@mthivier2 жыл бұрын
For me, that talking-singing technique comes from a storytelling place. (It's interesting that you referenced Sinatra, as I've always considered him to be a musical storyteller too). It's like Dolly inhabits the character in the song for those three minutes, and uses whatever tools she needs to tell that person's story. (Sometimes -- as in the case of a song like "Me and Little Andy" --- she actually creates a specific voice that the character might have.). Here the song represents a conversation between the narrator and Jolene, and she's thus performing it in a conversational style, and it seems -- to me at least -- almost like she does this without even thinking about it. I really enjoyed your analysis, Fil.

I've always thought Dolly's singing is the way it is because she sings songs she's written herself based on her life. She's a gifted storyteller both when being interviewed or in the songs she writes so she often has passages when she "talks" rather than sings. She has a very unique voice, easy to listen to. On a side note.....why would a man give any other woman a second look if he's married to Dolly? Beauty, brains, kind and generous...yet Jolene got his full attention.
@maryannanderson22132 жыл бұрын
Did Jolene get his attention? All I have ever heard Dolly say was that Jolene was giving HIM attention but I never heard her say that he gave Jolene HIS attention. I would love to be pointed to the interview or introduction to this song where Dolly hints that Carl was at all interested in Jolene. She jokingly said she "went home and beat the hell out of him" but I took that just as Dolly being Dolly and do not believe for a minute that she actually laid a hand on him. I think she is secure enough in his love for her that she is not afraid of the occasional woman who might give him the roving eye. Am I wrong?

You need to understand that songwriting isn't the criteria for greatness. For every million songwriters, there's but ONE Ella Fitzgerald. ONE presley. ONE Sinatra. ONE Ray charles, etc..... These artists literally interpreted the words of another writer, and turned them into critically acclaimed masterpieces in the recording studio. That's why for every million songwriters, there's but ONE of these iconic ARTISTS. Elton John explained, that the most difficult thing in music is to interpret the words of another writer, into critically acclaimed masterpieces. The artists I just mentioned, did that on numerous occasions. That's truly remarkable.

Keith richards said that there's a reason why no one has interpreted the Rolling Stones classics and improved upon them. He said the same thing about elvis, Ella, Ray, frank, etc.... Take a listen to pure perfection. Frank on "fly me to the moon" Ray charles on " America the beautiful". Elvis on "Heartbreak hotel" 1956. Ella Fitzgerald on "love for sale", etc....etc...... The list of essential masterpiece recordings for these artists is ENDLESS. TIMELESS....... IF anyone is having trouble grasping this reality, it literally speaks volumes about your lack of intelligence and critical thinking.

If you want to see a HUGE difference in a singer's talking voice and his singing voice, you should check out Jim Nabors (Gomer Pile). His speaking voice is a high-pitched, sort of dorky voice and then when he sings it's so low and so deep that it's as though it's the voice of a totally different person. I'm trying to think of a country artist with a great difference between a singing and talking voice and right off the bat, I can't think of any. Maybe that's why I like country music so much. Most of the time the singer is absolutely singing with his talking voice. They're usually telling a story so that makes total sense to me.

Thanks so much! You should be teaching this in workshops to aspiring pop singers so they learn what it means to sing naturally AND perfectly.

2 things: One time Dolly was asked in an interview if she felt bad that most people think I Will Always Love You is Whitney's song and not hers, she replied, "Are you kidding? Do you know how much money that woman's made me?" lol Miley Cyrus is her goddaughter and was on The Voice (?) and made some offhand, nasty comment about Jolene on one episode, the very next episode Miley was up singing Jolene, you just know Dolly was involved in that.

Yes! I did enjoy this analysis. 🌟 Dolly Parton 🌟 She is such a lovable human being. Top-notch! 'Coat of Many Colors' is one of my favourite songs. Thank you, Fil 🖤🕊️

I could be wrong but the song Jolene reminds me of an early English song sung in D minor. If you listen to old southern mountain songs they seem to have that vide.🤠

Fil, these analysis videos enhance our appreciation as listeners as we learn of the complexities that we may have previously overlooked. My suggestion for another such video would be Judy Henske's song, 'Buckeye Jim' off her 1964 album, "High Flyin' Bird." It is not only notable for Henske's dynamic emotionally ladened vibrato, but also for the 12 string guitar that accompanies her with three distinct voicings that dovetail her emotion while building to a crescendo before gradually leading us back to where we first began the journey. I would love to hear your take on this performance.

I think Dolly is one of the most gracious entertainers - ever. I have never heard her speak ill of anyone. When she was on an awards show (or something) with her 9 to 5 co-stars, they tried to “pull her in” to the political conversation. I guess she made it clear afterwards - she didn’t want any part of that and wasn’t happy they tried to get her involved. She is extremely intelligent and I have no doubt she has her opinions. I appreciate that she is just trying to bring pleasure and enjoyment to her fans. Classy lady.

Your videos are so interesting because you can understand and break down the complexities in the songs we all love. But I would have to say my favorite part is when you spontaneously smile with pleasure as you're listening. Love it!

Brilliant! Dolly is my superhero! This was especially interesting as I've pitch-monitored myself singing 'Jolene'. That vocal line looked nothing like this...😂 There's so much rise and fall even in her speaking voice, I don't think I'd be able to do even that.
