@@WindHippieSailing I didnt want to post this for everyone to see but if you have left wires flopping around eventually they will break wherever they are fastened to something. Same with fuel lines. There are best practices that should be followed to prevent dangerous failures and sometimes amatures doing their own work may not see a potential problem. Sometimes its good to have a REAL mechanic take a look at your work and make sure its safe. Or maybe face time your father and let him look things over. I think you are awesome but im a dad too and wouldnt want you to have a dangerous situation develope..:)

Bolts go in from the top so if the nut comes off the engine stays in the same place. The thing you call the foot is an engine mount.

next time you have a difficult bolt, push string through the hole and find the end, Duck tape to the shaft of the bolt and pull it back through the hole. Only works if the hole is big enough, and youre patient enough. BUT, impressed you got it done without a lot of swearing!

Many years ago i read a book called The Dove by Robin Graham. I'm 68 now 46 years out of the Marines. Was on an LPH Okinawa. West Pacific cruise. Love the islands in zhat area. Bukh is a good motor. They are in every other lifeboat. Take off all of the useful bits from the old motor. Save the gearbox ! Remember when you are trying to start, open the throttle wide open then when the engine starts, ease the throttle promptly. Do not attempt to start a cold motor at idle. When hot, yes, but not cold. And never use starting sprays. The engine will rapidly become addicted to them.

Kia ora Holly, I spent many "fun" hours working on my BUKH 20... fantastic little work horse that had done over 10000 hours.. I lost my yacht a month ago... rolled and dismasted out from Napier in a southerly storm that just kept on getting stronger with huge swells... the BUKH 20 had run till the last.. mine was named Angus... great work.. cheers, Alex

The same thing happened to us. Elbow blew, ordered a high end SS elbow. Installed, then realized the engine had seized in the process. We have an Ocean Volt setup onboard now and very happy with it. Good luck with the engine swap.

Next time you can fish a piece of safety wire thru the mount and hole pulling it up the side....wrap the wire into several of the threads ...use the wire to pull the bolt, with washer...you used washers under there didn't you, thru the hole and install nut. These are actually sold, made out of thin, spring steel, i used them for installing a trailer hitch on truck where the bolts needed to be fished thru the frame.

Put fishing line in the hole, extract from the insulation side, tie on tip of the bolt,, drop it in and pull up the mounting hole 😉

There’s a clever little tool to put bolts in a sot like your engine mounts. I looks like a straight wire with a spring- like coil on the end. You thread the bolt onto the spring part then feed the wire up through the hole. Pull it up. Voila.

Ditch the key and just put in a starter button when you go to replace it. If you run it through an unlabeled breaker, only you will know how to start your boat.

I had a Bukh 10 in my ferro gaffer. Make sure you never leave off the "damper rubber" on the high pressure pipes to the injector, or the pipe will split. Other than that, wipe it with an oily rag, keep it dry and dont neglect oil changes. I ran mine for 27 hours flat out to get round Cape Finnistere before a low pressure system arrived, ran like a clock. Rad Bastard is a bit harsh, but fun to shout at when the time comes.

Take an Neodymium magnet. Tape to your finger tip, install a pair of thin rubber gloves. Put bolt or nut to your fingertips.

Good job. BUKH is a very solid engine.. I´ve had a couple my self, and they never failed. Like your boat, it´s made here in Denmark. You were lucky to find one on the other side of the world. Have a nice trip.

I got only a quick glimpse of the end of where the engine gets mounted but, looks like the small plug on the end, either side, you could then go right in the end with a magnet on a stick ! Also reach in and start the motor mount bolts !

Same happened to me. Raw water backed up the exhaust in a storm. The entire was turning over, but not starting, after 2 weeks, wouldn't turn over at all. Something you can do is called "pickling" where you can flush it with fresh water and keep it turning over and this will wash the raw water out. But not after it is locked up, of course. So cool seeing you doing all this yourself.
