The beauty of Southpark is that the viewer's interpretation is what they want to believe. I've seen people on the right and on the left have vastly different opinions on the same episode, each believing the episode is making fun of the other when in reality it's probably making fun of both sides.
@scottdaniels81298 жыл бұрын
I've always seen them as spokesmen for the common-sense middle, they do frequently rag on left and right stupidity in the same episode. Supposedly they both lean towards libertarianism but they've never really pushed that on the show.
@MrWolfman2298 жыл бұрын
I think they do not push libertarianism because it would then lose the core of the show. The show and how it treats society is more of a pragmatic libertarian stance than a purist stand. The reason being is that a purist stance is impossible in any situation when there needs to be compromise and living alongside others. Both of the creators of South Park are registered Libertarians with the Party and the show is the simplest introduction to libertarianism I have seen. Man is flawed, so man should not force his views on other men.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humor in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

The best part about South Park is, unlike Family Guy or American Dad, it doesn't take a political side. It's truly neutral-even with the last election. Yeah, they voiced who they thought would be the better choice, but they didn't say that she would be a good president. They didn't take a stand with either republicans or democrats. That's why I think they are the best satire. Because they are actually trying to show the ridiculousness of the entire world, not just of the other group.

Bollocks they don't take a side. They are very clearly supporters of establishment republicanism. Compare their portrayals of George Bush and Sarah Palin (both rife for parody yet presented in their respective episodes as ordinary, neutral characters) to their portrayal of Trump (and later Mr Garrison). You are confusing "they say what I want to hear" with neutrality. You even said it yourself, they voiced who they thought would be a better choice. I am a Christian and I love this show. The fact that they make fun of EVERYONE is what makes it so great. I know it's blasphemous at times, but that's okay because I don't want Christianity getting any special treatment from the makers of the show. I was raised in a Christian household (pentecostal) but then left to re-evaluate my life and came back with a clearer view of things. My only wish is that people would stop being so religious, creating rules around rules. I hate the fact that when atheists think of Christians (most of them) they think of sheep, worshipping a fairy in the sky blindly. There are down to earth Christians, that see the Bible not as a book of rules, but as guide. Sorry for the rant, it's just been on my mind lately and felt it was appropriate in the comment section of South Park lol, since it has this amazing ability to bring anyone and everyone together. @@johnex1029 Define "facts." There are no scientific discoveries that hurt religious beliefs or argue that religious beliefs are false, Likewise religion in and of itself does not denigrate scientific discoveries. The only time either becomes an issue is when someone tries to use partial bits of one to build a whole philosophy from by which they achieve some sort of grandeur at the expense of others. Dawkins, for example, is never engage din science when he argues for atheism. He is engaged in philosophy, and a philosophy that has nothing to do with science at that. But he is content to dress it up in scientific terms to appeal to the ignorant. He makes himself look good and sound smart to people who have barley any grasp on either subject and that makes him rich. Likewise with the people who run the Young Earth Creationist Museum. There is nothing inherently biblical about YEC. The Bible never details the Creation process and the brief descriptions given to it are embroiled deeply in symbolism. But a lot of people make a lot of money from insisting that the Creation account is 100% literal. They're not defending their religion- if anything they're attesting to their ignorance of it. @@PierzStyx "Facts" according to the Oxford dictionary: A thing that is known or proved to be true. "There are no scientific discoveries that hurt religious beliefs or argue that religious beliefs are false..." I'll use Christianity as a benchmark. Copied from the following link, here are the first four of the eight reasons why Christianity is false. www.atheistalliance.org/thinking-out-loud/eight-reasons-christianity-is-false/. 1. There is clear evidence that prayer does not work despite the Bible promising prayers will be answered. 2. There is clear evidence that humans invent gods. Humans have invented so many gods that the default assumption should be that a god is a supernatural entity invented by humans. Christianity would need solid evidence that the Jewish god is an exception to this rule but there is no such evidence. 3. There is clear evidence that religions and gods are propagated through culture by infecting children, and no evidence that they are propagated by gods. 4. There is clear evidence that Christianity has evolved as human understanding of the world has changed whilst a real, God-given religion, should never need to change. The following support the above; numbered to match. 1. From this link www.nytimes.com/2006/03/31/health/31pray.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0. "In the study, the researchers monitored 1,802 patients at six hospitals who received coronary bypass surgery, in which doctors reroute circulation around a clogged vein or artery." "Analyzing complications in the 30 days after the operations, the researchers found no differences between those patients who were prayed for and those who were not." 2. This link shows the contradictions, inconsistencies, absurdities and flaws in the bible which are indicative that the bible is man-made as a perfect being would not have any of these. www.news24.com/MyNews24/Proof-that-religion-is-a-man-made-device-and-why-it-is-outdated-this-article-mainlyuses-Christiani-20141017. 3. Per Wikipedia, "Some secular critics believe that all religions indoctrinate their adherents, as children, and the accusation is made in the case of religious extremism." [Harris, Sam (2011). The moral landscape. Simon and Schuster.] 4. "How has Christianity changed?Its moral standards, the outward marks of holiness, the “do’s and don’t’s” seem always to be changing. When I was young, you knew you were a Christian because you didn’t drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, gamble, play cards, or go to dances or movies. Science only requires that if we claim we know something, then we know it for certain. Religion never says "I don't know" while science says it all the time... In fact, that's what science does, it finds things we don't know, investigates them till we understand them, and then we find even more questions that we don't know coming out of what we do know. @matthew Brooks No one can answer that for each individual but a lot of atheists are angry because they feel like they have been lied to their whole lives after being forced into a religion as a child. They also see the harm religion does to the world. If the religious were tolerant of other peoples beliefs and allow society to be secular rather than forcing their beliefs onto others via law then people would not be so angry.

Dont believe “Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. As a general concept masculinity is defined by a sense of control and dominance, whereas femininity would be surrendering control and subservience. Not being able to accept that there is something that is unknowable, and being unable to ignore to the challenge of finding the meaning of life would then be masculine. More social theory than feminist theory. I think even redpill folks would agree with that.

I think the episode that shows their views on religion the best is the episode All About Mormons. They both make fun of and shed light to the religion. they make fun of the beliefs but show the family as very friendly, wholesome people. It's at the very end of the episode that is a big reason to why i respect SP. They have Stan not want to hang out with the Mormon kid and the Mormon kid finally tells him that they obviously can't be friends anymore because Stan can't get past that he's a Mormon and the Mormon kid says this " Look, maybe us Mormons do believe in crazy stories that make absolutely no sense, and maybe Joseph Smith did make it all up, but I have a great life and a great family, and I have the Book of Mormon to thank for that. The truth is, I don't care if Joseph Smith made it all up, because what the church teaches now is loving your family, being nice and helping people. And even though people in this town might think that's stupid, I still choose to believe in it. All I ever did was try to be your friend, Stan, but you're so high mighty that you couldn't look past my religion and just be my friend back. You've got a lot of growing up to do, buddy. Suck my balls." The episode didn't turn all religious people into nut jobs who just want to be assholes while still making fun of Mormon belief at the same time. Now that is hard to do. if any show that is about making fun of everything can make their work into a non biased thing, that is something to respect honestly. Trey and Matt aren't atheists either. i think Matt said he's agnostic and Trey said there has to be something going on that we don't understand, but he doesn't believe in any religion we've made on earth. He just believes there has to be something big out there but that it shouldn't be something we should fight over. Those are very good outlooks on the world really.

Margareth Wertheim sounds, based on this video, like she is conflating science with the colloquial misapprehension of what science is. I haven't read the book, so I don't know. What I do know is that science is not about knowing absolute truth, nor to explain without evidence. It's just methodological naturalism.
@RogueBoyScout5 жыл бұрын
A great example of this is the word "Theory". The scientific meaning and common idea of the definition is very different. What a lot of people think of Theory, is actually Hypothesis. And the misinterpretation in the media has caused serious problems. Just my opinion.

just sayin'. there is no evidence for the claims that those that use science in their atheistic (or theistic) benefit. science observes phenomena and puts it in context, in relationship to other phenomena. science is far-cry from actualy even comin' close to explainin' existence. in most cases it does not even try. it is just that new atheism uses current lack of understanding in science to claim the existence for their lord, the no-god. same way as theists use some of scientific principles in claiming the existence of their lord the god (what ever the god word actualy meant.). science is by its nature (or should be) neutral on the whole position. and wise scientist on question "does the god exits" say "i dunno, could u first define what u mean by god". the whole theist, atheist thing is just bunch of gibberish. all be it that the atheism is nowadays more aggressive in the west. imposing its self as authority. either u are atheist or u are not well in ur head.

Many people say atheism is not a belief but the lack of belief. But this is Agnosticism. Atheism is not only the lack of belief in religion but also the belief that religion gets it wrong » Therefore it is a belief, it may be a true belief - But the point is that it is not only lack of belief, but actually a belief. From the logic of an atheist, if there are no assuring evidence of a belief - you shouldn't believe it » Therefore you shouldn't believe that religion is wrong. What I am saying is that Atheism is self-canceling. Agnosticism is the true "belief" that follows the logic Atheists claim they follow.
@airman1224698 жыл бұрын
False. Atheism literally means "no faith". Agnostic means "no knowledge". Theism and gnosticism are two different things. Theism has to do with belief, gnosticism has to do with knowledge. You can be an agnostic atheist, agnostic theist, gnostic atheist, or a gnostic theist.

+Brother Bear But they're not though. Taking Christianity for example, the bible doesn't mention or care bout how the world was brought into being except in the most basic description possible in Genesis. Excluding the arrival of mankind and the first sin, the creation story goes: God: Yo Moses, I'm gonna show you how I made the world. Moses: Alright, bet. I've got a charred stick and some parchment, spit. Insert what was likely the most disorienting vision of reality coming into existence to ever exist for a man who probably didn't really know what gravity was. Moses: Holy, shit. Lemme write that down. God: Did you get it all? Moses: Yup. 7 days right? You made a big ass light, then there was some stars, then Earth was there, but it was covered in water, so you made dirt and the sky, and you made plants, and animals and bugs, and then you made some naked dude and some naked chick, and then you took a nap. God: ... Pretty much. If you've seen a sped up video of an artist drawing, imagine that but on a cosmic scale, and you've got what Moses saw. Science, as far as Christianity is concerned, is just slowing down the video and explaining what the fuck actually happened. Now tell me how that contradicts Christianity.

Like I think God exists. But everyone has their own reason to live. All of which trick us into instinctively living on to reproduce and naturally continue the cycle of life. And we always find the answer we're looking for. I don't seek purpose, and I don't think I need anything more to achieve happiness, I just need to change my state of mind. Everything begins and ends and the best reason it has to have ever existed was for the sake of experiencing it. Many people take heaven and hell as a literal thing so most will do good just to be rewarded in the end, which in a way is pretty selfish. I think heaven is a metaphor for you to reflect on all the people you've impacted positively and hell is the opposite.

I believe evolution is real, I believe that it founded the laws of the universe before the Big Bang started. It may sound boring or whatever, but the point of my philosophy is that, not everything has to make sense, and you just do what you do for the pleasure of experiencing it or out of curiosity. All of our feelings and desires are instinctive to our species, and that's perfectly fine. I try to find happiness in what I already have, but you can never find happiness without processing grief, sadness or anger. And to me, that makes the most sense.

Muslims love him so much that Caliph and Sultan Abdulhamid the II nearly waged war with France because of a play that mocked him. And honestly it was very bad ass, this is not to promote censorship but to hope that people knows about why Muslims are soo offended when this kind of stuff happens

I am an agnostic that used to be Christian. I currently hold no negative feelings for Christianity. My family is very christian and while they don’t know of my personal views I know that they will not support my views. I feel the main issue is that humans can not accept another view contrary to their own and this is one of the driving factors of modern Christianity.

Except scientists do have evidence and when confronted with new evidence they modify their views.

you say that, but yet look at the anti vaccer's or the old doctor's who would kill a man for saying that their dirty hand's were harming their patient's. the amount of people who refuse to believe or consider new evidence is vast, especially in the modern day, where someone will take one bit of evidence and stand by it regardless of if all other evidence goes against it. Like those who don't believe in the holocaust, they will look for what they want to find, and ignore all else. further evidence show's that any confrontation with the person's view's or ideal's will make them even more against changing side's. For example if you don't believe anything I just wrote you probably are more against my opinion then you were prior to having read this comment.

Do you really believe that? Scientists are people,too. They have bias and disbelief in things they want to not be true.
@akba6668 жыл бұрын
Curious Wendigo Obviously scientists will have bias. But if they are wrong, at some point the evidence will be so overwhelming they simply can't ignore it. Whereas in religion, people will just believe based on faith alone and praise others for taking faith over evidence.

+Stacey Stakeley I think that comes later, around episode 8, but that episode is great, too.

Alexandre Oliveira Arrais as long as children aren’t indoctrinated, I’m fine with religion. Childhood indoctrination is a guaranteed way for religions to keep on going as kids are told that adults are people they should trust, plus their young impressionable minds won’t question anything they hear.
