That's a job I wouldn't even touch. Old glass is lethal. Fair play for giving it a go. You've given us an idea of what to do....

Bonded glass is a pain in the ass. Usually heat does soften sealent or glue and makes it much easier.

If you wanted to save the screen (it looks pretty delaminated anyway on the top corner) then ideally you should have cheese wired it out. The Kent knife you are using is really for fast removal of already broken screens. There are plenty of windscreen manufacturers/suppliers in Ireland you should be fine with a charade. Remember to get new seals too if you can, they never go back right at this age! HTH

Cheese wire method looks very effective alright. I cracked a couple of the old rubber ones in the past before I got the hang of it. Thanks for the advice.

Why did car companies switch to bonded glass?

It looks to me like it helps with aerodynamics, drag and preventing water ingress.
