I believe it’s because the game is set in historical Mongolian. A lot of East Asian breeds are very short in stature (Japan has many native breeds that have shorter necks.) The horses in this game very closely resemble the Przewalski horse, which are Mongolian and also very primitive looking. I’m very intrigued with this game! It’s a super unique take on the horse game.

Mongolian horses look like this; ironically the western horses are the abnormal ones since Mongol horses are genetically the closest to the ancient wild horses

Their empire literally fought China and in the area that would come to be known as Russia at the same time so who knows where she's from or what her story is. Maybe play the game to find out?
