Alan Orr talks about the difference between CSL Wing Chun Boxing and Western Boxing. Not from the point of view of which works better. But to point out where they are different.
Alan is a big boxing fan and sees Wing Chun as a style of Boxing.
Some people can't see the Wing Chun used in our MMA fights, so Alan points it out to make it clear.

One of very few who can talk about wing chun, mma and boxing with authority and has real insight. The discussion could be endless but there are some great lessons here.

It's ridiculous that people don't believe alan orr's fighters do WC, he doesn't practice or teach any other striking art. What do people think it is, boxing? If it's supposed to be boxing, then it's bad boxing, if it's supposed to be muay thai then it's bad Muay Thai. Mr. Orr has shown how wing chun can be effective in sport, people can't say a martial art is too deadly as other self defense arts like karate have also adapted, other wing chun people should step it up too if they ever hope to bring respect to their martial art.

I've noticed a lot of similarities between Wing Chun and old English Pugilism. Vertical fists to protect the hands, dropping your body weight into a punch instead of throwing your body weight into it, etc.

@@EYEZAYZEL Umm, James Figg was a champion of boxing around the early 17th century, and learned the crafts of boxing and wrestling from those who were before him. So pugilism actually precedes English contact and trade with China. www.britannica.com/biography/James-Figg

Great explanation of Wing Chun principles applied in the ring against skilled opponents. It's very rare you see traditional defensive positions applied in practice.

Wow, what you said about arcing your punch and folding at the last second to maintain initial Wing Chun positioning is genius! Think I might start using that, looks fun.

Wing Chun is about ideas, every move in Wing Chun is a verb. Fuk Sao, Bong, Pak sao, Gum, Jum, Jut, they are verbs. Yes we learn how to do them by a structured form, but this is so we understand the "idea" and physics behind it. A pak sao can look different and still be a pak. A fuk can be done so many ways it isn't even countable. Usually when someone says "That doesn't look like Wing Chun" they aren't talking about the structure, they are talking about the person is not using any of the ideas, or they are breaking those ideas of Wing Chun. it is hard to explain to people who don't train in Wing Chun.

Also, what you said about covering high and how people claim it to be 'not Wing Chun' because it doesn't use a Wing Chun shape... I personally abandoned the 'what is' and 'what is not' Wing Chun ages ago, but I would argue that covering high is just an elevated Wu Sao. I mean, I know it engages the shoulder, but so does Bong Sao, to an extent. Doesn't really matter, whatever works. Just thought I'd point it out.

Loved your breakdown between boxing and wc Alan. Especially yeah there is hip rotation in most striking art but how the power gets transferred to the hands there are differences. The big thing for me is how things change when you go bare knuckle. Something a lot of armchair analysts seem to overlook, deliberately or otherwise

I like your shit Alan. Good stuff. Here's my take; put Chinese Kung Fu into your actions and use it in fighting. Not make your fighting actions look like Chinese Kung Fu. When Bruce Lee first came out, he wanted to be represent Kung Fu but it looked so different than what most people perceived as Kung Fu back then. Now even if you look at other styles like Baguazhang and Baji, when they use it, they look more like what you are doing, looks like modern kickboxing, MMA, etc but with Chinese Kung Fu 'stuff' under the hood. That's how it should be. Fighting and combat sports have evolved and it looks like you guys have definitely got along with the program. Great video. I hate to pull out the Wong Shun Leung wisdom like most Chunners do but he said: "as long as it is logical, if it works, use it!"

Just curious but your school comes from Hawkins Chuengs lineage yes? via Robert Chu? have you ever trained with Hawkins? and if so what was it like? I really like your approach btw and I love how you've adapted Wing Chun under the restrictions of various fighting comps and actively compete in them, much like Hawkins and Wong Shun Leung did back in the day good stuff

Hell ya good video. Ive only seen a few mma fighters who had superb dirty boxing. But when I do see it i think "Winnnnnnnnng chunnnn". Nate Diaz throws real looper haymakers that pin his opponent down. His dirty boxing is pretty good. Actually... most mma fighters have really horrible dirty boxing. They clench their whole core, telegraph the shot, build zero speed, and have no body behind it. They try arm muscle power punches from clench position. Im often amazed at how much power i can generate from "dirty boxing" zone (mostly through speed and structure) and i pretty much taught myself compared to allllll the damn mma fights i watched. And they got these worthless little taps with zero acceleration.

This guy obviously knows what he is talking about. His lineage of succesful fighters speaks for itself. Two minor things though: boxer dont always rotate their fist, especially with the hook, which perfomed voor with a vertical fist most of the time, but even the jab can be seen executed vertically and with a low elbow. Anyone paying close attention to boxing matches will see this. Second: the head is more or less a round object and the fist therefore will always meet it a more or less straight angle. Therefore the risk of hitting with the fingers instead of the knuckles is just as great with both techniques.
@alanorrwingchunacademy1302
@alanorrwingchunacademy1302 9 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes agree not all boxing punches are the same and rotate. When hotting the head we have our fist vertical and that helps, plus the angle of the head is important when striking
