Winter Comes Early to Shropshire and the Garden Birds Return

Because of the mild autumn and plentiful supply of natural food there has been less bird activity in the garden this year but an early and severe taste of winter with 30cm of snow and temperatures falling as low as minus 13 at nearby Shawbury has changed all that. The garden is now full of activity with all of the usual birds returning plus some of the birds that I usually only see later in the winter such as the Redwings, Blackcap and loads of Reed Buntings.

Lovely to see such pristine snow, and I specially enjoyed studying the details in the footage of the woodpecker. Thank you for a delightful film.

Thank you for your comments, they are much appreciated as I was unsure whether or not to shorten the woodpecker clip, I thought I might be too long to hold the viewers attention, but in the end I decided not to. Have a good weekend, Maurice.

We had some great snow in Leominster, Herefordshire also. I couldn't believe the amount of black birds I had on my feeders! First year feeding the birds and I love it

As you said Stuart the blackbirds are one of the first birds to flock into the garden when the ground gets hard with the frost or covered in snow. Keep up the good work feeding the birds.

Wonderful video and very well filmed dear Maurice! The birds must now search for food properly. Greetings, Annemieke

Similar situation here in the Wisconsin North Woods, Maurice. Though for the first time I have starlings making regular visits. I've not had them in winter before, and saw few of them in this vicinity in the past. Loved the shots with the snow streaming down around the birds - great visual effect.

Thanks so much for watching and for your comments. Our winters don't usually start this early, I haven't seen so much snow for many years and for most of the young children this is the first time they have seen any meaningful amount of snow. It certainly brought the birds back into the garden, but not so many starlings as I usually see though, they are declining over here and are now on the red list. I have still got a small roost of then in the ivy on the rear of the house and the local sparrowhawk comes in most days to try his luck as they come in to roost for the night.

When the weather finally took a turn for real winter, the redpolls, siskins and goldfinches started arriving in large numbers at the feeders around the area. Just got snow cleaned off the feeders - but not much activity today other than a couple chickadees. Had an owl hooting in the backyard a couple nights ago. Take care and best wishes to you and the birds over there.

Great video like always. What is that pink stuff you're putting in the trees?

Thank you for your kind comments. The pink stiff is pieces from a "bug & berry" suet block that I press into holes in the tree trunk.

Awesome! Such a big range of species! I'm a very young birdwatcher and I'm looking forward to snow and frost :) In my garden in central Poland this winter I've watched blue tits, great tits, 5 blackbirds, 2 jays, 3 collared doves, robin, great spotted woodpecker, lesser spotted woodpecker, redpolls, hawfinch, chaffinch, greenfinch, tree and house sparrows so far. If you like, please visit my channel.

I figured out why Europeans all that gold stop. Taking it out of the Antarctic and now the North Pole. Gold will change England into a ice cap. Have you noticed it's been getting colder Russian has noticed it.
