Jeff Lynn is the only one who could sing Roy Orbison's parts. Anyone would else would have made it a caricature, Jeff made it an homage. The whole Wilburys project was such a case of lightning crashes. So many greats, not showing off, not one upping each other, but just coming together and showing themselves as a bunch of guys doing what they love. OMG I had no idea about The Life of Brian! And unlike most supergroups, there was no drama here. No egos, no one thinking they were the best. There was nothing but love and respect all around. I love Roy Orbison's rendition, but I get chills when Jeff Lynne sings it too. Both great singers, each in his own unique way. Traveling Wilburys had so many superstars it would have been impossible to pay them enough if they hadn't been doing it for friendship and for the love of music. Perfectly lovely analysis and great encapsulation of the whole complex story. One sweet little fact: when Dhani was growing up at Friar Park, George was massively involved with landscaping the grounds. So, when Dhani was asked about his father as a musician, he said that he didn't really know he WAS a musician, he always thought he was a gardener. Thank you so much for this one!

Nice to see a music reviewer get the Wilbury’s history correct, Fil. One of the reasons for the concert’s excellent audio (it’s fully available on CD and DVD) is Jeff Lynne’s production. He spent months with engineers perfecting it. Good job, Jeff.

The day that George was stabbed, he had a new employee that showed up for his first day for work. Since it had happened very early in the morning, George was on a stretcher being put into the ambulance to go to the hospital. He gestured to the new employee and asked him how he liked working for him. Another great George story was told by Ringo. The last time Ringo saw George, he was in Switzerland dying of cancer. Ringo said he had to leave to go to Boston since his daughter was being operated for a brain tumour. George asked Ringo if he wanted George to go along. Ringo cried. That was the kind of friendship they had.

That song came on the radio, in 1988, as I was driving the highway, in the rain, at night -- after having been devastated in a brutal event -- towards a job interview the next day, in a town somewhere where I was supposed to pretend that I was on top of the world. Emotionally, my guts were hanging out over the steering wheel and I was a ghost driving emptily towards a future I wanted no part of. The song was like a balm -- soothing and healing -- it made me cry and laugh at the same time. That night, a handful of superstars touched a regular Joe in exactly the way needed. I'll always be grateful for that song, in that moment, and for their dedication to make what is really just magical music.

@@alanna8983 I actually attended the concert and it was so emotional. First half Indian music then Western musicians. The programme was purple (George's favourite colour) and the standard of musicianship was incredible. So many guitarists and even two drummers on stage yet it seemed note perfect. Isn't it a Pity was probably my favourite track of the night. I bought the DVD too, must play that again soon through decent hifi speakers.

Have you ever seen the clip of Jeff and Tom talking about George's reaction to having Dylan and Roy Orbison in his studio? They talked about how George was overawed--he said, "Look! That's Bob Dylan! That's Roy Orbison! They're here! In my place!" Tom and Jeff didn't say in so many words that they thought it was cute, but that's what they meant, and all they were thinking was, "Yeah, but YOU were a Beatle!" Being star-struck hits everybody, I guess. Another interesting story is that Olivia Harrison was standing in the wings during the Concert for George and, when she saw Dhani out there playing, she said, "Oh, my God! it looks like George stayed young and everybody else got old!" For those of us who were young when George was, too, it was eerie seeing Dhani with the same expressions and mannerisms of George up there, although he doesn't look quite so much like him now, having grown into his own personhood by now.

Big wilbury fan here. Also a big fan of this concert event. Somehow I ended up beijg a crazy Ray Cooper fan as well. I learned early on that if Jeff Lynn is involved in a project, I'm going to enjoy it. Saw ELO in kansas city in the late 70s and that did it for me. I also saw queen at the same venue around the same time. Epic productions that cost around 15 to 20 dollars for great seats right up front. Jeff really Channels Roy on this performance!

Not a comment directly related to the video, but when Tom Petty's Wildflowers was set to release, a local radio station in my area ran a contest to be the first caller anytime they played a Tom Petty song and you would win a Wildflowers CD before it went on sale. I never had any luck calling in fast enough until they played "Handle With Care." The DJ forgot that Tom Petty was in the Traveling Wilburys and nobody else called in either... I stopped by the station later that day and picked up my free CD, haha. Such a gifted group of songwriters and performers. Thanks for the amazing backstory, as always. Cheers!

Talking about his residence, Crackerbox Palace, his video for the song Crackerbox Palace is actually filmed on the grounds. I’ve said before that you should cover some of the performances from The Concert for Bangladesh. So many great musicians participated in what was essentially the first benefit concert. At least on such a massive scale.

That whole Concert For George DVD set is great. I especially like when Clapton and McCartney did "Something", and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" wasn't bad either. I thought that an unsung hero of the concert was the rock solid Marc Mann, who played all of Clapton's original fills on "Gtr. G. Weeps" among other things. Then there was Petty's "Taxman", and Ravi Shankar's daughter on sitar. And then all of the interviews, and Monty Python. I don't remember if it was from an interview from this, or maybe the Scorsese movie Living In The Material World, but Michael Palin tells the story of when being carried out of his house on a stretcher after being stabbed, the paramedic carrying George said it was his first night working. George said "How do you like your job so far ?"

As we all know, Olivia actually succeeded in pulling the assailant off George - effectively saving his life. Apparently, on hearing this, Tom Petty sent a message to George: "Aren't you glad you married a Mexican girl?!"

I believe he asked the question of two new gardeners who had just started work on their first day - he beckoned them over to the gurney as he was being stretchered out. Either way, it's a lovely story.

The concert for George was just the best tribute... monty python to the beatles to ravi shankar. Everything and everyone george adored.

Thank you for all the stories. I love hearing how musical things come about. George was very big in putting up his enormous multi million house as collateral for Python. Shows the faith he had in their talent. Also, thats a hell of a sign of the friendship between them. One thing I noticed about the Concert for George was that all the songs that were covered were done exactly the way George played them, note for note. It was amazing and a sign of the huge respect all those super musicians had for George that it didnt turn into a showcase for everybody's renditions.

Right on, Fil. Love your focus on the music and the love of music, highlighting the passion and intent. Business always will raise it's at-times ugly head but it's great to give a shout out to artists who could stick to the profit motive and choose instead to follow their heart and make the music they want.
