In early September 2019 I teamed up with Carl once again to make a return trip to the Wind River Range in northwest Wyoming. The route for this trip was identical to the trip we had planned for our June 2018 hike, but on that trip when we got out to Pinedale the local outfitter convinced us to change our plans due to flooded trails and lingering snow.
This year's trip was a 3-day, 30-mile hike that took us back to the spectacular Island Lake / Titcomb Basin area. This section of the Winds offers truly breathtaking scenery reminiscent of what you find in Glacier National Park and the Sierra Nevada of California. Beautiful alpine lakes and granite mountains that rise sharply from the surrounding terrain.
It certainly didn't hurt that our 'great weather' theme that we have enjoyed for all of 2019 remained intact. The skies were clear and deep blue for the entire hike, and temperatures were extremely mild for September in the Winds. With clear skies and zero light pollution the stars at night were breathtaking.
For those who have watched my other videos this one is done in the same style - an hour in length, intended to bring the audience along for the 'ride', and with a still picture slide show with music at the end. If you just have a few minutes skip to the end and enjoy the pictures.
Equipment / Gear List:
Still and Video Camera: Nikon Z6 with Nikkor Z-mount 35mm and F-mount 20mm f1.8 lens, and FTZ Adapter
Video Editing Software: Vegas Pro 16
Pack: REI Flash 55L
Shelter: Zpacks Hexamid Solo-Plus
Slide show music - Acoustic Guitar 1 by Jason Shaw, AudioNautix. www.audionautix.com
Carl kept track of our hike using the app GaiaGPS (great free app, by the way). He's made the trip data, tracks, and waypoints public so you can take a look at our trip at:

Hey! I recognize that creepy guy on the far side of the campfire at Hobbs Lake...it’s me! Great meeting you guys and thank you for the hospitality of the fire and a little of the infamous cheese spread! Awesome video. You guys probably made a good choice to come out when you did. My wife and I hiked into the basin and then pushed back but had to camp another night. That last night it rained all night on us, but we stayed dry. We camped between Eklund Lake and Photographers Point that last night in that little meadow area just before the point and had two moose come walking by camp. It made what I thought would be a slightly regrettable decision all worth it. A bull elk started bugling the next morning for an alarm clock. Just a great trip! That view as you cross those two saddles to get to Island Lake made me choke up a little when we got there. Maybe we’ll bump into you again somewhere on the trail! Happy trails!

Hey Brad! Great to hear from you. That night at Hobbs was awesome - thank you for coming over to share the fire and the conversation. My only regret for the trip was that we didn't get up to the Basin, but we really underestimated how much time and effort it would take to get up there after setting up camp at Island Lake, and how wiped out we'd feel from the hiking and altitude. In hindsight we should have just planned to spend two nights at Island Lake, and day hike up to the Basin. But it gives me a great reason to go back, and the next time we'll be much more knowledgeable. Take care, and I hope to see you out there on the trails again.

David Gray, a truly spectacular videographer and narrator! I’m from the Chicago area, so I understand the concept of living and working in the flat lands and taking trips to the beautiful mountainous areas in our country as often as possible! Only 28 years old myself, so vacation time is still hard to come by at work. These videos inspire me tremendously, and are great to watch to wind down in the evening before bed. I’m sure I’m not the only one that is sad when they become “caught up” on David Gray backpacking videos. Or the only one to wait patiently for the next video to drop! Can’t wait for your 48th video!

I totally agree - quickly becoming one of my favorite destinations, made all the more enticing because no permits are required (for those years like 2019 when I got shut out completely on permit lotteries - Glacier, Wonderland Trail, Enchantment Wilderness, John Muir Trail).

Came across your videos as I am bedridden recovering from an ankle surgery. Been so out of it and in pain but seeing your beautiful views and scenery has been perfect for me! Your filming style is so relaxing and not overly stimulating, it’s hard to explain. It’s just very easy on the senses and gives me a feeling of peace as I am recovering! Thank you!!

@@jmash41 Sorry I somehow missed your question about my pack. It’s a Gregory Optic 48 (I think actually 51L in the large size that I have). It’s a lightweight pack with plenty of stretchy exterior pockets and rear pouch. It’s a good fit for me on those 3-4 day hikes. Might be a challenge on longer hikes due to the size. Hope this helps! Thank you, Josh. Yes, the Thousand Island/Titcomb Basin area in the Winds is incredible. The only downside is that all that breathtaking scenery sure draws a crowd! (you won't be lonely in that area of the Winds). It wasn't really a problem, and didn't detract too much from the experience, but it was pretty tough to find an empty campsite around Island Lake itself. Overall though, a great place to hike.

Ahhh... Zion National Park. That's been on my 'short list' of destinations ever since I planned to do a trip there in 2015 as part of the Sierra Nevada / Ansel Adams Wilderness trip I did that year in September. In the end I decided two separate trips (Zion and Sierra Nevada) would just be too much for the time I had available, but I bought the Zion maps and did all the pre-trip planning. Your comment has made me move a Zion trip up a notch or three on my destination 'bucket list'!

David I can't thank you enough for the videos you publish. My cousin who had never gone backpacking before and I just did this trip. Thanks to your vidoes planning was a breeze and I think I have convinced my cousin backpacking is a worthwhile endeavor. We stayed at the log cabin and Sofia and Forrest are awesome hosts. The heart and soul cafe was a real treat as was the WR Brewery and the Great Outdoor Shop. The hiking was a lot more up and down than expected but the scenery more than makes up for the effort. We too missed the Titcomb basin. Anyone well into there 50's should plan for a 5 day trip if they want to see the basin. Best wishes to you and your future forays into the wilderness.

That is awesome! Thank you for sharing your trip - your description brought back fond memories. Carl, Travis and I were planning to get back out to the Winds this year (2020) but things just got too weird, virus-wise, and we eventually cancelled. Then I injured my knee on the Adirondack trip which took me down for the last couple months. But it was sure nice re-living that great 2019 Winds trip through your own, and I'm glad we could 'blaze the trail' for you a bit.

I'm fine, but I don't know where July and August went. It's just the timing of the Yellowstone and Winds trips, combined with a family trip and work stuff prevented me from doing anything in August (my typical time for a Colorado trip). I'm still hoping to get at least one more trip in before winter hits.

Hey Dave. another great outdoor adventure ... I want to mention that for hikers ... there is no better "snack" then all the green we can see ... I am herbalist and love to snack in the woods ... what that means is you can take less food on back when weight is issue ... and its like water ... you drink from the lake ... so why not eat green ... yes, it takes some knowledge ... but flavor helps ... or you can watch what the deer eat ... take care ...

We did end up getting back to the Winds, in 2021, and made it up to the Titcomb Basin. Not getting to the Titcomb Basin on the 2019 trip had always bugged both Carl and I, and it didn't take long to put it back into our western trip plans. The 2021 trip was with a larger group, was well planned (thanks to our 2019 'woes') and still ranks as one of my favorite backpacking trips. We're starting to toss around the idea of another Winds trip in 2024, and had been thinking about doing a different area - perhaps the Green River Valley up north - but your thoughts on a hike over Lester Pass and Cook Lakes will be added to the mix.

enjoyed the scenery. I definitely would have camped in that beauty for 2 or 3 nights, just being there. So the end was quite confusing and frustrating. It sounds like you guys are happy...hummm.

Yeah, it was a little confusing to us too, and in hindsight the best option would have been to spend another night at Island Lake. But while we were on the trail, we were contemplating how hard 6+ mile days had been hitting us because of the altitude, and thinking about doing the 13 miles from our camp at Island Lake to the trailhead didn't seem very smart, followed by a 7 hour ride to Denver, a few hours of sleep, then a 6:30AM flight back home. It turned out that the 13 mile hike back to the trailhead wasn't a killer, especially given it was predominantly downhill and we were more acclimated to the altitude than when we were going the other direction. But, again, that's hindsight. We do plan to make a return trip, and all the knowledge we gained on this trip will be invaluable the next time - and the next time will involve two nights at Island Lake (maybe even three!) with a full day hike to explore the Titcomb Basin.

We bought a new 75” 4k tv. Amazing to watch your 2019 trip vids. Thanks for investing in that spendy camera!!

I need to get one of those 75" 4K TV's myself! They're getting cheap enough I can probably almost afford one. Actually, when I got into the 4K stuff at the start of 2019 I quickly realized quite a few things about the new technology: (1) I didn't own a 4K display device of any kind so I couldn't watch the videos I was creating in their full 4K-HD 'glory', (2) my relatively ancient computer was woefully under-powered for editing and rendering full-frame 30FPS 4K videos, and (3) I needed more storage to save and backup all the monster 4K files I was creating. (I also learned enough about the Nikon Z6 to fill an entire book, but that's a whole different story). The bottom line was that the move to 4K was a bit pricier than just the cost of the new Z6 - a new 50" 4K TV, built a brand new 'monster' computer, and bought a few new 4TB internal and external hard drives - but when I watch the 2019 trips on a big 4K TV, especially the Winds trip, I believe it was all well worth it.

Hi, David. Found your KZbin channel from Dan Beckers channel, and your videos are, hands down, some of the BEST hiking videos on KZbin. Have been bingewatching now for a few days and absolutely love it! You have inspired me to try and do something similar from the trails that we have here in my native Norway. Can't wait for your next video, and thank you for all the great content that you have uploaded so far. You, sir, are an inspiration.

Thank you very much for the kind words. That type of feedback gets me pumped up to do some more trips and publish more videos. I've been to Norway a couple of times and it is spectacular - good luck with the videos and if there is anything I can offer just let me know.

Wow, Tyler - great to hear from you! We missed you. With you being basically 'off the grid' in our National Park system it's tough to get in touch with you. Please stay in touch - we need to do another trip together soon. I'm not sure what the plans will be for 2020 but I'm certainly planning to do a few trips out west. Take care, Tyler.
