Microsoft treats FOSS the same way every other corporation treats FOSS which led to Linux being relevant in any way. Volunteers can help out developing it for free, and every corporation that invests time and money into developing FOSS will mutually benefit from it later on. Because without corporate backing, Linux wouldn't exist. Just look at GNU Hurd or any other truly free kernel. They all suck. Linux is what it is because of all the commits done by IBM, Microsoft, Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Google, Facebook and every other big bad corporation. Microsoft embraces FOSS because unlike Ballmer, Nadella saw the potential in letting people writing code for free, just like every other corporation did with Linux.

I spent a couple of hours in Debian 12 figuring out how to install AMD firmware for my modern GPU, then I left. Am on Nobara atm, have gamed on Arch based distros. I like Mint but I never got gaming working, though I probably missed a dependency for older games or something. Gaming really has been the main reason I've kept Windows 11 around. I've had a certain game launcher backend break a couple of years ago, it becomes a problem for online games if they can't patch. But I'm playing offline games currently so it's a good lull time in content to experiment with gaming on Linux again. I've used Waterfox before am mostly on Firefox currently, have Brave, Chrome, and Tor for niche cases. A bit of a weird case where my mother's banking online works in Chrome. I like OnlyOffice for both Windows and Linux. Would love to change back mostly or just keep dual boot for backup.

I started with Linux mint too. Dual booted for a while. Switched almost completely to Arch, and used that extensively for a few years. 3-4 months ago i completely switched to Arch, and uninstalled windows (begone microsoft bloat). One thing that really helped is letting go of the need to use proprietary windows software (photoshop, lightroom, etc). I used and learnt all the native Linux options, and they work pretty great once you get the hang of it. Gaming also works flawlessly.

I must say that sudo for Windows (the one by Microsoft) is not even sudo, it's just something that elevates to Admin privileges. Guess they called it "sudo" to make it more impressive, but truth is, the super user is by definition an user that has 100% control over the system, which also means it should technically have 100% control over making registry changes and system changes deep in the system without getting "access denied" errors. That's not the case. To do a lot of those things, you still need to use different unofficial tools such as MinSudo or gsudo which essentially let you use the System account or TrustedInstaller account. Or else, you need to load hives from Windows Setup to make those changes, it's quite tedious if I have to say so myself.

Powercfg.cpl is not the same as efficiency mode. Newer power management stuff can work with it differently For example, in energy efficiency mode for laptop users, it can use a different fan curve, tweak CPU power targets, reduce background app usage, and reduce some stuff not available to powercfg like memory speed, gpu speed. I believe powercfg.cpl only gives you the ability to cap your CPU clock speed based on a percentage, which isnt the same.

First thing I do after installing a fresh Windows 10 desktop is replace its default applications. Edge by Chrome, Mail by Thunderbird, Microsoft Office by Libre Office, Movies and TV by VLC, Photos by IrfanView, Groove by foobar2000, etc. I also install SumatraPDF, WinRAR, Calibre and another browsers, downloaders, video tools and social networkings apps. Therefore, why not simply use another operating system if I no longer use any of the tools that Windows gives me? I also hate that, with the latest Windows 10 updates, Windows 11 features are installed that I would never have requested for my system. I´ve updated to Windows 11 three times and on all three occasions I returned to Windows 10. Backup and restore (Windows 7) tool in Windows 10 was most valuable application for me. Although it can also fail.

Windows 10 LTSC, it's just 10 but with more support.

@@RaziMemeGod beware of the licensing part. Or, also, if you have downloaded it from some sites, then you may face update issues, which will lead to vulnerability in the web or malware hooking. keep this things in mind too.

Nothing in this is exciting for me. Hopefully, we'll see more changes in the future, like maybe more improvements to FE's tabs. Copilot is the one thing I hate about 23H2. I mean, it would be fine if it's optional, but MS seems desperate in forcing this AI stuff on us. Besides having to use the LGPE to completely disable it, they're also thinking of adding a "Copilot key" to our keyboards, lol. And I _really, really_ hope that ExplorerPatcher and StartAllBack being blocked in the current 24H2 build is just a temporary compatibility issue and not MS planning to block customization programs altogether. Tools and mods are literally one of the few reasons why I'm still using Windows since 10, and there are prolly more users like me. Otherwise, Windows 8.1 might've been my last Windows.

I haven't seen you do a video on win11 deployment yet. Microsoft has deprecated both WDS and MDT, it looks like they want everyone to buy Configuration Manager and per client Intune. Aside from something like FOG server, any ideas? I'm working through FOG in my lab now, but already seeing some limitations that are less than ideal. Really kind of mad at Microsoft for killing these old tools which a lot of small shops and especially offline shops needed for deployment. Next they'll deprecate step rep to really screw us.

I recommend staying on 26100.1 until the fall. Too many things get broken in subsequent builds, not least of all your customisation software. The downside is you’ll no longer be able to update Windows but who cares? You’ll have a stable 24H2 which beats any so called improvements you might get. And you can see later down the road if upgrading to the gold version is worth it.

There is literally zero chance I'm going to give Microsoft any more telemetry than necessary, Certainly not going to use their AI software that was stolen from all the creators IP without recompense and attribution. Any company that gets into bed with AI is giving me the green light to just disregard their IP rights. I no longer buy games I no longer buy movies If these big companies disregard others IP, which should I respect theirs.

Out of "some" interest, I downloaded 24H2 from the Microsoft site, put it on a USB drive and got a Black Screen of Death. End-Ex. Glad I'm on Linux Mint - absolutely no hassle.

The greatest feature for Copilot to have is allowing me to remove it
@Drew1903SG2 ай бұрын
There is no need or reason to remove. If one wants to think they should hate it, just don't use it.

I'd love to move ahead from W11 23H2, but since Microsoft backpedaled on not deprecating VR until W12 and decided to remove Windows Mixed Reality and OpenXR in 24H1, I have to stay on 23H2 until open-source alternatives are mature. 😢

I'm still on 21H2 (OS Build 22000.2538). Got that Recommended Settings set in the Tool you provide. Haven't seen any updates on that in a while. Do get some security updates, tho. Honestly, I don't really like the whole Copilot stuff. I do use it sometimes, but I don't want it in my system. the browser is good enough.

If 7z support is anything like their ZIP support then it is malware. I was waiting several minutes for it to open a zip containing many files, whereas 7z right-click was always immediate! But who cares, I switched to Debian Trixie 3 moths ago and am NEVER going back!

I just decided to take jump to windows 11 and i dont know what happens but for some reason my cpu temps are going crazy programs and games that ususlly would run under 60°C now are going over 70°C and even reaching 80°C.... I knew i should had to stick to 10, my freaking theory that every windows released after a good iteration are garbage came true again. Linux is looking quite sexy now.

My trigger to move to Linux is if anyone puts anything to do with AI on my stuff. Copilot emblem showed up and now I'm migrating. If I want something I will go get it but forcing stuff down is no longer acceptable. As far as an OS is concerned... basic, simple and non-intrusive is what I will use going forward.
