2003, we converted a 1997 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle. I insulated the box with acoustic insulation, plus three inches of rigid board. I installed 3x1 dual-pane windows. We heat with propane. A five-gallon tank lasts nearly two weeks. After nearly two decades of full-time live-aboard, our rig is constantly evolving.

OK Buddy. I guess you need to know some old boy scout tricks about cold weather camping and winter survival. I know these tricks work. I have slept very comfy in 20 below in a tent with no external heater. If you sleep in a sleeping bag, take off all your clothes and stuff them down by your feet The sleeping bag works best with little to no clothes on. When you wake up, your clothes will be warm because they are in the bag with you. If you are just using blankets that can shift around and uncover your feet, then I would get rid of all that and just keep 1 blanket and a good cold weather bag. If you get 2 bags, zip them together so that Coda can be under the covers also.

You should get a wool blanket. Like a Army style blanket and wool. Socks. They have those stores where you can buy army stuff. You can also get them on ebay.

Heated socks were a nice touch,seems like they would be the most beneficial besides the sleeping bag of course. Great tips.

I found my best winter camp hack... a 4' x 4' fleece blanket over my head and arms.. No mummy bag clostrafobia but i'm covered and it lets the moisture out.
@robertottwell6054 жыл бұрын
Phil lay the 12 volt blanket on the bottom and sleep on top of it. They draw not much power so you can have one for you and one for koda . I sleep in the liner of a military jacket and a poncho liner with the bag on top that way your not all confined in the mummy bag. It works really good.

She’s such a good dog. An easy trick for warmth while camping in the cold is to boil enough water to fill a Nalgene bottle. Put the hot bottle in a sock and stuff it into the foot of your sleeping bag. Works really well!

Just found your channel a couple days ago. Very cool! Love your Jeep setup! And, LOVE your enthusiasm! High fives from Montreal, Quebec, Canada! (I've never done any overlanding, but, I've done more than my share of winter camping. Keeping warm always a balance act when out in the winter! Have fun! I look forward to watching more of your adventures.

Hey Phil, I got a recommendation for a really good sleeping bag. Its called a Wiggys Bag. They are used by US special forces and are made of a duck down material. Bit expensive at about $200 but I've had one for over a decade. Slept in -20 in a hammock no problem and in the summer.
@afallencheetah66104 жыл бұрын
Also: DO NOT SLEEP WITH HANDWARMERS!!! Doesn't matter if its a usb or a chemical heater there is a chance that they can overheat and catch fire. Please be safe mate, and mob on.

I’m too claustrophobic for a mummy bag and can’t sleep in a coat either. I’ll have to do more blanket layers I suppose. I have a rechargeable hot water bottle that can warm up the foot area before climbing into bed. So how cold was it over night?

$100 diesel heater with an insulated duct running to tent door..

after recently getting and installing an 8kw diesel heater i got for $160 which EFFORTLESSLY keeps my tiny house 80 degrees during 20-30 degree weather (more than 10 days so far and have 1/3 left on first 5l tank fill-up), i was thinking the same thing!...but it needs to be a bit away so that he doesn't die from the fumes, because the tent is basically open to all gases. maybe mount it on the front of the truck? not sure how to make it work exactly... :/
