Wink Relay Hack - Rooting and Google Play Store - Step by Step Install - Still Works as of May 2020

Wink Relay Hack - Rooting and Google Play Store - All Services Working! ** Step by Step ** How to
This video will demo each step till it’s all done which is to follow after you watch the other WINK HACK Video which is shown at the bottom. This will also work if you want to use it for Smartthings and rooting is at your own risk, these videos are just help guides and does not take any responsibility. Now got that out of the way :)
First download and install from APKpure a rooting program. Install and run the root feature, do not install the security features as this will remove the button at the bottom and disable a few other things that are needed.
Next download the Google Suite ZIP to your PC.

Make sure the “Developer / USB Connect” features which are showed in the Wink TIPS video for ADB Connect are enabled. This allows for ADB connect to work with accepting the connection
Install a program called Airdrop on your PC and Airdrop on the Relay from APKpure or a similar program that lets you copy files remotely over to the relay. A few other programs offer this so any will work like TeamViewer etc.
You can use Linux or Windows command prompt (First install “adb“ for windows or Linux, just google it) apt get or download .exe
Type the following from the prompt (shown in video)
Adb connect WINKIPaddress:5555
Adb shell
You should see "shell@edison_dvt:/ $"
Type the following commands (following steps in video on timing)
Note: shell@edison_dvt:/ $ SU (Might prompt on relay screen to allow permission (I didn't need to)
shell@edison_dvt:/ $ su
root@edison_dvt:/ # cd /sdcard
root@edison_dvt:/sdcard # mkdir gapps
Now you have to copy the downloaded file over to /sdcard/gapps then unzip the file so the 3 folders and one file are in the root of /gapps. This is where you will use airdroid or a similar program to copy the files over. After you copy it you will then need to extract it using "easy unrar" or a similar program. After you extract it copy the folders and file over to /gapps root as it should look like the following
sdcard/gapps/system
sdcard/gapps/optional
sdcard/gapps/META-INF
install-optional.sh
Each folder should have folders and files
Now type the following commands one by after the root prompt as shown here and follow the video for timing as well.
Notes / TIPS: In the video it shows it being done from the /GApps directory which you can ignore as well as the uppercase letters you see in the video, has no bearing since the commands were run in the actual directory. You can run them from either the root or the actual directory does not matter. "LS" is to list files, "CD .." is to back a folder and "CD SDcard" will go into or "CD SDcard/gapps" etc.
Commands to run: (mounts, sets permissions, copies files and reboots)
root@edison_dvt:/ # mount -o rw,remount /system
root@edison_dvt:/ # cp -R /sdcard/gapps/system /
root@edison_dvt:/ # chmod 755 /system/addon.d/70-gapps.sh
root@edison_dvt:/ # chmod -R 644 /system/app/*
root@edison_dvt:/ # chmod 755 /system/app
root@edison_dvt:/ # reboot
After it reboots you will see the play store now in the apps folder and after opening you will be asked to login to the store. The other google apps will update and become stable about an hour or so, this is normal and will stabilize. All apps get updated and function as they should.

So I am getting an oddity when I 'SU then mkdir gapps' it reports back # mkdir gapps mkdir failed for gapps, Read-only file system

try "sudo mkdir gapps", also you should be able to create the directory with the AirDriod app. If the first doesn't work or second I will setup the unit I used in the video and create another directory to see why it might be failing.

sudo doesn't work when SU. However the KingRoot app ran an update after and somehow removed my mutli home button then Wink took over and it had to startt over. :(

Would love to get this working, I must be missing a step, wink keeps taking over. Do physical buttons still work afterwards?

Usually if you want to run the playstore ideally you are removing the WINK relay app all together. There is a workaround for getting the buttons to work again but that's is a trade off since it has additional steps using another app. WINK wants to take over as it's a native app they imbedded form but you can force it to stop running for a while or all together. If you first let the WINK software update at all you will not be able to use it outside of WINK just to note. They closed the holes in the updates but the factory restore has the original first that lets you modify it etc. Hope that helps somewhat, there is no magical answer to get these to do everything like a regular android device.

I have purchased 2 Wink Relay, are they defective, have you had any problems with your unit?

I purchased 4 when they went on sale during the holiday's all 4 worked fine. When you say defective, were they new in the box? Do they not boot at all? So you get the green light on the module but the when you connect the touchscreen nothing happens? I have to admit that having two new brand new out of the box should be rare, I get the the chance of one but two would be rare. Note that a neural wire is very important to get it to work, the neutral must be connected back to the panel as well a ground. In older homes Neutral or Ground can be missing. Also if you are trying to wire it up to a light switch that is just a passthrough of hot that it's not going to work either. So what's your setup and do you get a green light on the module front (this is with the touch screen panel off). Hope this helps?

Tech Fan Sorry for the misinformation. I meant if your Wink relays are till this day working properly? I just bought my units at Homedepot sealed brand new unopened which is rare. I was just concerned because I read the bad reviews on Amazon.

Nah, I read it wrong to be honest. Yes they work fine, folks don't like certain aspects of the device and many of those reviews are early on when there were lots of bugs. The last revision works fine but as many have noted it's limited as it stands which is why I created the video's how to get more out of it. I also have a Wink Hub with a ton of devices paired to it that do various things during the day, lights, locks and general functions controlling my home. If I was 100% honest I rarely use the touch controller as it's the same interface as my iPhone, iPad and others I have around the house. Another device that makes the touchpad less useful for me is my Echo's that I have installed around the house as well. It's much quicker for me to speak a command vs going up to a controller or even on my phone. I have one controller installed by my front door that I occasionally use, since I have sensors for entry and exit I really don't need to activate any lights. I do look at the touchscreen when passing by from time to time is the temperature, time and weather as well as the latest news. As the original WINK stands you will see temp, time and quick buttons for information on the top screen etc. Echo will pair with the Wink Hub too which is nice, the one thing great about the touchscreen controller is that it has a relay for two light switches, that's a plus for sure. So it saves me having to install another GE Zwave controller etc. One other thing folks have complained about is overall speed of the touchscreen controller but I don't think it's that bad, not as zippy as the latest iPhone or Android devices but it gets the job done. Hope that helps?

my wink relay is bricked now after a few weeks with everything working fine. It isn't able to find the original edison.zip file. Any idea what to do?

Google search for Edison.zip first. Enter "ADB connect yourIPaddress" (you should see the connection message or one saying you're already connected) > Enter "ADB root" > Enter "ADB mount -o remount,rw /device" > Enter "ADB push edison.zip /device" (this takes a bit, but you see a progress indicator) > Press the reset button and hold the top switch in to bring up the system menu. I used the lower switch to select the last option (reset to factory image) and let it run. Instead of getting that "unable to verify edison.zip" error, you should see it load back to the factory default and go through the normal prompts.

Ok thank you I'll see if I can get this to work. It is stuck on the bios page no os so idk if it could even connect to wifi to get the ip address but I'm about to order a usb to terminal cable and rip off the backplate and solder it on.

@@TechFan it doesn't work... I get a connection refused when I try to use the sudo adb connect tot he ip of the wink relay... I also cannot get the wink relay to go to the home android screen using the cover of the sensor and bottom button...

@@samgolden1902 did you enable it? It's been a while but do a lookup on android adb connect. That part should work as there is nothing new that would stop it from working.
