Something I've often pointed out about the humor in Archer is that its office humor. A lot of the comedy is based on inside jokes. Long-time watchers are rewarded for sticking around and knowing the origin of these inside jokes.

Something else I really like about Archer is his lack of sympathy towards most of the people dying, getting hurt or suffering, but he shows a very sensitive side when it's about animals, not just the ocelot but in general. Or his reaction when Lana calls him!

I'm surprised that talking about the phone messages hoax you didn't mention that one scene in S7 where Archer ACTUALLY calls his mother for help, but she refuses to answer out of the conviction that it's another if his elaborate messages. It's part of an effort in the later seasons to actively deconstruct Archer's figure by giving concrete consequences and weight to his antics: refusal to communicate? Leads to nobody believing him when he's in actual need of help. Going in without a plan to execute? In the first seasons it would lead to some bruises, worst case scenario a slap on the hand from Malory; in S7 it leads to Archer being shot in his closest brushing with death so far. Even S8, actually a coma dream, shows this with the slow, painstaking physical deterioration of Archer through the episodes. Every little fuck-up brings to a consequence, a tangible one, and Archer is at his most historically vulnerable.

I still feel you guys missed a huge portion of the philosophy of Archer. Specifically that he is an asshole without shame who ends up doing the right thing (usually), while his outer circle of friends pretend to be better human beings and are truly a little worse of an asshole than he is. Also he is kind of a reverse inspector gadget, where as gadget has no skill to a task and succeeds, and archer has an amazing skill set and still things go out of its way to fail.

@feliperisseto9113
@feliperisseto9113 2 жыл бұрын
Most people tend to hide their flaws and expose his qualities, but Archer is the opposite of that. He exposes the worst of him to everyone, and hides all his talents. Probably because he is so insecure that he legit believes people will not like him, so he rather call for attention by being a asshole than risk to being alone. He is very smart, extremely competent, he shows that he legit cares about people, and is borderline heroic sometimes. Most of the characters of the show judge him harshly (a lot of times with total reason) despite some of them being just as horrible as he is. Lana is a hypocrite, Cyril is a selfish coward, Malory criticizes Archer but ignores the fact that she is dealing with the monster she created, etc. They just pretend to be good people while use Archer as a excuse for their bad behavior. They are all toxic, broken people feeding the bad tendencies of one another.

He didn't directly address the issue of the timeline but I think he gave us some tools for understanding it. Since the show is parodying James Bond, it often gives the nod to the 60s and 70s which were the prime of that series. But just as Bond often uses tech that seems anachronistic for his time, the show can also use tech that seems as if it belongs in the future like Cyborg Barry or Krieger's clones. Also, Archer can slip back and forth through time to pick a pop culture reference because it's more important to make the joke than to be consistent.

well you gotta remember, the 60s and 70s were basically closest to the atomic era. There definition of the future, and what we precieve as the future changed with the technological crunches. With there versions of tech, it was top of the line. With ours, it is still top of the line, but just the same thing only with better features.

While machismo plays a part in Archer's character, I don't think it's the central theme of the whole show. Lana is also an expression of female empowerment, and Pam a subversion of many feminine tropes.
@RenaldyCalixte
@RenaldyCalixte 5 жыл бұрын
But Lana is somewhat of an inversion of female empowerment due to using empowerment to mask her genuine need for male companionship. In fact she gets pregnant in order to find companionship with her child but that fails when she becomes obsessed with empowering her as much as herself.

@@RenaldyCalixte As someone who has been in several relationships where I didn't have much power, I submit that passive aggressive is sometimes the only available approach. @RenaldyCalixte
@RenaldyCalixte 5 жыл бұрын
@@joshbobst1629 To clarify I'm not saying Lana's passion for female empowerment is false or lacks honesty. I wholeheartedly believe Lana wants women to be more empowered including herself. She has every right to feel the way she feels. However I do believe there's irony in a comedy sense to Lana's female empowerment based on her insecurity and how she hides it from the other female characters.

I have watched Archer so many times that I sometimes put it on as i am about to go to sleep and just listen to the words as I close my eyes and picture the situation they are in. I never realized part of that enjoyment of listening to it was the use of all these auditory jokes. Also I never noticed how much Freud had truly influenced the show. Archer is basically James Bond mixed with Burt Reynolds with a Freudian complex. I loved this video!!!!!!

And now I think I understand why this series is so good to listen. I remembered another running gag that is basically just the character miscomunicating, that is the "what part you didn't understand?" "the core concept". Awesome. And about Archer getting the health issues of his life style, I remembered also he mentioning that it would not be unreal for him to get lead poisoning for the many many many many times he got shot, and that he is lucky it never came up.

Great analysis : ) I always thought this show was about language before parody, reference or nostalgia. Its a rare example of a show that has the written word as a key element of story telling at its core. Filthy but extremely funny. Although I found the last season jarring, I think the creators have earned where they want to take these characters and stories. I find it worth the Netflix subscription alone.
