"Corporate Responsibilty"........ sounds like straight up bullshit created to enable redirection of the assumption of responsibility, despite the corporation's moral and ethical claims. In plain English, to me, this means a bunch of people working together diligently to undermine or change what societal norms are accepted through capital resource, not out of necessity but rather what they envision as a course for society and how their entity attributes to it. I could formulate entire theories about stuff like this, but i won't. For significance, i'll just point to the fact that gruesome fairy tales, stories, and books were once a societal norm that we all participated in before the advancement and even introduction of technologies such as the TV and Internet.

Bold assumption of you to attribute something like Morals to something whose entire goal is the maximasation of capital and consists (sometimes) of over thousands of people whose job it is to make sure that that is whats happening. Coco has been praised for its cultural accuracy, its music, story, animation, etc. It’s definitely worth a watch, it may be my favorite Pixar movie.

As an animator and a bit of a Disney historian, it’s worth remembering that Disney started out as Great Depression-era comfort entertainment; To lift the people’s spirits through the real-life darkness of the depression and WWII with visions of an idealistic magical world. That’s what it was, and still is to some extent. Their content has always been producer-driven “product”, not director-driven artistic statements. To be a part of Disney is to agree to work inside those parameters, even though creatively, you and the product will certainly suffer for it. After Walt Disney’s death, the company was later started on the path to becoming the soulless corporate entity that it is today. It is the talent and contributions of much lesser-known individuals who made the later films hits. Disney is the only place where (especially in the case of animation) the films can be such massive hits that make tons of money, but few people know who the directors are, and few received financial compensation in proportion to the wealth their creations generate for the company. The corporate behemoth Disney is now too big, and a bully. The company uses their power and army of lawyers to change copyright law to their liking and prevent IP’s from entering Public Domain as long as possible, even though they made their money from IP’s in the public domain themselves. Also, since Disney is in control of so much of Hollywood’s marketshare, they bully theaters, employees, and customers alike to accept their low salaries, high prices, and other outrageous terms, while the products get worse and worse. So... it’s not sad that the company is not doing so well lately.

I argue it started while Walt is alive, somewhere after the Strike, when he can't even trust his own animators, and clearly become manifest sometime in the 1960's. EPCOT was the biggest red flag to that soullessness...

In spite of Walt’s negative points however, I do credit him with caring a lot more about the quality of his product than about money. He was in a lot of debt most of the time, and many of the films were not successful when they premiered. It was only after Disneyland opened (which had been a gamble) that the company turned a reliable profit. Walt was for sure a Capitalist, but I think the fundamental difference between him and most executives today is that he was interested in financial success as a *byproduct* of the quality of the work, not Profit as an end unto itself. The pure avarice and cynicism displayed by the Disney company of today is different in character to the old days.

I agree with you. I just don't believe that culture is shaped top-down. Even "How Disney Ruined Culture" sounds great and captivating, I do also think that "How culture ruined Disney" would also apply. Why? Because culture is created from below, from above, from the left, from the right, from the air, from the ground... culture is born as the Universe did: through crashes. Hadn't Disney created lovely endings and cute characters that people wanted to see, it wouldn't be what it is today. You can't just judge an idea leaving away its context. Its unfair and misleading. The fairy tales, dark endings and gruesome death may have been a very symbol of the eighteenth century (I don't know specifically), but the twentieth century was brutally shaped by death and wars and the worst atrocities. Maybe society NEEDED that cuteness, maybe they needed stories that made them believe that life can be different. Whilst discussing culture, I think that the money-making machine argument shouldn't take so much place. Yes, they found (and forged) a formula that succeeded among a society that psychologically needed those stories. And they perfected it through a century! That's amazing. And as they have so much power, they buy what they see people love. Stories have been told since we're human. The story structure that we see on the latest movie is pretty much the same that Aristotle described three thousands years ago. The Hero's Journey was always present on blockbusters. I think that when society changes, because of the context (a pandemic may be it), culture can't help but change. Maybe when the planet starts to show more drastically that it is being devastated passing points of no return, it will be stories that will make us realize that nothing else can be done, so, instead of suiciding, we could watch happy, cute, lovely films while we gradually disappear. Wanted sad endings, huh? Thanks for the video. I couldn't have thought this without it.

Let's not forget Disney has been successfully killing Broadway for a while now too. Broadway musicals used to be ORIGINAL content that often was connected to the zeitgeist, but in the past 20 years it has gradually become a place for Disney to make a fortune doing stage adaptations of already existing stories and in the process pushing new original musicals out of the theaters. All any non-Disney stage producer can do to keep up is revivals of popular old shows or keeping up old productions--both of which are capitalizing on the familiar or the nostalgic--a move that Disney has been perfecting for years. "What about exciting and original shows like 'Hamilton'?" you might ask. Well, they own that now, go ahead and watch it on Disney+. This import of Disney's and, to some extent, all of Hollywood's content onto the NYC stages is at risk of killing an artform that already faces considerable competition from home entertainment.

I never knew the original ending, but always thought it would've been a much better ending if he never saved Gepetto, or something like that. It was so obviously about morality and the point would've stuck much more with a sad ending than with a happy one. Not that I have anything against happy endings, haha, I think that despite the criticism, happy endings have a lot of value. But in this case a sad ending was so clearly the better choice.

As a German, my parents never allowed me to watch any Disney movies as a child and I'm glad. They really made fairytales I loved since I was a child to something almost unrecognizable. Just because they aren't willing to put in the work to make anything actually original. Maybe a lot of the fairytales and stories I read as a child were dark (with people being burned alive, falling off cliffs, being eaten by geese, ..) but at least you could actually learn something from it. And they're important parts of my culture.

There is a very short scene in the movie Frozen, that I think perfectly captures what this video is all about. Remember when Ana is singing "For the First Time in Forver"? She is jumping and dancing around a hall full of paintings that are references to very famous ones. On one moment she jumps over a coach, and imitates the posture of a girl in a painting that is behind her. That painting is The Swing, the legendary masterpiece by Jean Honoré Fragonard, one of the most well known images of the Rococo Art and era in the XVIII Century. That painting illustrates a very young and beautiful girl in expensive clothes being swing by an old-looking man covered by the shadows in the background, while another young man is hidden in the bushes in front of the swing, secretly spying the girl´s underwear, while she is looking at him and deliberately opening her legs to let him see her undies and losing one shoe on the way. Basically, it is a scene that pictures a sugar daddy swinging his sugar baby while she is playing a sexy game with her secret lover right in front of him. In the Frozen version of that painting, there was no old man, and no man hidden in the bushes. The girl was being pushed directly by a young and handsome looking man and they were just a happy, young and ideal couple, with no mischief or picaresque elements that made the original painting have value and a message. That represents exactly what Disney does to the art they work with: In an attempt to made it be cute, sweet, pleasant-looking and idyllic they don´t care about destroying or taking away every single aspect that gives sense and purpose to the original work, because that´s how they consider art and entertainment should be and that´s the philosophy of what they do, make soulless and cloying adaptations that can be digestible and attractive for everyone, and I think that this phenomena increased a lot in the last years since Disney don´t care about quality anymore, just about moneymaking.

@@supersnek5 sure, media isn't the only thing preparing children for adulthood, however many of the toxic traits that this feel-good media portrays are also promoted by adults and everyday culture, making them a lot more powerful. And I wish I could say the media we consume is versatile, however sadly that's just not the case. As a tween I spent my days bored, waiting for something interesting to happen, stressing out about my non-existent love-life, desperately looking for a grand passion, but none of that ever happened and it took me a while to realize that I never even wanted any of that. I'm not blaming media but it just would've been a lot easier if my thoughts had been validated a couple times instead of constantly being fed the same old "be perfect, save the world, kiss a hottie" bullcr@p

I grew up in Germany, my parents never showed me Disney films. I still have not seen most of them, but I found them uncanny, since I grew up on the original fairy tales with their original endings. It feels like a kind of censorship, what Disney is doing.

A potentially interesting observation here is that even though disney sells wholesome that wholesomeness seems to lack much substance. When people seek out wholesome icons they seem to land on figures like Bob Ross and Mr. Rogers or even shows like The Good Place or Schitt's Creek. Wholesomeness, kindness, and caring are really needed especially in today's irony poisoned culture but the Disney aesthetic seems to remove the radical power that kindness can have.

And I don't even blame Disney in this. It's hard to expect a media conglomerate to have any soul left, especially at that scale. They are simply following the money. I do blame parents for not demanding more and pushing "wholesomeness" as the be all and end all of children's media. The obvious rebuttal to that is going to be things like torture porn.

Missing the mark a bit. The cutesyness in itself isn't the problem, it's that Everything. Is. The. Same. Omitting the walking torture from the litle mermaid or the self mutilatio of Cinderella's sisters isn't a bad thing, it's that they are virtually interchangeable. It's hard to put a finger on just what makes the disney treatment so recognizeable, but it's not just cuteness. Maybe it's th sentimentality in general. Maybe it's the cloying family values aesops. But the net effect is that you have a corporate juggernaut whose works are so predictable and so omni present that it infects everything - Not even Shrek managed to escape the rom com tropes! And now it's only going to get worse.

But judging by how popular their output is, at least some people who are aware of the negative effect must be consuming it. Btw, that study about the heroines, at least as described here, is flawed. As much as I agree that identifying with Cinderella or Belle can only lead to bad stuff, if you start with abused women, you have to also ask women who were lucky enough not to be abused, and then compare the percentages of women in the two groups who identified with the self-sacrificing heroines. Just saying.

I have a theory that three things led Disney to become where it is today: 1. Lobbying in 1990-1998 to extend copyright ownership 2. Jeffery Katzenberg's departure in 1994 to form Dreamworks (which is why Dreamworks exists in the first place) 3. Treasure Planet flopped in 2002 (which is on them by the way) which lead to 2D animation being phased out

To be fair, Classic Disney still had lots of artistical ambition and artistry in their animation. Films like Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi are all mammoth revolutionary achivements of animations. And that's just the Golden Age. I specially love Pinocchio, it's a masterpiece!

Ghibli produces things of value, with an actual philosophical message in it every single time. Disney is just corporate greed. That's the core difference between ideologies. Ghibli is led by a socialist free-thinker who dares to disagree and is inventive, creative and wants people to peacefully explore life in all its aspects. Disney is a capitalist greed-machine, an industry that has worked to dismantle the cultural heritage of countless nations for almost a century now for no other reason than base greed. The only message that Disney tells us, over and over again, is that people should stay placated to consume more product, for all eternity.

I remember when there was a series called Ever After High, which was about kids of fairytale characters. Disney got pretty petty that they kinda created the same thing (Descendants) for the Disney channel and got rid of what made EAH charming - good storytelling about duality of public opinions and morality. Sure it wasn't super well done in the original show (Ever After High has definitely simplified most of the themes it was handling), but Disney made everything absolutely cookie cutter. You can watch videos on these franchises on youtube. There are both positive and negative ones. Edit: (to not confuse anyone EAH and Des. are abriviations for Ever After High and Descendants) I found interesting information regarding Descendants and EAH rivalry. Apperantly Des. was worked on at least since 2012 (I do not know how true that is). However, based on original concept art the story was meant to be different. The influence of EAH (as far as claims go) is evident based on Audrey's (Sleeping Beauty's daughter in Des.) appearance (not design-vise but ethnicity-vise) being extremly simular to Briar Beauty's (also Sleeping Beauty's daughter but in EAH universe). In addition main Des. character (Mal) has a similar story arc and colour scheme when compared to Raven Queen (main character in EAH). Moreover, both franchises are focusing on characters rewriting their destiny. For context EAH was released in 2013 and Descendants - in 2015. *there may be more similarities but these are the most obvious. Also (based on a retrospective video about EAH on youtube), EAH and Des. books and some merch were put in stores next to each other. Maybe it was done based on similar concepts by stores or maybe... It was done based on an intent of a company (which can be done). Overall, it's a mess.

I liked how grey the characters were, the conflict with who you are vs. what people expect you/want you to be and I wish they explored the fact that Apple Whites true love seemed to be Darling Charming, not the guy her story dictates she should marry.

There are many, many, many things to criticize Disney for, but I don't think changing old stories to have a different message should be one of them. These old stories were often written in very autocratic times and basically had the message "be obedient and suffer without complaining, and you will eventually receive a reward (probably after you died). Otherwise you will meet a nasty end." I don't think that's something we need to bring back. And a good part of the problematic aspects of Disney stories are actually a remnant of these old fairytales (the limited agency of women, for example). Oh yea, when i was kid i LOOOOVEd that movie so much i did all the random research on her i even did a 5th class report and fell completely disenchanted with Disney as a whole in that moment. I still love the movie and Disney in general but now with the understanding of exactly what it is they are doing. I always thought that if they had they made the exact same movie but had given every character a different name and set it in a different area of north America we'd have just another Disney movie with a native American Princess who's story was loosely inspired by some events of the real Pocahontas, but ultimately was different and sugarcoated enough to be its own narrative. now we just have a really problematic animated movie with spectacular music that's kind of beyond social salvation...

Pocahontas is a highly romanticized adaptation of history where as Song of the South is basically an old love letter to the days of slavery from the perspective of a happy ex-slave plus the stuff with the rabbit the list goes on. In Pocahontas there's no ambiguity as to weather or not the British are the bad guys and the Native Americans are absolutely the victims. even Higgins has a line in the move that literally throws in the viewers face what the colonists did: Radcliff asks something to the effect of "y aren't they more welcoming?" and Higgins responds with "maybe because we invaded their land, cut down their trees and dug up their earth?" Pocahontas is movie not devoid of its problems but Song of the South is straight up a problem.

I mean, they even do this with Star Wars. Compare Kessel in old Star Wars books (A Gulag, where political prisoners have to farm drugs underground without sufficient air) with what we got in Solo. There where a lot of real life Nazi/Empire parallels, that are gone now, except for the look. The empire went from objectively evil metaphor for the dangers of fascism to marketable bad boys with diverse hiring practices.

The Sequels present a resurgence of fascism with even more Nazi parallels than the original trilogy presented. The Sequels show how fascist regimes are ultimately incompetent due to their obsession with military might (bigger and better guns), and how its leaders only seek power for themselves with no regard for the well being of its citizens (Hux, Phasma betraying or conspiring against First Order officers for political gain/survival; Hux leaking intel to the Resistance, Phasma lowering Starkiller's shields in order to survive, etc.) There is still a warning of the dangers of fascism and if you read "The Art of SW The Force Awakens" you would know that the creators were influenced by contemporary neo-Nazi movements when creating the First Order. The "diverse hiring practices" are simply a result of the OT being filmed in a time when minorities were rarely hired as actors (the Rebel Alliance only gained minority representation gradually as the films came out). Also, it is already established that in the SW universe there is virtually no racism between the human species so it makes sense for the FO to have a diverse human personnel. There is xenophobia for non-human species, and that fact is more pronounced in the sequels with the Resistance having more alien species than the OT had for the Rebellion. Furthermore, I would like to mention the fact that none of the "Disney era" SW films deviate from the family-friendly vibe established by George Lucas, so of course Solo a Star Wars Story wasn't about to focus on the harsh conditions the slaves on Kessel went through. All of the more "mature" or "darker" aspects of Star Wars is still present in expanded material produced under the current Lucasfilm company.

Women get overall harsher sentences for the same crimes than men, not lesser ones. That besides the statistics that clearly show that women in general commit less crimes in numbers and less serious ones. But if you look at women and men commiting the same crime, taking murder as an example here, women get much, much harder sentences than men. Especially if the victim was male. You can even see this in such grim things like childrape cases; when man rapes a girl, he gets a significantly (!) lesser sentence then if he did it to a boy. Misogyny and patriarchy / androcracy are alive and well; thanks to millions of people, esp. men, turning a blind eye on it (while simultaneously profiting from it) or even spreading more of it & thus preserving the status quo.... There are parts of this system that hurt (lower "ranking") men too - but it's also men that created it in the first place and that are upholding it still today. It didn't fall from the sky. So - even if you didn't create it, you still get your hands dirty when you spread lies like this, because you make yourself guilty of upholding and defending it.... thanks for reading.

I totally agree with you, but for me, it Rapunzel since I had read it when I was in elementary. It was one of the only fantasy books I could read. My school practiced a reading system that stopped me from reading higher than my reading level, and I absolutely loved it. Yes, it was dark, but it's ending made me smile. I still don't see how "Frozen" could be said to be based on "The Snow Queen". The only similarities are that someone got something magic in their eye and heart (not ice magic that would freeze to death a person struck by it, but a shard from an imp-made evil magic mirror that made a person see everything good as bad and vice versa), and that fraternal love helped fix the situation eventually (in the former by a single act of "true love", and in the later mostly by the fact that the heroine persevered throughout the story in the first place). Oh, and the name of the story itself. Absolutely nothing else is even remotely similar. Really, if they hadn't stated it was based on anything, I don't think anyone could have ever connected the two stories.

the worst damage Disney did is that people can't accept options, variations, experimentation, interpretations; things that are relevant in making and remaking stories since forever. Today Cinderella is *that* Cinderella;. Mulan is *that* Mulan; millennials grew with a movie? that's the only way that story is valid. And Disney keep doing live actions of its own movies to remember everyone its associations with those stories, doing that with the best technology there is, reminding everyone that nobody will do a Cinderella movie with a best quality than theirs, or with the same impact, and renewing the childish idea that there is just one way to know a story. When I was a kid in the 90's, I was also a huge fan of the earlier Don Bluth films. I actually preferred the darker colors in the animation style and themes like in "The Secret of Nimn." In "The Land Before Time," the mother dinosaur actually dies. Bluth proved a box office hit could be made without being overly bubbly. I wish we had more films like that again.

@@retrofan4963 I forgot about that one. I loved that too. Very dark story as there was a lot of antisemitism represented by the cats. The cats burn down the mouse family’s home in Russia, they come to the US where, “There are no cats in America,” but sure enough, there are cats. This parallels with the times as there was a Nazi party in the US in the 1940’s, (though never took power perhaps because of our 2 party system.) Then, there was the fact Fievel lost his family and went into despair a few times. Very real. I wasn’t as much a fan of the sequel Fievel goes west.

That being said, my previous description of An American Tail is more my adult interpretation of the movie. I’m not sure I understood all the symbolism when I was 6 or 7 years old. It’s a movie where I appreciated the real themes as an adult more so than I did as a child even though I still liked it back then.

I had a Girlfriend that cam from a totally broken family (She never really said it but there was evidence she was sexually abused too), she was obsessed with Disney movies. It was escapism. However it influenced our relationship. She, in many ways, behaved exactly like a Disney princess and treated me as a Disney prince if i look at it in retro perspective. She reflected many of this Disney wholesome true love, noble prince and gentle damsel in distress on us as couple. Basically her idea of a relationship was: I have found my prince through the power of pure love and now he will rescue me and take care of everything (constantly). Unfortunately you wont get "happy ever after" with this, because your damsel in distress will find a way to well... stay that: A damsel in (constant) distress. So in short: No, your perspective of love (or a healthy relationship for that matter) is not entirely shaped by their parents. For children in troubled family's i see the opposite. They tend to flee in fantasy's more ore seek other role models. For children that have intact family's they mostly are unaffected in their later relationships. The point here is: Children that already have bad role models, getting only more screwed up by this.

Watch Tony Stark in Iron man 1 before Disney bought Marvel. He is a womaniser, alcoholic, cynical, sarcastic and rude. Look at Tony Stark after Disney bought Marvel, He has anxiety, doesn't drink and is cracking jokes every 2 seconds eventually he becomes a father and lives in the Forest, they never go deeper into his struggles with Anxiety and alcoholism. In fact Disney doesn't allow alcohol, drugs and smoking in their movies no blood or swearing (well you get like 2 swear words a movie) this makes it very hard to explore deeper aspects of life like the consequence of death or addiction. I would have love if they explored Tony's alcoholism further because that doesn't just go away after one movie or because you are now a family man.

I think that the best fairytale I've ever seen translated to animation is *The Snow Queen,* which was produced in Soviet Russia. It changes SOME of the aspects of the story, but the primary elements are kept fairly true to Hans Christian Andersen's tale. "Frozen" simply screwed ALL of it up completely.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love Disney, but at the same time, I hate what they've become. I hate the corporate behemoth they've mutated into under Iger, I hate the monolithic monstrosity that buys up companies like Marvel, Lucasfilm and freakin' FOX, as well as all their IPs just because they can, I hate the company that has become the embodiment of the worst aspects of Eisner, Iger, and whatever party was responsible for screwing around with copyright laws. I personally want a return of the classic Disney that made lovable, entertaining animated films and none of this crap they've been spewing out, but I fear that might not be possible with the way everything's been going. But hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

This video was preceded by a MasterClass by Iger. It's too late ;-) No seriously, I still think that Disney are making good material (I purely defend them on an entertainement and artistic level, not a politics). Frozen, Marvel, Brave have some decent morality. They failed to did something meaningfull with Star Wars (but kids still love it so maybe there is more than what a cynical nostalgia is making think about it). At the same time I too can only agree with this video when they say they ruined some cultural part of story (but would I know anything about the original fairy tale if not from Disney's storytelling?). There is something very important about dark fairy taies. This is probably why I recently adopt horror story as therapetic entertainement (because I was gaslighting from Disney is hard to get away. )

yeah, I only watched three disney movies growing up: Dumbo, Goofy and Max and The treasure planet. All of which do have some more serious toines in them. I never watched any of the fairy tale ones. I konw most of the german fairy tales from books as I'm indeed german.

I’d argue that capitalism has already created a global monoculture - the answer for all problems is consumption. You can color that with whatever shades you want, that’s a monoculture at work.
