Windows 7 vs. 10 Speed Comparison!

Windows 7 is still quite a popular operating system today, despite its release two decades ago! Well, not technically... but it was still released in the 2000s decade. So, will upgrading your system to the far newer Windows 10 slow it down performance-wise? We'll test this here, with a boot speed test, a gaming performance test, a program opening speed test, and a PerformanceTest v10 benchmark test, to see, once and for all, if Windows 10 is faster or slower than Windows 7.
If you're curious, I filmed the Windows 7 segments in late April, and filmed the Windows 10 segments in early May (which you can actually see, as Windows 10 is on the right side of the screen). It took so long because I literally formatted the hard drive, installed a fresh version of Windows 10 on the same drive, and loaded on all of the same apps and files. No dual booting, no upgrading. Zero variables changed between the two tests besides the operating system. I also ensured both OS's were updated to their latest versions/had all patches installed and that the exact same graphics drivers were installed. I challenge you to find a more scientifically accurate test of the performance these two operating systems on KZbin!

So much faster and really smooth with a free virus protector that is 100% affective ( at least for now ). Wins 7 still had better and more features but that's about it. I think this video is extremely misleading but then again it is from a laptop. So maybe Wins10 works different on a laptop.

Yeah, I have to say, Windows 7 just has a feeling of being cohesive and professional that just isn't there in Windows 8 and 10. It also looks great... even 11 years later! Though, Vista really deserves the credit, as Windows 7 basically is Vista with a few minor improvements.

It was when it launched, but by 2009, the service packs had practically fixed all of the bugs. Also, computers started getting faster and could better support it. But yes, it was a rushed release for sure.

Windows 7 was the best. Win 10 hasn't stayed stable on my pc a full year, needed 3 installs since I made the recommended switch to Win 10 in december 2019. I could run Win 7 for years without any major problem, while with Win 10 I dread every time there is a update. While the Win 10 has the directx 12 support and the nice feature that your user account starts loading at boot before signing in, Win 7 wins by a large margin in user-friendliness and stability.

@@peacemekka The search bar in the settings menu is your best bet for finding options from the old windows settings screen, you can also right click on the app that opens the windows tool bar to get options to open task manager, setting up a new storage devices, etc...

I'm a programmer and had used windows 7 for 2 years and then upgraded to windows 10 and used over 3 years but when I felt that my laptop is being slow, then I downgraded to windows 7 and believe me windows 7 Is much snappy than windows 10. There is just a 1 sec delay in app opening and booting but after the app opens , it is snappy as the MacBook pro

That's depend on what kind of work you are doing ...if check for system requirement of that app and if supported then go to windows 7....but if you are in windows 10 then try to stay there because there are lot of problems migrating windows

True. I have a more low-end/entry-level PC and no matter what, Windows 10 always has some sort of inconsistency or bugs. Sadly, Windows 10 is the only compatible OS with my machine with the drivers and devices and stuff, so I'm stuck with it. It doesn't suck in every single aspect, but it still does suck and has many bugs. Also the update system is like the trashiest update system ever.

I upgraded one of our old laptops to Windows 7 (from Vista a few weeks ago) and i say it was a very great experience. I can install all the latest programs with ease and everything is much faster. I tried Windows 10 on it and oh my gosh it seemed like Windows 10 is killing that laptop bc of high everything (high cpu, high memory and high disk)

Nice! 7 is a good choice for that laptop in the modern day. You found 7 to be faster than Vista though? That surprises me, as the two OSs are pretty similar, but certainly the compatibility is much improved. I’m not sure why companies continue to support 7 but not Vista seeing how the two are nearly identical under the hood.

I still run one of my main computers on Windows 7. It's compatibility with newer programs is starting to show issues. However, it is still overall very usable. I just love how fast it feels on this not so new system, especially on an SSD. I don't plan to update it anytime soon.

That's great! I do too, though I mainly use it for its compatibility with older (and newer) games and pieces of software. I use Windows 10 on my main PC, though. Texemplar Studios woah. That’s awesome. Yeah, I was talking to TechKitten 360+ back then and still do on Twitter sometimes under their newer usernames. That is a name I haven’t heard in a long time. But yeah, my primary Windows 7 system has an i5 2400 and GT 1030 with 8 GB of RAM with a 240 GB SSD for the boot drive and some storage drive and a 1 TB 5400 RPM hard drive for games and other files.

And those specs sound pretty solid for a side Windows 7 computer-they're certainly more balanced than my side PC (the one I made this video on)! I put the specs in the description, but in short, it's got a Core 2 Quad Q6600 and a GTX 1050, with a motherboard from an HP dc5800 SFF and a case custom-made from cardboard. It actually looks quite good, though, as I spent a fair bit of time planning it out-it looks like a PS4, but taller, and with a trapezoidal cut-out on the top for airflow and to see inside. I made the case as I needed more space for the full-size 1050 and multiple optical drives, and because the motherboard is in a proprietary form factor. Back to the point: It can handle a decent bit more than you'd think, but the CPU can certainly still bottleneck the GPU. Would I be right in assuming that your Windows 7 PC is a retrofitted business PC as well? I know the i5 2400 was quite prevalent in business computers of the time.

True, Windows 10 does get to the login screen first, but Windows 7 presents the desktop a few seconds before Windows 10 does. The computer isn't usable until one can access the desktop, which is why I chose this as my metric of comparison. Also, I conducted multiple (3+) bootup tests between the two versions of Windows (only one of which was shown), and while the results did vary some, Windows 10 usually tended to reach the desktop a few seconds after Windows 7 did.

Definitely 7 If it has an i7 7700K (or newer) or Ryzen 7 1800X (or newer) you are out of luck bc Windows 10 is the only supported OS on that. Windows 7 (and 8.1) could still boot but not everything is going to function properly

It depends on which games you want to play. If you want any of the Microsoft exclusives (Flight Sim 2020, Forza, etc.), you’ll need Windows 10. Otherwise, Windows 7 will work. Though, I have to imagine that Nvidia will drop driver support for the 1070 on Windows 7 before it will on Windows 10.

Me too. Windows 10 have to much bloatware, it's photo viewer, in 7 it is fast but in 10 is too slow and is the main example of how they screwed things up, its sluggish if you have a HDD, w10 requires at least an SSD to work as expected. On the other hand the photo viewer have plenty of tools to edit photos, but that almost no one uses.

I picked up at my local computer shop a laptop that was fully stripped of memory Everything was gone and a new solid state hard drive was put in with the correct registration key. All HP programs where left out except drive software. This was an HP 5556b with the big battery. More ports than I ever saw. On start up it had some program the search for audio visual gear. Then run windows. It took me a few tries but I finally shut it down and remove. Windows 7 pro fully operating. I be DVD was slid in. No other programs. From the time you hit start it is loaded in 18 seconds and fully functional in 20. With none of the HP junk running it makes my 25k wifi act like 100 k doing everything except my canon photo processor. That program runs slow because it works 40 to 80 mb files for processing and stores the info. aND Turion(tm) II P520 Dual core processors 2.30 GHZ, ram 8.00 GB (7.74GB usable) Windows 7 64-bit operating system, no pen touch display. Super fast. Fastest I have used to date. 6 hour oversize battery is the only thing I do not like. Total cost was 70 dollars counting the 9.99 DVD in the empty slot. Didn't even have to load it. It found it on start up and hard the software to run it when windows finished. Best computer I ever owned.

You would not believe the newest desktops though. Absolutely unbelievable. I hosted a server and used it as a computer simultaneously. No bugs or errors, started in 4 seconds

I’m not sure Windows 7 will make it a ton faster alone. I would try reinstalling Windows 10 first, as it’s most likely a virus, bloatware, or even a full hard drive that’s causing it to be so slow.

Ive used 7, 8.1, 10 and 10 had a lot of issues, hangs, services issues, 100%disk usage thing...windows 8.1 had similar stuff but more usable...windows 7 runs nice but it doesn't look that great or have special stuff like great graphics or like the start tab in 8.1 and 10 n most importantly the task manager is not just ugly but pretty unusable. Theres no tab for startup software, u can only see what softwares u have running in task manager's main screen unlike 8.1 or 10 where u see background stuff running too. I really need that task manager in windows 7. Watched videos but the task manager they suggested is just an app to see stuff, doesn't really work as a default task manager with same authority, nope.

Windows 8/8.1 was a sort of bridge between Windows 7 and Windows 10 graphically, but therefore what you got was a more modern design layered upon the stability and compatibility of Windows 7. Do I think Windows 10 looks more consistent? Yes, but Windows 8/8.1 wasn't bad. Also, I do love the new Task Manager, and especially how in newer versions of Windows 10, you can monitor GPU usage. It's quite useful to monitor when completing resource-intensive tasks or gaming.

Windows 10: You need to use tips and tricks to set up windows update, or turn it off, and this is the case with many more configs. Also when you start system its gathering/sending keyboard keystrokes, recording 35 Mb of video/audio data etc. its so called telemetry service or telemetry data, you can notice it doing on every startup, doing update/defender scans, god knows what more. Ok we are not spies who cares, but it chokes cpu and memory in the background it's so annoying. There are services like Cortana etc. that you just can't turn off. It's annoying system for us advanced users who knows what's going on in the background at any time. Windows 7: Not choking your pc ever without your permission, when system is loaded it's loaded. Not showing desktop like its loaded, but choking pc in the background for 20 min more like it's on win 10. And all of the settings are available to you at any time. That freedom is why I am not going to return yet to win 10. Win 7 is not outdated and unsupported that much to drop it. Still there are drivers and everything works well on win 7, and I got full 2020 hardware. This is a subject for a long comparison, not measurable by fps only.

Also, I am quite surprised that with all of the added bloatware and background tasks, Microsoft still advertises the same RAM requirement for Windows 7 and Windows 10. I've never compared Windows 7 and Windows 10 on 1-2GB RAM (Maybe I should!), but I would have to assume that Windows 10 slows down a ton compared to Windows 7, as 1-2GB RAM wasn't too uncommon back in 2009.

I can't say for sure if your Windows 10 drivers work for Windows 7 (some might), but I wouldn't bet on it. There will most likely be some part of your computer that doesn't work properly.

I'm running q6600 (oc 3ghz) with gtx 570 and DDR2 8GB Kit (4x2GB) DDR2-800 mhz with windows 10 64bit home and Samsung 870 QVO 1 TB SSD drive. I must say it runs rather smooth but If I open about 7 or more tabs in chrome or any other browser it will just completely freeze and stop working forcing a reboot. I'm stunned that the q6600 is still performing rather well but it's not so stable when multi tasking tabs on browser. But it does run some older games pretty well still.

Maybe the crashes caused by voltage problem. I have Q9450 (OC'ed to 3.37GHz, 4x2GB DDR2 RAM). Also using Win 10 Home. Have zero problems opening as many tabs I want. I can confirm the freezes or crashes is actually caused by not having enough voltages to your RAM or FSB. If I add another +0.1v to FSB and RAM the browser or entire OS didn't lock up. I've been playing a lot with voltages, it's the culprit for the problems you mentioned above. I use Silverbench, a web-based benchmarking tool to test voltage stability. Each time Edge freezes or crashes during benchmarking, I bumped the voltages a notch and problems solved!

Man windows 7 is honestly the best os ive ever used. I still use it on my trashed picked optiplex 9020 mt which is nice and fast on an i7-4790 and 16 gb of ram. It does have a mechanical hard drive and it still runs like fine wine. Meanwhile a pc i have with similar specs with windows 10 is just unstable. Even tho i can “upgrade” it for free (which i consider a downgrade) i still choose to stay on windows 7. I know what im doing so i dont need to rely on security updates **UPDATE** I now have Windows 11 on a 512 GB SSD and man it is really a fast computer. I’d say its faster than windows 7 tbh

I think you should upgrade; with decently powerful hardware like that, you could play a lot of the Microsoft (Xbox) exclusives on Windows 10 via the Windows Store that you can’t on Windows 7 or 8/8.1.

Yep, updates come about every 6 months. Some updates break some of my older games, while some, like the most recent 2004, broke my Xbox 360 controller dongle's ability to connect to my PC. These updates, do, though, patch security holes, deliver new features, and improve the UI.

well after usage of 3 years windows 10 is really bugging me. it gets to 100percent disk usage multiple times in a day. I used win 10 for 5 years without any such issues. its always a system process that consumes disk usage. keep closing Diagtrack to fight it.
