There is a project to overcome certain bottlenecks when it comes to gaming on Linux. This work focuses on improving gaming performance on Linux by developing a new driver that integrates Windows NT synchronization primitives directly into the Linux kernel. The driver has shown significant performance gains, with games running smoother and achieving higher FPS rates. It aims to address bottlenecks caused by NT synchronization primitives, which are crucial for high-performance games and applications. Benchmarks indicate average improvement rates ranging from 50% to 150%. Now that we're seeing similar, and in some cases better, performance than on Windows, just imagine how much further it could go with continued updates.

Always felt like the idea that you can't say bad things about a reviewers' review products was more of an unspoken rule, a "don't bite the hand that feeds you" sort of deal. All Google really did here is put it in writing. It's good to be skeptical about any review where the reviewer got the product for free because they'll naturally want to stay on the company's good side to receive more products to review.
@michaelwright2986Ай бұрын
Depends on whether you regard reviewers as part of the marketing department, or journalists: are they looking out for the interests of the manufacturers, or the consumers. Proper journalistic reviewers, since the days of magazines, seem to have had the principle that if they don't have, really, anything good to say about a product, they don't review it. They will point out flaws in a basically decent thing, and get down to the point of going "Meh," but they won't slam it. The consumer can profit from this: big new product launch, loads of buzz. If one or two reviewers you follow don't have a review, you know they didn't think it was good. That's a bit different from Google (and doubtless other over-big companies) recruiting volunteer marketers.

I can confirm the performance numbers regarding windows vs linux. I've played Witcher 3 for a year on WIndows 11 and the performance was really bad, but I wanted to play it and didn't want to spend more money on another system. So I ran it on my Samsung ultrabook with an Intel GPU. Framerate was about 25 frames on average on 720p, barly ever going above it and with a substantial input lag. Now under CachyOS the game runs with 35 to 40 frames while it's can also run full ambient occlusion plus anti alising and has more details enabled (because there was a game update which pushed a lot more details as minimum settings). If I would have set those details before I would get like 10 frames max under WIndows.

When I tried Ventoy for a second time to copy data off the hard drive I couldn't, SBAT error (Windows had applied this update as I was working on the system). I had to boot to a separate Mint USB to gain access to the data. I put it down to Ventoy not liking the new BIOS I put in, but it seems like a good 'old Bill Gates issue. There is a small unknown problem from time to time. We have had close communication with nvidia. Where DX12 and RTX on, is pretty much borked. Last week, we found around 50% performance loss by using this settings and raytracing. There is also made some videos about the findings, and reported back to Nvidia. This ofc, apply to full blown gaming systems. We ran Ryzen processors and a couple of 4090 cards etc in this testing. We had 25 sample of differfent games, where we could see the same patterns. Best thing you can do right now, is to game on DX11 if you want to maintain performance. Dual boot part I have not been affected my self, using rEFInd bootload with windows and CachyOs.

Others have commented that the GRUB on many of the systems that had trouble *WAS* the very latest with all the patches. It seems that the case that made the Microsoft code fail was if the Linux system was on a different drive. In that case it went and modified all of the GRUBs without asking. Since secure boot only protects your machine if someone gets physical access, for most users it doesn't protect them from much of a real threat.

I don't get the point that Google was trying to make with this Team Pixel crap. Because the phones are good. They're good enough to stand on their own. Actual independent review, again from people like MKBHD and other outlets that are not part of this, show that these things hold their own against the latest from Samsung and Apple. And they're also much better than the 8 Which is really all they needed to be. This had no possibility to do anything other than backfire, and I don't know what executive at Google signed off on it. Also, these phones have started arriving in the hands of early pre-orders, and those are also posting pre-positive stuff on places like Reddit, mostly focusing with the improvements over the eight, which again, is really all these phones needed to be.
@TeH.j0keRАй бұрын
Half the Pixels are garbage though. Carrier locked and bootloader locked if you buy a prepaid one. I bought one falling for their marketing that every Pixel branded phone is supposed to be a developer device, and basically ended up with a phone I could barely do anything with like it was an iPhone or something. I've grown more and more pissed off with the last several Android devices I've bought being like that. Now you *could* tell me "pay more money pay more money and get the correct one that isn't scamming you into thinking you can develop with it," but I'm far more inclined to try avoiding purchasing their products any more after I've been scammed on the last several devices.

The issue is quite complex, but in short: if performance is CPU bottlenecked, and there are no driver/DX translation issues, the virtualization security sandbox that Windows 10/11 uses to isolate games, has a serious performance impact that allows Linux to have better CPU performance.

11:00 That 80% is mainly because X11 support is basically dead in Plasma 6. I had to remove it just to install updates on Fedora 40.

Best sponsor ever👍😉 Question: which specific update (KB no.?) broke the dual boot / GRUB 2? My Linux Mint 21.3 and Windows 10 dual boot system runs fine with the latest Windows updates.

Don't dual boot - run Windows in a VM instead, if you must have it.

Or just use any old laptop you have lying around.

This is why I use separate drives and just swap which OS I what to use via my BIOS/UEFI

Windows updates have messed up grub for ages. Usually they change the MBR pointer so it just boots windows rather than really screwing something up.

I'm glad I have my linux setup on an external SSD.

To be fair, secure boot was always a pain for a lot of reasons.

The only way to dual boot is using two separate drives and selecting from bios

8:00 I updated to 560 a week ago and I cannot play any games no matter what settings I change in Lutris or within the launch settings. Screen flashes black and thats it. I rolled back with TimeShift and it works fine. Going to have to wait a bit.

Hehe, I have cables out and I just swap SSD disks! I got FreeBSD, Mint and Wintendo...

This is why I change configs on UEFI, when dual booting. I thought SB was supposed to protect the user, not to block him. Note: I use Kubuntu and Windows 11, both with different M2 SSDs. Only Linux can see all of them, Windows can only "feel" the other "idle" drive.

Good thing I only go into my windows partition like once a month

So using arch linux and updating everything myself was a solid idea for once? Sweet!

Just one reason I moved Windows either to a VM or to a separate hard drive.

Great Video ... i think better performance on Linux rather than on Windows could be because Proton does not run a whole Windows .. just the things that are needed to play a game. Linux itself does not run so much stuff in the background. That could be the simple reason for this.

this is why i keep them instaled separately on separate ssd. but win is getting less and less usage, basically, gaming platform

Microsoft dual boot works fine if you don't install Windows. 👍 I use Linux for everything. No problems.

Getting secure boot shims/grub signed can take months as the (Canoical) reviewer is quite slow from my experience.

All secure boot does is cause problems. Just turn it off.

6:47 maybe but the threat of cutting off free review units is often enough to say good things about it. The only difference in my eyes between Google and the others is that the former were explicit about it. There's an English saying known as "don't bite the hand the feeds you" meaning you shouldn't be ungrateful to someone who is doing you a favour (is there an equivalent in other languages?) I would also add that a savvy viewer would see that the unit was a freebie for review purposes and see a red flag being raised in effect meaning the reviewer is assumed to be not entirely honest until proven otherwise

So if a dual-boot system has Secure Boot turned off, this MS screw-up will not cause issues?
