Shortly after Leonard passed away, my wife and I had the opportunity to go and hear a debate on Cohen between the Catholic archbishop of my province and the head Rabbi of our local synagogue. It took place in the synagogue, which was packed. They discussed Cohen's lyrics, going back and forth on what he might have truly believed in. There are songs that indicate a deep faith, and others that suggest a calling out for someone who isn't there. The Archbishop was a real fan of his music. The Rabbi admitted he had never listened to Cohen before but "crammed" for the event. He pointed out that the song "Who By Fire" is close to a word for word transcription of a Jewish prayer. We listened to several Cohen songs and the Rabbi sang a prayer for us to give us a sense of how that tradition could have influenced Cohen. He had the last word in the evening and described Cohen by an ancient Hebrew name which translates as "God wrestler" -- someone who struggles to find God in an imperfect world.

This song, to me, is about man's constant struggle to walk in life in a way that follows in the footsteps of Christ. God does not expect perfection, but we need to reach out and grab the gift of Salvation. Not until we do that will we be granted the indwelling of God's Holy Spirit. Without the gifts of Salvation and God's Holy Spirit there is no chance that we will be judged to enter the Kingdom of God on our day of Judgement. Life is hard, very hard even when we have God's Holy Spirit dwelling day and night within us, how difficult and irreconcilable that of earth and God must be to thise who are without God's Holy Spirit. It is absolutely impossible. That is how I see it through my life as a strict Word of God Evangelical Lutheran. God Bless 🥰

Perfect for these Covid times. There are whole books and articles about Leonard Cohen's Judaism and how he incorporated it into his songs and poems--even a great film called Leonard and Marianne. He will be studied forever.

Leonard was Leonard. His Songs/poetry, religiously undertoned or not came out of his understanding of how the world works, and his place in it.And we all here loved him for it.

Sorry for the bad English, but Leonard Cohen is an inspiration to me even after his death ... the lyrics of his songs, interpretations, but, above all, his humility. Your loss will always hurt !!!!!!!!!!

This is so amazing. I was there. It was an outdoor concert. The sky was cloudy and it was raining just a little, the whole evening. As they started singing this song, the clouds made a whole in the sky and the sun was shining straight towards the stage. In the end of the song the sun wen't in the clouds again. RIP Leonard :)

i just had memories of being in Montreal and Suzi taking me shopping at some woman's private home. suzi would take me shopping. hazel too. to prep me with clothes makeup and the like. this particular memory is in relation to selecting off a coat rack in this lady's 'finished' basement set up.... clothes for women. all kinds of nice quality stuff. anyway, i recall selecting skirt, pants, jacket made of those same materials. exact. i must have been there at this event. it is in memory. i wish i could remember more of these angels. perhaps i was fortunate enough to see them sing. now grateful to see then from home. my heart is lighter for their love Hare Krsna

Leonard Cohen's voice sounds like the voice of a man who has lived and has much more depth because of that. Similarly, when I hear It Ain't Dark Yet by Bob Dylan, it carries so much more weight, because of its roughness. It may not sound as melodic as it once did, but it moves you more. ,
