A little "brain fade" on this one. I say in the video that I've never owned a Model 70. Well, actually, about 15 to 20 years ago I DID own a Model 70 in .458 Win Mag. Guess I had it for a couple of years. How one forgets THAT punishment, even for a moment, I'll never know. I think the poor guy has just owned and/or fired WAY too many firearms in his life. No, of course hunting isn't psychopathic if you're making good use of the meat. I was actually pretty addicted to drugs after a housefire, and after getting sober and being very bored, I started shooting (not hunting) and it's definitely a motivation to stay sober, a fun hobby indeed.

I remember when my dad worked at Winchester..I remember going with home when He spent days sending hundreds and hundred and hundreds of rounds down the barrel's of three model 70's ..the one chambered in 270 was my favorite and became mine 30 years latter. Dad would purchase the competitions rifles and fire them too. 2,500 rounds then break them all down and inspect for any wear etc . He was the head of product planning and development , this type of real world testing was not at all uncommon ..Dad wanted to know that when he talked shop ..he had the notes , records and hands on experiance to back up the claims. The model 70 is one hell of a rifle , anyone considering one will not be disappointed.

I have a 1949 (pre-'64) model 70 that I bought from Calamity Jane's for around 700 bucks. I went casual rifle shopping, the Model 70 being my top dream gun, and I just happened to find it on a roundabout rack, on no special display, listed at 700. I was totally shocked given how coveted a pre-'64 Model 70 is. I bought it on the spot (well not really; I was young and poor so I went home and made a list of excuses to buy it, scraped all my change together, THEN went back and bought it). I wasn't sure why it was so cheap, because those tend to go for thousands, but I found that condition is a huge influence, and that you CAN find Model 70s dip below a thousand if they're worn. Mine certainly isn't sparkly clean, and the finish shows its age, but I could care less; I love that rifle. Chambered in .270 and I took my first deer with that gun.

I enjoyed hearing your comments about the smooth Mdl 70 action. I can relate. In college I took my '93 Mauser and sporterized it as a class project. This was in the early 1990's in a free state. I knew at the time how much more pleasurable it is to work that action as compared to any of my hunting buddies' rifles. I also knew how much I didn't know about ballistics when I purchased a box of 7x57 ammo at a pawn shop with 175 gr round nose bullets and how much better it shot than ANYTHING else. 1 in 8.7 in barrel twist is what I learned about as opposed to what more modern 7mm were shooting. I had to be schooled by my own experience and those lessons are the ones that stick with a person. Just the history of Mauser's is something I can find easy to read.

I got into hunting later in life (early 30's) and my first rifle was a Tikka T3. It was a great rifle, but with the stainless steel barrel and black synthetic stock, it didn't have what I considered to be a "deer rifle" (my high school and current adult friends all have blued steel, wood stocked Remington 700s and similar rifles). Well, one day when I was just wondering through the rifle section of the sporting good store and an older gentleman had just traded in his rifle collection. Among the rifles was a newer Model 70 in the same caliber of my Tikka (not a Supergrade like John's, but it's neat because it has the BOSS system on it). I traded my Tikka in the next day and have 0 regrets. Love the Mauser action, the trigger is great, the BOSS lets me tweak it to get sub-.5" MOA without much trouble, plus it has the "classic deer rifle" look I was missing.

As soon as I saw the Model 70, I knew I had to watch. Our family's hardware store also sold guns, including Winchesters. I was in school working there during the 60s. As soon as I heard it, I knew the sound of the bolt. Knew the feel. What a wonderful rifle!

I've had my model 70 since 1974. Returned from the service and started my lifelong elk hunting passion with it. Mine was post 64 and for the life of me I can't see where the inferiority lies. It has served me faithfully from Michigan to Alaska, from wood chucks to moose and never failed. I target shoot and reload to tailor a shell to my rifle with great results. Being a 7mm magnum I did burn out the barrel and rebarreled with a shila and back to dead on. I think the snobbish pre 64 attitude is just that, something for armchair experts to write about.
@GeorgiaBoy19612 жыл бұрын
@ Burt Vincent: The pre-64 snobbery, if you can call it that, lies in the fact that they are now collector's items and heirlooms. I worked in the retail FA industry selling firearms and accessories and handled and sold plenty of the new production (by FN of Belgium) Winchesters and FN is doing a wonderful job with them. The new Model 70s are the equal in every way - and maybe even surpass - the pre-64 rifles, save perhaps for sentimental and collector value. They're superb bolt-action rifles. Not for nothing is the Model 70 called "the rifleman's rifle."

Marines hated their standard issue rifles in Vietnam for sniping that some personally bought Model 70s to prove a point

They didn't even have a sniper training program until 1966. Major Land got together with Sgt. Hathcock and put one together. The two men had served together previously. Hathcock won the Wimbledon Cup at Camp Perry Ohio and Land was a coach. Land and Hathcock wound up in Viet Nam. Hathcock was an MP. I don't know what Land was doing but the two of them put together a school near DaNang
@Iliac21127 жыл бұрын
Well that isn't strictly true. The M1D Garand was the USMC's standard issue sniper rifle from 1951, mounted with a low-powered side-mount scope. It saw service in Vietnam, and while it did well enough in a 'designated marksman' type of role, snipers weren't satisfied with the Garand's inherent accuracy, the side-mounting, or the low power scope.

I had a 1964 model 70 chamber in 30-06 I sold it in 2004 and have kicked myself for 14 years for selling it. Finally found a rem 700 that groups almost as good, if you own one of these and it can put 5 rounds in a quarter at 150 yards do yourself a favor and keep it!

Really enjoyed this video! I had a featherweight 70, in .270, many moons ago. It was a fine looker, nailtip accurate, and fit me better than other long rifles made by Rem or Sav, that I'd fired at that time. Thank you for posting this...took me back to good times afield.

Carlos Hathcock used Winchester model 70 chambered in 30 odd 6. He used the model 70 before he was in the army to hunt that's what gave him a little bit of a leg up when he went into shooting as one of the first snipers that got over 100 registered kills in his first tour. The number went up after that. But his rifle of choice was the Winchester model 70 he even used to call it the rifleman's rifle. Kind of funny hearing you say that Hickok45 brings back memories of my father telling me stories about when he was over in Vietnam thanks for the flashback brother good video good review of a great firearm. And a good history lesson for new shooters. I'm also glad to see Winchester starting to make a higher-quality product once again some of those model 94 lever guns they turned out after they went cheapie rusted like an old Datsun pickup truck from the seventies. LOL

You get that it's just 30-06 right? Pronounced thirty ought six, but certainly not "odd 6".
@echosreloadingchamber73067 жыл бұрын
Voice text put it up that way and I figured you would get what I was saying. I'm very aware how it's pronounced and what the cartridge is I've been hunting since I was 10 years old and I'm almost 50 now so I'm very familiar with the 30 ought 6 I grew up with it

I won one of these in a .280. They only made 500 in that chambering. It's my favorite rifle.
@terryedmond44927 жыл бұрын
The .280 was a gimmick round. Why carry more weight with a bigger barrel just to do what a .270 was already doing? It was a marketing gimmick to one up that fell flat.
@joshpittman60217 жыл бұрын
The 280 was originally called the 7mm express. It never caught on for some reason it's a great caliber and superior to 270 in my opinion. Terry must be new to guns and ignorant about them. Everybody has to learn I suppose. Have a nice day.
@NorthwoodsNomad6 жыл бұрын
Randy R I recently purchased a Winchester model 70 Featherweight chambered in .280 Remington. I love the Rifle and especially this clambering ( even today the .280 Remington in. Model 70 is limited production run , just due to small following ) but it’s really a hand loaders dream , vast bullet selection, and very tolerant cartridge. Personally, I think it’s the best ‘06 based cartridge out there .
@NorthwoodsNomad6 жыл бұрын
JOSH Pittman actually, it was originally called “ .280 Remington “ , but was chambered in a model 740 semiautomatic for its debut, and had to be manufactured in lower psi ammunition to accommodate the semiautomatic rifles . It had no advantage over the .270 Winchester. As a marketing strategy, Remington brought it back as a 7mm express Remington ( and it was loaded to higher pressures that was more adequate for bolt action rifles , but still never gained popularity due to the fact that the .270 had a 33 year head start and really didn’t offer any advantage to those who were already married to their .270’s . To avoid confusion with people who were trying to put the 7mm express Remington into rifles chambered for 7mm Remington Magnum, Remington went back to renaming it the “ .280 Remington “ . I whole heartedly agree with you that it IS a better round than 270 merely because the .280 can handle heavier loads and I personally think it only faltered due the fact that the .270 Winchester had been around longer and ammo is more available in stores . But for a hand-loader , or even someone who doesn’t mind paying a little extra for premium ammo , the .280 Remington offers more not only in terms of more bullet selection and heavier load choices , but it will be sure to create more interest around the campfire and anyone who owns one knows that it puts ya in the elitist group of rifle shooters
@LS-oh8kv6 жыл бұрын
Terry Edmond In the hand loading community the 280 is better than the 270 because there’s a much larger variety of high quality bullets in .284 (7mm) than in the 270 cal. Specifically the long heavy ones with a high BC for the longer shots.

I traded in a Remington 30.06 auto loader for a Winchester 70 XTR .243 in around 1979. Only the first shot was accurate on the Remington until it cooled down and kicked like a horse. I never regretted the trade in. Although it has a hooded front and adjustable rear sight I use a Bushnell ScopeChief with it. Lately I discovered the Winchester Varmint X 58 grain cartridge which can blow out the eyes of a prairie dog at 300 yards with 0 bullet drop. A real flat shooter a beauty and a keeper.

DominicDeCoco21 pretty good choice on caliber. Everything from 150gr for thin skinned and plinking to 220gr for your critters that bite up there. I bought a 700 in 06 last year. Its ok, shoots good, but i had to drop a timney in. Not sure id get another 700, maybe a howa or savage next time around.

Wow. Glad to see that you are finally coming around to the "classic" blued steel, walnut stocked upper tier level bolt action hunters. My personal favorite is the Remington 700 BDL, but I have immense respect for the model 70...particularly the pre-64's... Who couldn't? I don't own nearly as many firearms as you do, but of I was told that I could only keep one it would be my 35 year old Remington 700 BDL in 30-.06... It has never let me down. I, like you, also love the lever actions, and have owned and hunted with many, but the old ".06" would be the one...with the Leopold Vari X2, 2 X 7 variable scope, Butler Creek flip open lens covers, Remington factory leather shoulder sling.

I have two model 70s. One my great grandad bought in 1936 thereabouts for 60 dollars chambered in .270.The other is a model 70 featherweight he bought sometime in the late 50s. That one is chambered in .243 That .243 has been the most accurate rifle I have ever shot, and I still Prefer it over the .270. You cannot miss with it. My .270 has a Redfield scope and the .243 has a weaver.
