Factory reset your Wink Relay before proceeding with the rooting / installation steps (see the section immediately below)
How to Factory Reset
You may have to install an old version of Assistive Touch - the Wink Relay is running an old version of Android, so newer versions might not work.
Many people have chosen to use Firefox instead of Chrome (again, you may have to use an older version of the software)
Some users have noted that the KingRoot website is no longer available, but you can install KingRoot directly from APK Pure

Google Play Store and the notes below, lots of helpful information as well as TIPS ** Click "SHOW MORE"
This video shows you step by step how to change the Wink relay wall controller from WINK only to any Google / Android desktop. This will also allow you to go between the two and customize the screens to your own liking. The default Wink application can be slow and lacks the ability to really tailor the screen to ones personal taste. Please comment if you have any questions or like the video?
Wink has discontinued sale the Wink Relay a while go, but still supports it if you pay $5 going forward.
Applications I suggest using
Google Play Service (Needed to load some apps)
Google Now Launcher or Total Launcher or Nova (your choice)
Multi Home Button
Application Assistant
APKpure (APK download site) - Look for an older version if it does not load the latest as the Wink Relay's OS is dated, so keep that in mind if a newer version does not load.
A working root program from APKpure "KingRoot"
Any weather App of your choice
Any News App of your choice
For Hubitat load the following to use the buttons and as sensor just link the original WINK RELAY

Later check this out for getting the Google Play Store working if you need it. ***** • Wink Relay Hack - Root...
You can also default the display to stay on all the time if you do not like the sensor or tap to display feature. I will post another video on how to do that shortly, if not just comment for it. You can also load some themes like Star Trek LCARS on top of Total Launcher if you like but will take time to customize for home automation. To add your apps to Total Launcher just press and hold an empty part of the screen and the edit menu will come up. You can add or move around anything on the screen. This is the selling point of Total Launcher as Google Now is more limited but easier to configure.
If you need to factory reset your WINK, this can be done by rebooting, then by placing your finger over the top sensor while holding down the top relay button. In the menu select factory reset image and you are all set (wipe and factory restore).
To get GPS to work load the following (credit to Jay Miller)
Google Play Services (version 9.4.52)
Google Now Launcher (version 1.3 large)
Google (version 7.18.50.16arm)
I tried to get as much detail as possible but it's not easy to condense this into 10 minutes without having a really long and boring video.

Great video! I am able to get A bunch of these wink relays for cheap. Is this hack still relevant today August 30, 2021? Supposedly there is a $5/month fee from wink. Do I need to pay this fee if I am using your hack?

Still works, the Android OS on the WINK is getting dated (version 5), but it is what it is. When downloading the APK's just use the older versions and not the very latest.

Excellent job! Inspired me to take the plunge after picking up an open box Wink Relay at HD last week for $56. I particularly liked the idea of using a computer power cord (dozens of those lying around!!!) and "mounting" the WR in a box (USPS Priority Mail Small Box is PERFECT for this. I can't even imagine the agony of setting up a WR that is already mounted in a wall. After installing the "Assistive Touch for Android (Assistive Touch Team)" and "Total Launcher", it is very important to reboot the device BEFORE logging into the Wink Relay (and maybe the Wink) app(s). The update that is forced into the Relay after logging in the first time will uninstall ALL browsers, successfully disable the above modifications if the WR has not already rebooted, and otherwise create havoc with this procedure. This happened to me the first time, but thank goodness both a factory reset and image restore got me back to step 1. Not sure if both were required, but it worked. No luck in getting "OK Google" to work yet, however. Still looking for the GPS version number that works with Android Jelly Bean 4.3. Once the Wink features are up and running satisfactorily, it may be desirable to take advantage of the individual app permission modification feature "app ops" of Android 4.3 and disable Wink Upgrade appropriately. Still figuring out which app (hopefully free) can accomplish this task.

The last task in the video which is step 5 is to reboot and then login because it will do just what you said, I am working on a followup video right now with some tips and tricks, I will add that. Google Play Services works and is needed to load apps like Amazon Music but the Google Play store will not work unless you "KingRoot" the device. I would only suggest that for folks who are not going to be using WINK and use it for Smartthings and or other services that require you to stay logged in all the time. There is a modified WINK Relay APK that works too after rooting, but rooting the device carries risk in bricking it if you make a mistake or something goes south. You can fixed a bricked device but need a serial cable to connect to it to restore the Edison.zip file. The factory reset works well and will take you back to the start but I don't suggest doing too often as I have read some folks bricking it too with flashing it too many times. If you want to stop WINK from turning the screen off you can force the app to stop running and if you do a few times it will totally stop from reloading up. This is useful if you want to keep the screen alive all the time but most don't. I will post the video late tomorrow with more tips and tricks that I have come across. The wall controller / relay is great for $50 and gets the job done but has limitations as many have noted. Thanks!

Just performed a factory reset / wipe on my Wink Relay a couple of days ago. This still works. One caveat - when I did this four months ago (and again two days ago), I force-stopped the WinkUpgrade v1.1 app AFTER the major update that is applied when you login to the Wink Relay app for the first time. That major update gets you to software (firmware) version 1.0.602. With this software version, you can still customize your launcher and third-party passwords are not erased every hour. Any additional updates to the Wink Relay firmware will likely hose your edison.zip file and the ability to keep this thing running and perhaps be able to reset it. I was still able to install and run the latest wink - smart home app v. 6.9.0.70. From here on out, I just make sure and avoid the "Software Update" that is offered when viewing the Wink Relay from inside the Wink app, or when the Wink Relay app is opened. it wants to perform another update after the first one - that second one causes the logging out of third-party apps every hour or so and other draconian behavior. This is relevant to those who want to keep the Wink integration.

Quick question please. I have Wink and the Ring. My Wink is used to control my Schlage Connect wireless door lock. I can access my Ring app with my Wink app however it goes to the Play Store page for the Ring and forces me to open it there. I have a Samsung Galaxy S10. Though on my old Samsung Tab A it works perfectly. Wink support hasn't gotten back to me about this issue.

Could you please tell me if this hack would allow me to use my wink relays if i switch to the Samsung Smart Things Hub. I am wanting to move to smart things to allow for Konnect alarm systems to be activated and it is only available on Smart Things and not Wink.I am very happy with Wink, but would very much like to add the Konnect Alarm system so sadly dont have a choice unless i dont go ahead with Konnect. But because i have a Wink hub and wink relays i was hoping to still use the wink relays with the smart things as i dont want to have to give the relays up. Hopefully you can help or shed light on this matter, i must warn you i am not very tech savoy, just enough to get by.

You would be able to use it as any android phone / tablet. Basically under the hood is exactly that. The relay buttons on the right require some special programming so don't expect those to work as they do on WINK.

Great video . I did run into some issue though . Not sure this happened to you or no but I was having trouble launching some apps such as Vesync , Amazon music then I realized that google play service and google Play store needs to be installed in-order for the other apps to work .

Try Nova Launcher on it . You may like it . I am using it on mine . When I have time I will make a video as well and share about my Automation home set up . Do you have any idea about "ImperiIhome" types of app that is free and don't have to subscribe ?

Nova is another good one. I looked up "Imperlihome" but key will be for me with any of the all in one is how well it works with my (eco system) WINK Hub, Alexia and security setup. I will also try to do an updated video with what it looks like after customization in the end. Also I think you only need Google Play Service for loading some apps and getting the Play store to actaully work takes some work and patience.

Will the wink relay accept voice commands to operate smart plugs without Alexa. Can the smart switches be used to operate plugin modules.

The Wink does not do voice natively but does fully support Alexa and Google. I use it with the cheap echo's in each room and it works just fine for controlling WINK modules. You can use WINK to control zwave plugin models for lamps and similar items. You buy the WINK Hub and pair it will Echo as well, you can also go the Smartthings route too. Let me know if you need more help, willing to guide you?

@@TechFan Thanks. I managed to get Google Now Launcher and Google Play Services to install. I still have not figured out how to keep the notification panel available. When the Relay is restarted, it is there but then the Relay software login comes on screen. I go back to home (which I have set as Google Now Launcher) and the wallpaper is not there, the notification panel is not there and the screen never goes to sleep. I have uninstalled the Wink Relay app within the launcher but apparently the thing still tries to be the boss of the device. Is there a way to remove it from the Relay completely? I am not physically connecting anything to the 2 switches so I don't need it added to my Wink and prefer to access Wink with the Wink app versus the Relay software.

Are you using the relay buttons too? If not it's simple to stop the sensor if so it's tricky to get it to stay on as the methods are different.

@@junw3199 that's the one place where you can't change the behavior if you are using the relay buttons. In order to stop the process that keeps track of the display you have to move over to the android version of WINK but that version does not support the relay buttons natively. Not to say it can't be done with a workaround because you can but it's way too much work.

I think the Android OS on the WINK relay is becoming too far outdated for the current apps. I am sad to say it's useful life is turning a corner for the worse. I also hear that trying to root has become more difficult due to the newer root tools not having support for that version of OS.

I have a new Relay in the box but never used it and was wondering if this will make it useful. So do I install via Wink then follow the video.... or are there newer steps and apps. You do not need to add it to wink, factory fresh is best. Just follow the video, the steps take you from Wink to not Wink, you just need to start when it's time to get to the internal browser. If you need more help I can find the exact time of the video but you should be able to see it.

Tech Fan Hi, I started to do this but I failed at the first hurdle. The downloading of the apk’s, it just does not do anything and says the downloads are unsuccessful. As I mentioned, this is the first time I have powered this up since I bought it 2 years ago (long story) so I have not done anything to it. It did allow me to set up the developer (7 clicks on about) and also install from other sources but I am stuck there as I have no home or back key I have to keep powering down....any clues/tips?

Yes it should be able to, you just have to load any app that controls this function. It's basically an android table on the wall. Only issue is that it's an older version of Android so you need to sometimes use older version of the APP from APK repository.

Make sure you are connected your wireless network, if all else fails you can always factory reset it and start over, make sure not to upgrade it first.

It seems to me that wink or someone has managed to get in and ixnay this process. I have tried to watch this and follow along pausing and getting through it, but i seem to get hung up when trying to install the wink app from APK. it says unknown application and will not allow for install. please let me know if there is a new way around this or if I missed a step somewhere. :(

You can solely use it with SmartThings but you need to root it as I show in my other video's. If you don't root it, you will keep getting logged out of SmartThings. When you root it you can also install the Google Play Store too. After rooting you can remove Wink too if you are not using it at all plus install a full screen app etc. I show all of this expect the actual SmartThings install. If I get time I will make a video of exactly that but since the Wink Wall unit was discontinued by Wink I haven't put any time into new videos for it.

thanks! Lots of good launchers for downloading that do most of the work, it's just a matter of placement for the most part. The harder part is getting everything all set for your application use (Automation / convenience) and practical use etc. You can also connect the relay to bluetooth speakers, I found that very helpful for using it as whole hose music controller. Sonos works great too as well as some other streaming apps including it will tie into Alexia if you have that or google home.

Options are that you can load a few apps that force it to stop or just force it close a few times. You can can root it and then unload it, and load the google WINK version which is the same. Only downfall is the loss of the buttons when going that route. . Did you upgrade WINK or is it at the factory reset or new out of the box version?

Like having spotify on it, and playing music to the Echo...but spotify will crash the device running it out of memory. Too bad wink will not make a new updated version.

I find that the latest Total Launcher and Google Now desktops are fast with the apps being fairly response and working well for a on the wall device. For $75 is a steal and will work for quick access to lights, music and information widgets. It's not like the latest smart phone or tablet on the market with the super fast chips but still a good value and use. Thanks for the comments, video took a long time to complete. I am working on an update for a Star Trek interface, more tips on cool applications and or uses etc. PS - I tried Spotify and it didn't crash, widget worked fine too.

Hi thanks for this. I’ve come across a problem on three of the relays I have tried this on. I get “unfortunately, wink relay has stopped” so it quits, and then also it’s unable to update my brand new Relays to the current software version. Anyone else having these issues? Thanks

Are you taking the wink relay from factory fresh or factory restore and applying the changes per the video? After you do so the Wink app quits? Did you first configure the wink relay software, update then follow the video? Generally when you want to add the the other apps you want to get rid of the built in wink relay app and use the standard android version, only downfall is if you are using the buttons on the right you need to do additional work to get those working outside of the built in app. The Wink Relay has an older version of the Android operating system and as time goes it will be less compatible with the newer apps being released. With that said it still works will everything that is out there and shown. I suggest if you are going hybrid and keeping the wink software intact you should keep the extra apps to a minimum. The Wink Relay is limited in memory and CPU which is a shame as it's a great wall controller but quickly falling out of date. When the app quits what happens? does it just restart?

Tech Fan , thanks so much for the reply. Yes I was following the instructions per your video. I had the same issue for a two year old relay as well as a fresh one (I was able to pick up four from HD the other day). So I’m able to set them up as you advise, but after I reboot and log in, it seems to work for a short while, it then tries to auto-update, when I run into issues. It basically can’t do the software update and then after some time quits the app with the error that it’s stopped. Restarting the wink helps for a time, but issue will reoccur. I spoke to wink support and apparently they have a recent issue they are trying to fix with regard to the software updates. Hopefully that’s true! I do use the switch buttons, which is why I want the native software working. Thanks again. Keep up the great vids!

Are you saying there is no way to stop the auto-update, I remember being able to suppress any updates and also remember applying the update with it still working fine? I haven't done one of these in a while and maybe the latest updated software they are pushing has made changes which is the actual issue as you noted. The downfall of these relays is that WINK has stopped production and software updates are at will and not a must to continue support of it. Sad, I wish they were really popular and had an option to release an updated version with more CPU and memory. To date I can't find a good all in one wall replacement that connects direct to 120v.

They are on eBay for 65.00 new or about that. Software on them is still supported and working fine as it stands or if you want change to be an android OS controller. Note that if you really are just looking for an android device to put on the wall there are many other options that have newer faster hardware for about the same just a hair more. The mount into an outlet is the best feature and ease, the downside is the hardware is older and there are no updates for the underlying OS (Android). With that said there are still updates for WINK and WINK is still selling stuff.

@@bizoyd29 I was not the one selling them but they are for sale on eBay for about $60. Just get one there and have at it. It's fairly easy to get it going and nothing is perfect with it. Note that you cannot update the android OS and or its limited CPU speed will limit how far you can really take it. A wall mounted tablet or iPAD is the way to go right now. Only advantage is the built in native WINK relay for two light switches but that's about it.

Did you first enable the debug mode Enable Android USB Debugging Mode Go to Android home screen. Pull down the notification bar. Tap "Settings" Tap "About Device" Tap on the "Build Number" button about 7 times. Developer Mode should now be unlocked and available in Settings > More > Developer Options.

Does Google Play work?

Yes it does but you have to load the correct version for Jelly Bean 4.3. One can also root the device to take it a step further to free the wall controller totally of WINK should you not own any WINK devices. I will work on a step by step for both Rooting and the Play Store in the near future.

How to identify "correct version for Jelly Bean 4.3"? I tried 9.4.52 (20171116) and it seems to succeed. But Google > Settings > Voice > "OK Google" detection continues to be stuck "retrieving settings"

If you install and run "Kingroot" and then use "Root Package Disabler" to disable wink, then run a few commands the latest google play store version will work but unless you really need the play store I don't suggest rooting it.
