Shug, In all my awe about our shout out last night I forgot to give credit where it is due. We have watched all your videos forever and it was on one of them that you gave a link to the Outdoor Samaritan Scholarship (OSS). Because of that link I entered the scholarship and received gear to learn backpack camping. It was one of those members that knew you are one of my heroes that must have contacted you (it was not a relative). They have not only given me gear but are now encouraging me as I try to learn. I can not thank them and you enough. Jd

Wow, that Svea stove noise brings back a lot of memories. That was my go to stove for my early backpacking days 50 years ago. I still have mine but it got replaced for daily use by Jetboils, MSRs etc. . Optimus made a small primer pump and cap that allowed for quicker starts that I still have. Thanks for your videos, I am getting back into backpacking and going the lightweight/hammock path to save wear on the old knees. I've re-learned a lot of great things.

Shug, your clips are amazing, I'm going to do hammock camping one day. Glad I am not the only one making pancakes on hikes. What is protecting you from animals at night? Each time I hike in my home mountains I would not sleep without a wood fire, always afraid of wolves in winter and summer, and bears in summer. I have seen their tracks, I know they are around... I was always told that the wild animals will not approach the fire, ... it worked so far. Cheers, Chris.

Shug, I learn so much from your videos, and I wish you taught when I was in school! One tip on the SVEA stove... If you remove the valve key (throttle extension) while the stove is running, it won't get so hot as to burn your fingers. Just put it on each time you want to make an adjustment. Fortunately, it's on a chain, so you can't lose it.

Beautiful spring weather in the middle of January. Good thing you don't have much snow or you would be floundring in those wee snow shoes! That SVEA was my favorite stove in my teens and twenties, then it just disappeared, don't know whether I loaned it to someone and it didn't come back, or someone stole it, or what. I looked for years and couldn't find another one to replace it so I bought the MSR Whisperlite myself too! Then last year I found myself another SVEA stove, and I don't know which my favorite is!!!

Shug, Love your sense of humor and practical clothing and gear tips - keep up the good work. Two suggestions to make your videos even more informative- show a map of the locations of camping trips. Second suggestion is to include the most important clothing/gear info- price. Many are just to expensive, some are low budget which is fantastic. If we do a winter camping/sled trip into Baxter State Park in Northern Maine we will invite you along. All the best Den in NH
@shugemery8 жыл бұрын
I always mean to show a map but just don't. Some of my trip videos show them but I figure folks can research the map part. I should. But I don't. I might. But I won't. Pricing......hmmmmm. Prices vary and sometimes I get a deal being a video guy so I just stay mute on it. Again...folks can look it up. Sometimes I don't even know the price. I want people to research. Helps get to it. I'll give a lot and put it out....but not everything. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJu1oJ5rodB6ias

Great video. In the morning, when "nature calls", I try to find a couple smaller trees about 4' apart, then I wrap a 1" wide strap around the both of them, about 2' from the ground, then straddle/sit on the loop created by the strap. I'm sure to wrap it so it doesn't slip down the tree though. With that method, now my girlfriend don't complain about camping.

Loved the video Shug! I thought your thoughts on the "morning constitutional" was very eloquent for such a "messy" subject but then I might be biased-that's basically the same way I do it too. Gotta mention how I love that little Svea stove myself. Because it's self pressurizing with heat you just have to be careful using a windscreen so it doesn't get too hot and blow it's valve spraying fuel and what-not. Again loved the video! Hey it's on to number 2. I mean video 2.

Great stove talke Shug. Hey, have you ever carried a little 2 or 4oz bottle of DA/Heet for priming purposes. I've been doing this the past couple winters with the Whisperlite and it sure makes things easy rather than trying to meter out just the right amount of WG through the imprecise valve on the fuel bottle. It only takes about a 1/4-1/2oz squirt in the priming pan. Curious what you though about that. Thanks buddy!

Great trip Shug. Never have liked the wisper light type stoves. There is way too much fiddling with priming and getting things just right so they will burn. Have seen some scouts try to use these and the fuel has contaminents in it and plugs the jets. Then there they are trying to clean the jets and tearing the stoves apart in the field. Scouting has placed alcohol stoves on the tabu list so when I am out with them I use a pocket rocket. Quick and easy peasy, otherwise when by myself it is alcohol unless I am melting snow for water.

Shug, +1 on the T-Shirt. I would proudly wear one down here in the piney swamps. Might be a different type of "sell out" than you meant :) You really should explore a Shug line of accessories. Everybody wants a little Shug in their lives don't cha know?Did you design the logo? Its perfect! Thanks for your videos. All the best to you and your family.

I used to use some of the fire paste in a tube or the blocks of triox broken up and put around the base of the burner to prime it to burn. from the looks of the lid for the SVEA you could purchase a pump for it as well. Have both and love them. By the way what was all that white stuff, it was sunny most of our winter and I don't think we got below the 40s. West Coast and all that

Shug, you always have videos. Last year or so you made a flite streak type plane electric and had some success. You commented about adding FLAPS? Did you get that modification done? I made my swordman 18 electric but my gear was just too heavy until I used it on a Baby Pathfinder and a Stork. Now I know I am not meant to be a farmer since I do not plow so much grass. Keep on tracking and juggling and building and of course flying. You keep me and my family smiling and laughing. Job well done! Tally ho Richard "Rosie" Rosenau Jr. Yelm , WA

Lol I am like you. I fly year round... RC or U/C but only electric since they work so well these days. Unlike the RC Cox powered foam glider back in the late 80s. Flew or glided down like a rock. I also have gas from Cox 049 to OK Cub 049 to Norvell 049-061 to Fox 15-60s. Ahh not much beats the sweet smell of nitro and the whine of the gassers. But the locals would shut me down if I flew them. They think these electric planes are so cute and no clue that they can be just as dangerous.

I tell ya shug, you are quite the salesman. Just picked up the jacks r better hudson river down quilt which I'd heard you rave about (it's on sale right now). You've got me coveting that boreal shirt as well!

Alexander Haney I just list my gear because folks ask. If they get a sale then cool. The Boreal is a heirloom piece.

oh yes I know! I really appreciate it too, because I won't buy gear without reviews and those can be harder to come by with the smaller cottage companies I like to support! so thanks :)

Hilarious! I just came across your videos, and sub'd because I thought you were awesome. Then about an hour ago, I realized you were from the great white North. No wonder I liked you. Northerners are awesome! I grew up in the Iron Range in MN. 👍

Great video and editing! All your vids are good but this one seemed different somehow. That old stove is awesome...like it's struggling and you want to pull for it to get the job done and it does. Take care!

Hints for your Svea 123R stove. Insulate the stove from the cold snow. A piece of cardboard, thin plywood or closed cell foam pad works well. There IS a pump for this stove and it is used to pressureise the tank for priming. Make sure you don't fill the stove all the way up. You need a space of air to expand when heated to keep your stove pressurised. The carbon felt idea is a new one to me but sounds great. I have had my stove for 40 years. This was the first backpacking stove I bought and I just can't post with it. Hope this helps
