Thank you for taking the time to discuss the Rollers and showing them some respect as musicians. I appreciate you not just taking the easy/popular road of talking crap about their musicianship and singing abilities. And yes, I was part of the American branch of Tartan Terrors way back in the 1970’s. It was the best of times!

OMG, I am 56 years old and was a Rollermaniac back in the 70's . I had posters of Les up on my wall, he was my teenage crush along with David Cassidy. My best friend had a crush on Eric. I still have all of my Roller vinyl albums but I wish I still had the jean jacket that I sewed tartan strips of fabric on to.The last album I purchased was "I'ts a Game" . I got to see them in concert at the Westbury Music Fair theater in NY, I'm pretty sure they were lipsyncing to a recording like a lot of their televised gigs. The performance clip used in this video is definitely live, they sound great live. It's tragic how that Tom Patton stole of all the money they earned, I closely followed their lawsuit against Arista Records and sadly the Rollers lost in court

I just want to scream every time I read/hear they didn't play their own music. I saw them in '77; they absolutely played their own music and they were bloody great! Find their live album from Budokan, they're bloody playing and their sound is really good.

They were managed by idiots who didn't want to spend the money on the extra studio time it would have taken to teach them how to play what was required in the studio and ended up ruining their reputation as musicians as a consequence. They were in fact experienced musicians who had little trouble playing the songs live.

I met the Bay City Rollers at a baggage area in Heathrow coming back from Ireland with my mum and brothers. I was about 10 and recognised the drummer first - Mum got their autographs for us, strange thing is it was at the height of their fame and no-one was around. Roll on 40 odd years and I saw Les in a Legends concert, got to say he was very entertaining and could still hold a tune.

Thanks for your great and detailed analysis of the Bay City Rollers' live performance. I truly appreciated your demonstration with the MIDI keyboard and guitar, especially in the adapting guitar strums for improved sound in a live performance. Yes, the piano section(in the original recording)was both integral and missing. Fil, your analyses never bore me because you remind me of what I've learned as a musician, teach me new things, and sometimes affirm things that I hear and/or notice(e.g. song's key). Thanks for what you do.

Definitely a phenomenon in the 70s. Thank you for breaking it down like that. I think those fellas were given the short end of the stick in every way they could get it. Delving into that would be a whole other video. I am happy that Eric is still playing and writing his own music as well as Woody. I took a peak online to see what they were up to one day and, being a songwriter, I really felt for those two, in particular, wanting to be freer to create, but you know the recording industry sees it as a product more than art. Thanks for this! Great video. Very thorough teaching here. I learned things. :-)

So, I live in the town this band is named for. I was a wee teen at the time but remember all the hoopla. Our town was big into painted murals on buildings then and the BCR had a big one as you might imagine! I fancied myself a little “too cool” at the time and was more into rock then pop, but I wish I had given them a little more notice. I will tell you this-there were a LOT of young girls walking around my city in doctored up pants with plaid around their hems:) I so enjoyed this analysis-thank you!

The tartan gear was MADE available as a fashion in the clothes industry in the middle 70s. You didn,t have to make it. The clothes were on sale across the world for the youngsters. Made for the kids, who were the youngsters ,who were the fans at the time. I remember this. Not sure where folk got the idea that during the days when Les was in them in the middle 70s, that the fans had to make the tartan clothes. They maybe had to, for any Roller line up band after they dropped the tartan in 77, and the clothes industry had ceased making the outfits. That may be the case then, I can,t say for defo, about that. But when Les was in the band in the middle 70s, they were a global phenomenon. Absolutely HUGE. They had merchandise and clothes on the band everywhere. The tartan shirts, trousers, jackets, stripey socks, tartan tammies, etc. were actually in the shops, as a fashion to buy, which the parents were buying for even young toddlers. Yes, the kids could even wear it, as the parents were doing the buying of it all.

Thank you, as always, Fil. The Bay City Rollers were a band that appealed only to the girls in my part of the world, due largely to their odd choices in stage costumes. The girls in school would be wearing tartan and gushing over the band and their favourites members. In contrast, the guys all looked at them and laughed, not really giving the music a chance. It wasn't until years later, while I was running a Facebook group voting on favourite songs of the 1970's, that I really heard the band for what they were. I was honestly impressed at a lot of their songs, far better than what I'd given them credit for way back when. I loved your commentary on playing in an outdoor setting. My band found the same thing and it was only through careful mixing on our soundboard that we could fill the sound out enough. The best outdoor shows we've performed are the ones where the venue has provided an experienced sound engineer who knew how to bring the best from the groups on the stage.

It’s easy to forget that this was before social media and even MTV so bands back then had to play live quite a bit in order to promote the sale of their albums. So how ever one feels about their music their success required a lot of work and some degree of skill in performing live. Not to mention attending live appearances and promotional events when they weren’t performing. Nice job by Fil of breaking down the intricacies of the rhythm sections of the song.

They were named for a town for Bay City Michigan, a town just east of where i grew up. I remember driving to Bay City with my family and just as you crossed the Saginaw river you could see a mural of these guys painted on the side of one of the buildings.

Hi Fil! LOVED Bay City Rollers! It was when I saw my young daughter (she was 9) respond to the same kind of music I listened to when I was young! I Only Want to be With You was a Dusty Springfield song, and they had the flavor of the 60s when they performed....I remember having to go out, and buy the plaid material like all the girls held at the concerts...it was a fun time for both of us! I really enjoyed this group no matter what they sang! My daughter went on to get her degree as a Music Therapist, and I like to think I had something to do with her early love of music...had records on the stereo all day long! I encouraged her love of all music even if some wasn’t my cup of tea! Thanks Fil for these guys...they made me smile tonight! Fun memories! ✌️

BRAVO!! You sound like a very cool, ROCKING Mom!! 👍💕💕 Music is my therapy, and definitely helped me through the stress of taking care of my Mom. She would usually go to sleep at night listening to her "Celtic Christmas" CD by Kim Robertson, who plays the Celtic harp. It didn't matter that it was long past Christmas, that music helped my Mom to relax and go to sleep more than anything else. She never tired of it. She has gone on now, but I think of my Mom singing in heaven's choir, and I can just imagine how happy and wonderful the music up there must be. Music is a gift to mortals from The Divine. ❤

Robin Cortez How sweet to write me! Music has always been my therapy too! My daughter jokes that when she was in college her friends were amazed at her knowledge of the sixties music...she knew all the words! I hope I was a cool mom..I remember taking her to see Donny Osmond, and The Osmond Brothers..I also went to see The DeFranco Family..I felt it was important to have lots of music around. Your mom is an example of how Music Therapy can help! I do remember my daughter had a part time job in high school at a nursing home, and she talked about a patient who couldn’t speak, and one night started singing when the national anthem came on...that had a huge influence on her! She wanted to use music to help! Again..thanks!

The Mighty 'V' I am glad I helped you remember Dusty’s song! That music was so important to me! I was able to share my music with her through this band! Another time we bonded was when she was a young adult, and we discovered we both loved Peter Paul, and Mary! Went to a concert together!

I never heard this song! It was such an easy groove to love, I was just happy every time that chorus came around, and was still hearing it in my head almost all the way through your explanation (which I was paying attention, to, of course, just that you had a backing track)! They sure were bouncy!

Bingewatching tonight your channel tonight. Thank you for being entertained and distacted. Nice old memories: Bay City Rollers 😁🙂 .They were really huge all over the world! I saw them in 1978, in Eulachhalle Winterthur, Zurich/Switzerland ... My first big concert ever. Hunderts of girls screaming, fainting ... they had to stop the concert for about 20 minuts. 10 years later, I saw The Cure in the same place ... quite different sound and style, and ambiente ☺.

I was 11-12 years old in '75/'76. These guys were HUGE for like 3 years in the U.S. '75-'77. The teen idol thing was huge then. Davey Jones, David Cassidy & Donny Osmond set the stage for that era..also the era where the BRAND was sometimes bigger than the band. Pushed heavily but the promoters & record companies..

Bill Murray tells an hilarious story of the band appearing on a LIVE tv show in 1975. The Rollers played Saturday Night near the end of the show. After finishing, the producer said that the show was running short and asked them to play a second song. Unfortunately, the band were lipsincing and had no amps, speakers or set up for any other song. A few minutes later, at the end of the show, the band played Saturday Night again. I guess they hoped no one would notice.

As Syd and Marty croft said, they really wanted the Beatles, they weren't going to get them, they split.but that's Americans, think they are better then anyone,it's their voices, yes it sounds hollow in finlandwhere this is done, Erics school band witness did very well in London backing up Slade, then in Manchester b c r show they were there, and pilot, who is mentioned in Eric's song playing in a rock and roll band,a band with a thousand names, they went on to be called pilot.this guys playing sounds sad,so what's he on about.

Growing up at the other end of the earth in New Zealand, I remember BCR had a LOT of fans there. Mostly teen and pre-teen girls of course. Being a guy into rock, I didn't much care for them. Their crimes against fashion were undeniably cringeworthy as well. They had a good rhythm section in Derek and Alan though, and Les could sing and get the fans going. Great analysis as always Fil.

Wings of Pegasus(Phil).. it's good to see something reviewed (as you do) without pretense, or ironic detachment...Wasnt there a late 60s/70s TV use of pre recorded backing & 'live' vocal mic(e.g. New York Dolls on OGWT ,Rolling Stones 'Brown Sugar')... I have seen footage of B C Rollers where the 'Beatles at Hollywood bowl level Screaming' making 'is it live? Overdubbed ? difficult to tell .... so this footage & explanations of its sound is a real pleasure..Thanks

I must say I've never seen this video before, but I'm a very old BCR fan & seen, heard & listen to them for decades. I thought they did quite well & mind I did see a number of concerts, not that you could hear very much during them!😊🤣 They did do they're own music and you just can't argue with that, I did see behind the scenes and they were pretty good. I was always a Les Babe & I met his wife and son and I thought they were a lovely family for him to have & so it proved. They all kept playing, none of them ever stopped performing, which you have to respect. I will always be a BCR girl and I will love Les till I die. I miss them all so much because it changed my life and actually made me really love music even more than I did in the first place. Thanks Boys❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ never gone or forgotten 💖💖💖💖😘🥰💋
