression. Indeed, Winchester went into receivership during this period. To stay competitive, Winchester changed trigger to a readily adjustable single stage; changed bolt handle & safety to a more-amenable-to-scope style (scopes just starting to come into popularity); a separate bolt release; machined, hinged floorplate & triggerguard; updated stock design in light of current hunter/shooter desires; a boatload of styles & custom options. And with that, Winchester was "off to the races"..."the rifleman's rifle"!

The iconic Super Grade got its start as the Model 54 Super Grade. The 54 was a good rifle, but it didn't do well in the sales department in large part due to the Great Depression. The other main issue it had was that it didn't take to the new fangled telescopic sights all that well. The safety and bolt handle got in the way of mounting the scope low. Also, the trigger was more of a military trigger and on the heavy side, and the bottom steel stamping just didn't have the fine lines that people expected of a rifle at the price Winchester was asking for it. So Winchester decided to evolve and refine the Model 54 into what would become the bolt action rifle of the century in the pre-64 Model 70. It came with a better trigger, better looking bottom metal, a better safety and bolt that allowed for the proper mounting to telescopic sights. The bolt design itself between the Model 54 and Model 70 do have difference, but at the end of the 54 production Winchester was, to the best of my knowledge, altering the Model 70 bolt to fit the last few Model 54's that were coming off the line. So the 54 and 70 had more in common during that changeover than when Winchester went from the pre-64 to the post-64 push feed Model 70. The Model 54 represents a great value in that collectors still haven't exactly gone nuts with them as they have with the Model 70. The post-64 push feed also represents great value because collectors tend to ignore them, and so many people go ick with them because of popular perceptions. The Model 70 Classic that came out in the 1990's are collector sleepers because they are the closest to the pre-64 Model 70 that one can get that isn't a pre-64 Model 70, and they as an extra benefit have the New Haven production stamping. After 2006 production shifted to South Carolina so those only say Made in the USA and then assembly shifted to Portugal. For myself my favorite caliber in a pre-64 Model 70 is the 375 H&H. That is because it combines for me the sights, smells, and sounds of the wind blowing in the trees when hunting in the Rocky Mountains along with the mystique, danger, and the drumbeats that comes with Africa. Anyway, hopefully whatever was or is ailing you is either gone or will go away soon.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns Thank you for such kind words, but most of what I know about the Model 54 comes from Roger Rule and what he wrote about it in his book on the Model 70 called The Rifleman's Rifle. I also had the fortune of seeing a Model 54 in one of my favorite gun shops. One of the neat details, and something that makes it difficult for collectors of the 54, is that Winchester would often use Model 70 parts to repair them in the 40's and 50's. So a 54 with Model 70 parts isn't necessarily being faked and could be considered factory correct. The Super Grade itself was a late addition to the 54 line, and no one knew how iconic that style was going to become. The Schnabel stock that was standard on the 54 lives on in a sense in the current Model 70 Featherweight. The 54 didn't have a long production life in the history of firearms, but it had one heck of an impact.

Wonderful winchesters and the Mauser. It's awful being an lefty but at least I've been able to aquire one left hand model 70 338win. At least I've got one and I'm a fan of the Mauser and model 70 system. My other faux mausers are lefty Ruger Hawkeyes. Even those are difficult to find these days.

That can be true within plutocracy, a society run by the wealthy. Society doesn't have to be that way though. Therefore government doesn't have to be that way. Democratize government, democratize economics. If nobody is allowed to have enough to manipulate the system than the system cannot be manipulated through plutocracy. Somehow Americans have been brainwashed into thinking that government regulation has to be strictly government regulation of their day-to-day life, brainwashed by the plutocrats who fear regulation has it interferes with their continual rapid theft. Democracy without socialism is plutocracy. Socialism without democracy is autocracy. Democratization, both government and economics is the only solution.

You mentioned interesting Swedish shotguns. Well I got an interesting Swedish OU it was made in Italy! 🙂. A real beauty. I just got an old Spanish SxS in 20gauge with double triggers, colour case hardening. I’ve been looking for one for quite a while, but they’re so hard to find in 20. This is so great. Shoulders and shoot like a dream, real quality piece. No idea how old it is yet, but definitely older than the 70’s, judging from the hard as a rock orange pad. I learned from you that because it doesn’t have that weld where the chamber meets the barrel, that it was made by people with confidence. I’ve had it to the range, and next step is to go small game hunting in a couple weeks. CANT WAIT! As for the video, I’ve heard much of the model 70. It since I always hear it’s basically an American copy of a Mauser, I’ll stick with my Mausers for now. Unless I want a more modern calibre anyway.

@@mdirtydogg no worries. So all I can make out on the barrel is "Huskavarna 1400. Made in Italy". Lovely engraving on it with a different picture on either side, and tons of decoration. Even a little on the trigger guard. Not the most elegant wood on the stock, but the fore grip is pretty nice actually, nicely made wood over all. Has ejectors, and single trigger with selector on the safety, and fixed chokes. Does that tell you anything? Since you venture out into government, will you say something about revolvers or even semi-auto pistols? Not quite so far afield. If I've missed a video, please tell me. Your opinions are important to me. Here in the Ozarks, these hills, handguns have less chance of annoying, wounding or worse the neighbors so I veered that direction. Plus the ease of reloading. Eddystone was a subsidiary of Baldwin Locomotive Works, and they were subcontracted by Remington to handle part of its contract on the Pattern 1914 Enfield. Excellent video! I recently purchased a newly manufactured Model 70 Super Grade in 300 WM. Unfortunately the crown wasn’t cut correctly, there was zero precent lug contact on one of the lugs, and the barrel was not centered despite the bedding job. Clearly major machining and inspection issues. I also read online of someone with similar issues. Clearly this is anecdotal evidence, but I have zero idea how his or mine would pass the most crude form of inspection. I agree they would be the best bargain, but only if they are functional. I intended to use it, rather than just collect it. Again, great job with the video.

@@flintymcduff5417 That’s good to hear. What year was the most recent one you purchased? As I said, it’s anecdotal evidence and not necessarily representative of all brand new Model 70’s . I love the design and I’m certain some are made to tight tolerances (when CNC cutters are new etc.), but they can also certainly use a better inspection process. Zero contact with one of the lugs is absolutely absurd. Again, I love Winchesters and we need companies like Winchester and Remington (Rem Arms) to survive. But, at the bare minimum, it’s not even debatable that their inspection process need to change.

The “intentions” are hardly ever good. And when it comes to guns, gold teeth, etc., it’s about control and domination. As you know, there is a difference between being governed and being ruled. One allows “the pursuit of happiness” and the other does not, respectively. One allows dreams to become a reality, the latter is a dream killer that is literally a nightmare come to life. The common denominators are opposed as well- good versus evil, truth versus lies, law/order versus chaos/misery. Ultimately, life versus death. So keep praying.
