The People's Liberation Army Navy (yeah, that's really the full official name -- maybe it sounds better in Mandarin) has expanded rapidly over the last two decades, and has some impressive looking warships. What it lacks is any actual naval battle experience since the formation of the People's Republic of China in 1946-47. The U.S. Navy, on the other hand, has fought two major world wars (winning both) and has been projecting American power around the world for over 100 years. The U.S. Navy has more combat experience in the East China Sea and South China Sea than China does. And the U.S. Navy in Asia is solidly and silently backed by the very professional Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, which may just be one of the two or three most professional navies in the world today. Add the Indians and the Aussies to the mix, and the PLA Navy does not look quite as intimidating.

Think about WW2, the U.S had a navy larger than every other navy in the world combined and they had basically unlimited supplies. Despite all the firepower, the ability to easily replace lost equipment and have mountains of supplies on the beach by the end of the day, they still suffered heavy casualties taking tiny islands from starving Japanese Soldiers. How do you think China, with no experience in amphibious warfare and logistics is going to fare trying to conquer a huge, heavily fortified island, equipped with modern military technology and filled with millions of people capable of fighting back?

Chinese destroyers are far more advanced than American destroyers. They are also new as recently constructed from 2016-2022, compare to rusting decades of US navy ships. The only bullshit so called advantage of US navy is experience which won't save them from thousands of guided missiles and nuclear torpedoes.

Three points: China does not have a huge lengthy coastline, they are susceptible to blockade and most of their industrial capacity relies on imports. That will get strangled and starved. Just like Germany and Japan in WW2. Second, the US and their Allies have many small carriers, call them helicopter carriers, where they can deploy assets like the f35. Last, the USN and all their allies navies are well drilled and experience in co-ordinated naval operations. When has China done anything at sea? I haven't even mentioned how forward deployment of assets by the west or air forces will figure into this scenario. Both sides, if they are smart, will want to avoid this conflict.

Yes totally agreed, especially nowadays China is in the forefront in Quantum Communication, Quantum/Classical Supercomputing, own chip design, electromagnetic catapult tech, laser, robotic, AI, Stealth fghters, hypersonic glider missiles, Photonic chip, EV, artificial sun reactor, tech, space exploration/station, super modern infrastructures, size, weaponry, financial strength, and a continue growing country, to name a few. Moreover, 40% + Taiwan economy is tied to the Mainland. Thus, China will not react hastily to the benefit of foreign powers. Time and Taiwan location is always on the mainland side. What has the West got it right on how China has managed to grow to their shocking and surprise. Except India, who thought that they r already way ahead in leaps and bounds. Well at least u dun qualify to a US's competitor for nothing, Democratic or not will face the same consequences.

India is a good example.isnt it, massive, with limited indigenous weapon capability, full of multinational bought weapons/systems integration and lacking much developments of self sufficiency. Foreign suppliers r v happy and India enjoys the ego. Do agree that by having modern weaponry has some potential stinks but can be easily crashed due to the same like skills, replacement and upgrading abilities as they r all foreign made.

And so why have we been struggling to field a working hypersonic missile? This style of overconfidence reminds me of the pre-war attitudes we held about Japan in WWII. Even though Japan had the worlds largest navy in 1941, we just fell back on racist stereotypes about bucktoothed, thick eyeglass wearing primatives. No one really thought they would hit Pearl. Taking Indonesia with its oil seemed more likely. Instead, both happened. We found out the hard way that the Japanese had better torpedoes, better night fighting capability and for a short while better aircraft. Reality can be a nasty thing.

And Russia was supposed to take Ukraine in three days. lol. Also, China being the "largest navy in the world" is something of a misnomer. China's navy is primarily a "green water navy," not a "blue water navy," meaning that its ships cannot move too far out from China's coastline. Certainly, it is incapable of any meaningful "worldwide power projection" in any way, shape or form (unlike the US or UK) Also, the number of ships is comprised mostly of smaller vessels, frigates and coast guard cutters, not front line warships like aircraft carriers, battleships and missile cruisers. More does not mean "more powerful" or "more capable." China is playing a numbers game and hoping no one actually takes a closer look.

China is good at Quantity, not good at quality, and in military, it's quality that matters not quantity.
@nysteven1
@nysteven1 2 жыл бұрын
That’s not always true, when you have quantity over quality in war it mostly falls on the will of the people. Two examples are the Qing dynasty in the opium wars and the soviets in the Second World War. Both sides threw their people into slaughters but the Soviet people had more will power to win. So the question really falls down to how strong is the will power of the people of china

Naval warfare is absolutely brutal. After the German Navy won the battle of Coronel on 1 Nov 1914 against the Royal Navy, off the coast of Chile, Vice Admiral von Spee refused a bouquet of flowers in celebration, saying "these will do nicely on my grave." A month later, he and most of his fleet were sunk by the British on 8 Dec 1914 in the Battle of the Falkland Islands. With no naval combat experience whatsoever and with a fleet used to operating close to home waters, the Chinese navy is not prepared for the brutal realities of naval warfare, against a well-trained and experienced opponent. The more recent Falklands conflict, launched by the Argentinian navy, resulted in the fall of the military junta after their humiliating defeat by the British. The Chinese should think long and hard before launching a war of choice whose consequences no one can forsee.

@tonysu8860

China has the largest navy only in total number of anything that can float and mount a gun on it. If you scratch the surface and look deeper, China hardly has anything that can actually accomplish a particular mission... Like air superiority, amphibious invasion which would require capable assets training and logistic support or even anything that can or would be used to protect those Chinese fishing fleets that violate economic zones. Six years ago, China had a couple aircraft carriers with no planes capable of carrier operations, no amphibious ships of any consequence, an air force with maybe 5 fighters capable of threatening a Russian, American or EU fighter or bomber fleet. Today, China's military is marginally better, it has the same 2 aircraft carriers with a 3rd about to launch, still no carrier aircraft, 2-6 amphibious ships, the same handful of air force aircraft plus 2 models (J-10C, J-20) getting closer to possibly mounting a minimal threat and demonstrated expertise in missiles of many types. The bottom line is that even today, it's unlikely that China could invade anywhere where advanced American, European or Russian military technology exists and probably still couldn't in the next 10 years at current ship building trends, but would possibly get closer to where a non-military leader could make a very stupid and costly mistake. China can bully nations that don't ask for support from AUKUS, Japan or Taiwan, but should avoid confronting anything more powerful. This is what the world may need to consider... Not any kind of successful Chinese invasion of Taiwan, the South China Sea, the East China Sea or the Sea of Japan, but the likely fact that China could simply cause damage to someone. And, it's problematic whether China could gain naval expertise to sail in the eastern Pacific, it's almost more likely that doing so would be more risk of breakdown and embarrassment than making a symbolic threatening gesture.

Chinese troops and sailors have never been in a real fight. No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy. If they do attack Taiwan the Chinese military will receive the shock of their lives. They view the US as a walk over. The US has rightly or wrongly been fighting wars for most of the 21st century. It’s assets are highly trained and blooded. The shock of first engagement will be a shattering experience for Chinese troops. The horrors of the battlefield are mind numbing and on troops inexperienced can lead to significant unit disruption and subsequent breakdowns. I know from first hand experience in Vietnam. A reasonable Chinese leader would for go this lunacy. You not only have the US against you but the world now sees you for what you are.

The US military is destabilized. White guilt, and American colonial guilt are being taught to US soldiers, and the threat of a vaccine mandate has brought sizable resignations from its established soldier base. The US army morale has been crippled, and it's not coming back until possibly next election. Meanwhile, the CCP has stated they will be ready to attack Taiwan by 2024. Do you think the US military will be better off by then, or worse?

Sounds like a story from Korean history. (Tell me if I fail to make an accurate statement.) The story I recall happened at a time when the Joseon Dynasty succession was contested. China sent a fleet to support one pretender. Japan sent a fleet to support the other pretender. The two fleets anchored in the harbor. The number of vessels sent by Japan outnumbered the vessels sent by China. ¿Japan advantage? No: a substantial percentage of the Japanese personnel were incapacitated with beri-beri. As Palki said, don’t count the quantity of the ships alone, count the quality also.

Never disturb your enemy when he's making a mistake. China is putting a lot faith into being able to use those relatively small islands as a force-multiplier for its Air Force & Navy. However, it's highly debatable how long those islands would stay operational in a full-blown conflict with a / several major Power(s).

Chinese superiority, militarily so, is a myth. China often worries about the lack of a battle-hardened army of soldiers that can put up a tough fight. And as per military discussions on the Chinese side itself, much of the PLA’s incapacity to indulge in heated armed conflicts, stems from the One-Child Policy of the Communist state which has turned out to be an unmitigated disaster for the country. In order to deal with their own mess, the PLA has been forced to resort to special training, in order to straighten up “spoiled” soldiers. As a matter of fact, the Chinese military is a non-disciplined and non-calculative force, as a result of which skirmishes initiated by overenthusiastic Chinese commanders along the LAC often end up embarrassing the top leadership in Beijing.
