My issue with this quote unquote energy crisis is that these companies had 10 years to fix the energy grid and prepare for the next freezing weather catastrophe. *This should never have happened.* Companies should have set aside money in the budget to make improvements every year until it met the freezing winter standards. They had TEN YEARS to make modifications! *This mess is ridiculous!!*

Infrastructure on this scale will never be done by for profit corporations. It will have to be a federal project. And as such, must focus on renewables working along side current means. Shell released a statement saying we reached peak potential for oil and gas in 2019. That means, what’s left is all that’s left. So, renewables are a fact of life, and the United States have the opportunity to lead the world, if they have the spine, and the vision. Massive winter storms? Most likely nothing by itself will help. But, if we had proper storage media in homes, a huge push toward solar, and regulations mandating weatherizing power grids, things might have been different in so many states suffering right now....
@allendean9807
@allendean9807 4 жыл бұрын
@@mikeekim242 that depends upon supply and demand. If there was a national push for products like Tesla roofing, demand would massively decrease, making costs much cheaper. Add to this storage mediums to back up homes in such emergencies, and you have a nation of self sufficiency- something so many in our country are all for. Imagine a nation with country wide broadband for all. Renewables subsidized to the point everyone can afford to make their own power and store it on site? It’s doable. The tech is here. Between starlight, Tesla roofs and Tesla battery power packs, all the government will need to do at this point is invest. Simple.
@mikeekim242
@mikeekim242 4 жыл бұрын
@@allendean9807 "subsidized" That's a word that means somebody will suffer. The government never pays for anything, we do. Those Tesla roofs are cool, but solar isn't affordable, or reliable enough yet. Most likely it will be another 30 years before we see this kind of weather in Texas again, so it would be cheaper to have a fireplace installed. You do understand part of the problem was the amount of wind power we have in Texas, and that those wind turbines failed? and with all the cloud cover we've had this week, and that solar would not be enough to keep a house warm for a week? A fifty thousand dollar roof can't change those facts. I've been in construction for over 36 years believe me when I say I would love be able to live off grid and have a Tesla 1 ton truck that can haul several tons around for hundreds of miles each day, but we're just not there yet, and it's certainly not affordable.

Funny how El Paso County doesn’t seem to have this issue of rolling blackouts. Maybe it’s because they don’t rely upon a decrepit energy grid that has minimally insulated transformers like the rest of Texas? At least the actual power lines didn't go down like the NE Ice Storm that toppled the main electrical transmission lines for millions of customers. Some of us went weeks without power as the grid had to be physically rebuilt from the ground up.

We in the NE are prepared for that, think about it. It almost never gets cold in Houston.

In Iowa 42% of its electricity in produced by wind power. They are not having any problems with their power grid and the temperature there has been in the teens. I wonder why?

Its supply and demand. Simple mathmatics. The 4 major Texas metro areas have grown nearly 70% since 2000 with very little MW's added. Subtract MW's loss from coal plants shutterd = Freeze your .... off.

@@watsonh.5044 there’s no need to refute your statements when the irrefutable truth is that your state has more than enough energy to meet the demands right now. It’s simply mis-managed. You can use cherry picked facts to support your arguments until your little heart’s desire. Problem is that I, much like the universe, don’t entertain emotional statements and opinions. Capacity is not the problem. Availability is the issue.

I feel this is needed to be said. If you have a gas stove and a match, lite the match 1st, 2nd hold it by the gas burner 3rd turn the gas to that burner on and your stove will lite up. Now DO NOT leave the gas on before you get your match working, will cause a fire explosion if you did that. So match then gas. Keep that in mind.
