California is doing a major disservice to the consumer, allowing wineries to add a whopping 25% of another vintage/varietal to a bottle without stating it on the label. Oregon has a more strict limit at 10%. Love the video and his perspective on wine and winemaking.
@FlintIronstag23Ай бұрын
Yes, Oregon has stricter wine varietal rules over the Federal minimums. 90% for most popular varieties like Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. 75% is allowed for 16 specific varities: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Malbec, Marsanne, Merlot, Mourvedre, Petit Verdot, Roussanne, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillion, Syrah, Tannat, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. As for vintage rules, Oregon follows the Federal rules. If it is from a named AVA, then it has to be 95% from that harvest year. If it is not from a specific AVA, then it has to be at least 85% from that harvest year. For origin rules Oregon is also stricter than the Federal minimums. Oregon wines must be from 100% from Oregon grapes if the label says Oregon on it. The Federal rules require only 75%. The exception is cross border AVAs like Columbia Gorge and Walla Walla where 100% of the grapes must be from those two states. Oregon also requires 95% of the grapes be grown in the AVA if the label says it is from a specific AVA. Federal requirements are only 85%.

Fabulous discussion! Refreshingly honest and thought-provoking. Still mulling it over, especially the idea that “buying a bottle of wine is buying memories.” 🤯

Wow amazing video!!! i was in peñin a few weeks ago and can experience myself how some smalls winery's have 0 ppl trying their wines and big companys whit their big wines taking all the interest... and some small winerys make veeery good wine but can't sell it because they don't have the marketing.

Wow! Great talk! I watched half with my morning coffee,I haven't finished it but I had to pop in to say this.. Philosophy is near and dear to my heart,it encompasses much of my mental space.. Not so much the great works of Philosophy, but rather the head space of it.. Constantly trying to wrap my head around the what and why.. He reminded me so much of a typical existentialist journey,from surety of knowledge to it's all a bullshit stroke job.. *so to speak.. I have the that feeling you get when you say something to a group of people and instantly think 'do I sound like a crazy person? Damn,yep,I think I might have just sounded like a crazy person.'

Enjoyed listening to Robert talk! Would like more sit-down talks with wine professionals. Side note: There is a Paso Robles red blend with a bit of Viognier added.
@katgodАй бұрын
That is common especially with Syrah. Pinot often has Syrah added for deeper color as many people don't like light colored wines. In California you only need 75% of the varietal in the bottle to call it that varietal i.e. you could add 20% Viognier to your Syrah and still call it a Syrah.

Is it allowed for the Bordeaux grand cru’s to put other vintages in the bottle then what it says on the label?
@drmatthewhorkeyАй бұрын
15% of other vintages are allowed to be blended in all of Europe

Matthew rating the red blend with 92 points when nobody asked was funny😂 I am listening to thing and one thing I know for sure, I have zero interest trying these cacophony wines. also calling Saperavi wines clumsy… get better palate😅

Don't think Robert is telling you which Saperavi clones he's using? Ask him if Hugh Ryman is consulting there, Matthew?
