Wiring A Signal To DCC
Video V.47
Follow on from building a signal gantry
In this video I look at how to install a signal onto the layout using the DCC power feed via a point turnout to change the signal colour.
Special Thanks to Brian

Great video Garry very informative as always, I love you last video on how built your Signal so simple to make and really looks the part. I Agree Brian Lambert's web site is a excellent reference point for all things electrical, i found his site a couple of years back and I really found it a great resource. thanks for sharing Cheers ... Brian’s site is the Bible of railway wiring as far as I’m concerned think he started RMweb forum too. Yeah I found his site about 3 years ago at the same time Richard at Everard Junction started his build - so this is what brought me back to the whole world of railways And this is what gave me confidence to build my dream layout I’ve never looked back to what if Just loving the hobby and I feel like a restored loco 😝 Thank the lord for Brian 😂 Thanks as always buddy Take it easy 👍 Garry

Great way to switch the signal lights. I do something similar for the status indicator lights on my control panel. Cool intro video as the train moves along the platform. Nice to get a little sneak peak of what else you're working, too! Iain

Thanks Iain Always seem to be tinkering with something lol My signal controller is actually a block signal detection unit for a control panel but instead of having the leds as indication in the panel - I just wired all my signals to it so it now runs it self changing signals as trains pass I do like the switching from the points to show route detection and very easy to set up as you know Lots of little projects and new stuff on the horizon 😉 That’s why we love this hobby Thanks again buddy Take care 👍 Garry

Thanks jerry think since I did my video stock has diminished lol My fault It’s is tricky to find especially as not near a local shop but who is now days 🤪 I used Latrice as what I had spare u could use a different size as my other signal is slightly bigger size I think it’s 17 mm or around about and looks better if adding more than one to it as the ones on my layout near the station 👍 I showed the smaller just to be slightly prototypical as I knew someone out there would slate me 😂 lol Cheers again buddy 😝👍

Hi Garry, a great video very informative your layout looks fab, my layout that I am building is only small about 7' -10 inches by about 4'-7inches at it widest point so if this one works out O.K. I think I am going to have to get myself a shed, I am just waiting for a camera to come it should be here this week sometime then hopefully I can put a video up. Anyway I look forward to your next video. Regards George..

Great stuff Garry, Im not the best at wiring but that is a great tip thanks. I have noticed some of my led lights have failed for some reason and i’ve had to replace them. I’ll get it in the end ha ha ha. All the best Duncan, PS, your layout is looking great !!!

That's an easy way to wire a signal. Now if you wanted to make it more prototypical you could add a catch point at the signal which would protect the main line from any mishaps. Keith

Many thanks And apologies if I appeared intense It’s one of those things that can get very confusing I do agree. Please don’t take this as myself teaching you to walk a dog Technically the dcc is ac powered which provided u add a resistor to the feed to the LED all will be good My advice is to wire a dummy led as a test before wiring your new lights just to be safe 👍 Thanks again Garry

Hoping to change to DCC one day but only just finished my first ever layout
@cheekytek
@cheekytek 5 жыл бұрын
Oh wow DCC is not as scary to what lots say wiring in my opinion is easier as DC would need isolating in districts to run similar It’s just real nice parking up loco’s on a siding with out them all moving 😉 This is now my Forth layout and things just get better wishing all the best Garry

Hello cheekytek just wondering if you are able to go to the Gwili Railway Gala in October? Unfortunately the loco being restored won't be ready to go due to other important jobs for our 50 odd active volunteers.

Hi Garry, with your gradient to the second level what’s your incline and do all your locos manage it ok? steam and diesel??
@cheekytek
@cheekytek 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin This is always a topical question it’s not the best to model but only used as a storage siding I used most of the curves to take the height down which is hidden under the layout In scale terms it’s 0-3 inch over 2 meters - not totally ideal but it works and that’s all it’s needs to do The only two that struggle the incline is the Hornby 423 cep as 4car and my MPV everything else seems to manage it 👍 Trial and error is the best way to build something like this due to my restricted space Hope this helps 😉 All the best Garry

cheekytek Hi Gary, that sounds good, I’ll have to mock up an incline and see how the locos deal with it before making a permanent fixing, cheers

Hi Gary, Ive turned down the LED’s and all seems ok. some are dim and others really bright ?????? Is it ok to run them direct from my Gaugemaster control box ? it’s from the 4th terminal as ive only got 3 tracks. Trouble is the box gets extremely hot. I also have noticed that the led’s do have resistors on them already. No prob if your not sure . All the best Duncan.

Hi Duncan I’m Down in Cornwall at moment and Internet is poor lol Power for the control is ok but makes sure your not feeding more than 12v as you turn the knob as some controllers feed more current I used to run my old engine shed lights in a old controller but found it burnt out the lights too this is due to the power wave form -from the controller I believe more suited for motor power as opposed to LED As recommended and what I use is an independent 12v supply and are readily available from likes of Gaugemaster/ block signalling and many others and are fairly cheap in comparison I find these are selective in voltage 3 5 9 12 to suit whatever u run and I believe the block signalling ones have 3 outputs at your required volts If one is brightest than other you may have different volt bulbs brighter being lower to my previous experience Again for what is easy 12v supply but a direct constant feed definitely will prolong the LED life Sorry to go on 😬 but I had the same issues and just hope this helps 👍 I have added the link to what I mentioned just to give you an idea www.blocksignalling.co.uk/index.php/12v-dc-power-supply-with-universal-input-psu1 As I feel your frustration All the best Garry

Hi Garry thanks for that info, very helpful. Sorry I bothered you on your holiday. I live in Cornwall and was wondering where you were . We live on the side of Bodmin Moor and know about weak signals ha ha ha. If you were close enough you could call in for a cuppa and see the layout. Thanks again for your reply and have a great time, hope the sun shines for you all. All the best Duncan. .
