Window Removal and Install

Replacement window install. Had an old single pane window that has seen better days, and I decided it was time to replace it with a newer one.
I purchased the following items from Home Depot and Lowes for the install:
American Craftsman 24” x38” 50 series Double Hung white vinyl window (Home Depot) for $115.00
EverTrue 5.25" x 7 ft PVC Sill Window Moulding (Lowes) $27.48
EverTrue 1.375" x 7 ft PVC Sill Window Moulding (Lowes) $12.98
Nose Cap
Great Stuff 16 oz. Window and Door Insulation Foam Sealant (Home Depot) for $6.65
8 inch Composite Shim (Bundle of 12 Home Depot) $1.97
I already had some DAP Alex Plus 10.1 Acrylic Latex Caulk (runs $2.38)
Oatey Heavy Duty Clear PVC Cement (Lowes) $11.94
I am most likely going to be replacing the brick molding around the window with PVC material or just cleaning it up and painting what is on there.

Bro- best comment ever. I know this is gonna be me. It took me about 2.5 hrs to remove an old window today and the neighbor came out and said, are you gonna be back tomorrow to install the new one…. I didn’t even know what to reply. Umm. I’m gonna start calling places tomorrow to see if I can find windows this size, and I’m sure It’s going to take me multiple days to figure out how to get the new one installed. LoL

We have a large windows 60" x 53" in our living room that is one piece. Can't figure out how to remove it without busting it to pieces. I replace over 20 windows with no problems. This is the last one.

We’ll I would have to say you would probably have consult an expert on that. My thinking is if you buy the standard window that is normally installed before siding is installed on an already sided house, you will run into a lot of work having to cut the siding back to nail the window strip to the house that normally would be hidden once the siding is installed. This would be a lot of work unless you were going to reside your house. Now on one of these windows (replacement) and on this house you could install from outside but you would have to remove the wood strip that the window would lean up against then reinstall it, which would be a lot of unnecessary work. I hope I understood your question correctly.

I would check the manufacturer instructions. They should have pretty good instructions on how to measure for a window. I believe I took three measurements horizontally (bottom, middle, top) and three measurements vertically (left, center, right) after I removed the window. The multiple measurements is just in case the window frame has different dimensions due to warp or it is just off. But prior to removing the window I check the big box store to find out what sizes they come in to get a rough idea what window would most likely fit.

Better to use the expanding foam like Cheap Joker used so that it can indeed expand in there to fill the voids and provide better insulation. Like he said though, allow for expansion (2x?; experiment first if you haven't used it) and come back later with second application. Yes, nightmare clean-up! ugh. Anyone out there know a good solvent for cleanup of that stuff? Goo-Gone, my usual go-to, does nothing.

@@mikek5486 You should only use the foam that is specified for windows & doors. It still expands some, just not hard enough to put pressure on the window frame & risk warping or even breaking the glass. The regular foam can also cause the window to get “out of square”. And the spray foam company makes a solvent that cleans the excess foam with no problem. I have even used it to dissolve some year old foam from my gun that I forgot to clean when last used...no problems. It will also clean your hands with minimal damage to your skin...follow with a hand lotion on hands.

sidqi sobhi yes that would most likely give you a more accurate measurement, but I would measure anyways before taking it out to make sure your local store has one in stock. Last thing you want is to remove the window and not be able to find a new replacement window.

Windows are nice, but you lose like 5" of window area as far as the glass is concerned. Measure from edge of window frame to glass.

It’s always best to keep the shims in. They keep the window securely square and if you use composite shims like he did they will never rot out.

Excellent point. This particular window even without this replacement style window wouldn't meet the requirement at least with a single or double hung window. There are however two other windows in this room along with an exterior door that would satisfy the code. These style windows will reduce the opening and that should be considered when deciding on a window replacement. Thanks for bringing that up.
