I met Aaron Neville in 1993 at an airport in Roanoke, Virgina. We had the same flight, and he sat next to me on a 2-hour flight. We had a great chat; he was very gracious and kind. I didn't ask him for an autograph; the conversation we had meant much more than an autograph he could have signed. Plus, I thought it would be crass.

In 1985 my daughter was born, I was 36 at the time. When this song was released in 1990 my daughter was 5 years old. When this video played my daughter would sing it to me and say it was "our song." This song always brings tears to my eyes. My 5 year old daughter, sitting on my lap, looking straight in my eyes and singing along to this song. Lynx is 38 now.

Linda lives here in San Francisco. We have mutual friends. She won’t sing anymore,in public,due to her very sad ailment. However,she still has a beautiful voice when she sings with her family. Though I'm clearly in the minority here, I'll say I've always DISliked voices like Aaron Neville's (and Barry Gibbs', and Johnny Mathis'). I'm not trying to persuade anyone -- JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION. Now, thanks to Fil, I finally know what the quality I dislike is called: "tremolo." (I've heard the term before but didn't understand what it meant. I always learn from Fil!) Those tiny intervals of breath instead of note sound to me like something is missing, kinda like a radio voice when the station isn't properly tuned in. Glad I watched this, if only for that reason. I fully appreciate the beauty and control of Ronstadt, AND her generosity to other singers with whom she performed.

They won a Grammy Award in 1990 for this song and in 1991 for “All My Life”. Their voices match perfectly. His voice is so unique and has been around for sixty years. “Tell It Like It Is” as a young man with the Neville Brothers. Aaron and Linda sang an album together in “Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind” where these songs appear. Just magical ❤

One thing to note with Aaron is that he's baritone who sings high in his head voice and in his falsetto. As a tenor, if I want to cover him, I actually have to take the tune up about a fourth so I can slip in and out of my head and falsetto. It took me a minute to figure that out. I'm friends with his sons, Ivan and Jason and they both have lower voices.

I saw the Neville brothers in a small concert venue, The Coach House, San Juan, California. My date bailed, but heck no way was I going to miss them performing. Their voices filled every nook and cranny in the room. During their break, they came to the bar,, said they saw me sitting by myself, bought me a brink. Giving births to my 3 kids, and spending a few minutes with the Neville bros.,, life well lived! I'm truly blessed. We all are blessed to hear those voices.

Thanks, Fil, for doing another piece involving Linda - she could harmonize with anyone (and did) and she genuinely enjoyed singing with others more than she did solo. She could slot that magnificent voice into whatever part would best compliment the other singer. She has also said that Aaron has “the voice of an angel” - who WOULDN’T want to sing with that 😍
@stephaniesullivan8989
@stephaniesullivan8989 Жыл бұрын
Her “Trio” albums come to mind. I read her autobiography, she writes several times about the joys of having singers over and just sitting on the floor and harmonizing with them. It was very definitely an earliest memory of hers to have extended family members harmonizing together at the end of the day. Touching on their relationship with each other, it is delightfully shown to have been strictly professional. Upon winning the Grammy, a very nervous Mr Neville said he wanted to thank Linda first, then apparently his mind went blank, and Linda whispered something in his ear, he continued by saying “…and my wife Joel”. Absolutely adorable.

After they finished recording this song in the studio, Aaron said to Linda "See you at the Grammys." He was right and it was well-deserved. Also, in terms of their relationship---they respected each other as musicians and people, and had spent time rehearsing this song before they recorded it. When Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper sang "Shallow" at the Grammy ceremony, some people were saying "Oh, they must be in love." When asked about this, Lady Gaga said "It's called 'acting'." Same here---all of these people are professionals and they know how to put across a great performance.

This analysis was fascinating, especially how they conform to each other stylistically. My son and daughter are both singers and while they have very different tones, they can match vibrato in their duets, since they have grown up hearing each others vocal styles. They sort of become one entity (as an aside, music is the only time these siblings can function as one entity…)

The talent, the music may have been one of the last great Grammy Shows ever broadcast. This VHS tape still plays and sounds just like I just recorded it, love me some VHS linear stereo tracks. A few years later, at some award ceremony, they did this duet on stage again, and she had to remind him to thank his wife, and did not kiss him! So, it would appear that he got married in the interim. But Fil, another great video, and ANYTIME you have Linda on, I will be here! I have an outstanding home theater, which is basically a sound system (7.2), and when I put Linda on (usually a CD) and have a visitor, they cannot believe what they are hearing.Some have commented on how listening to Linda was sending chills up their back.

I thought they had broken up by this point and the chemistry was due to their history, but it's hard to say because different sources give different dates. Most are saying they dated from 1989 to 1992, so probably still together here.

Oh yes! I am so with you! Both these singing stars are just perfect together and both are indeed so perfected on their...and when the ever get together...that respect, the easy awareness of each other's 'senses' is just marvelous! Whooh! It's like heaven put them together!

Very impressed you let it play. So many radio dj's cut off the ending that is the best. End of Onion song, Toto's Rosanna, fantastic guitar solo. I get annoyed when they talk over the end. I was waiting for you to cut it off. Impressed you had the sensitivity to react. The end of this song is exquisite.

Fil, my husband was with Mitch Ryder of the Detroit Wheels. He was his lead guitarist for almost 20 years. Sadly he died last year. I've had to sell all of his guitars and most of his amps. I still have 4 vintage Fender amps to sell. The primo one is a 1959 tweed twin. I also have a 1961 Concert that Bo Diddley borrowed and signed the back in 81. We usef to watch you together. He thought you were awesome and so do I. He used to tell me I had the ears of a dog. Like you I can here everthing. I can't sing or play like you but not many can. I loved this video.

I noticed you were smiling and really engaged in Aaron and Linda’s duet. Thanks for a wonderful analysis of their performance. This was truly a song that was tailor made for them. I appreciated how you explained their techniques and the uniqueness of their voices. No wonder the song won a Grammy. Strangely, when the song came out, I was doing my music therapy internship. My supervisor and I were listening to “Don’t Know Much” on the radio. My supervisor remarked, “Show-offs(referring to Aaron and Linda), that they can sing with vibrato!” I thought, “But if it blends well, what’s wrong with singing with vibrato?” I also wanted to mention that the song won a Grammy and when was the last time that she won a Grammy but my supervisor was very hard on me; hence I kept my mouth shut. Anyway, thanks again for your incredible analysis, Fil!

I think this is one of the best analyses you have done Fil! Much like this performance, there is just so much in there with your analysis. This is a great performance of a beautiful, emotional song. The explanation and demonstration of Aaron Neville's voice and what makes it so distinctive was really enlightening. Showing how these two pros blend their voices so well also gives you a new appreciation for this overlooked skill. Plus the demonstration of what it would sound like if they didn't was pretty cool too. And then the guitar demo was the cherry on top! Thanks so much for this Fil, well done!

Man, you hit your breakdown on the head! I said "Mutual Respect" at the exact same time you did! I believe Ms Ronstadt sought out Mr. Neville, to feature him on her current album, at that time. He is unbelievable and she is just EVERYTHING! This is how you duet. Brought tears to my eyes, it is so beautiful.
