Very well put together! Many years ago we did a trip from Oxford to Inverness in our trusty Volvo Estate running on LPG and people would sometimes comment about LPG "but where is it? I never see it". They never see it because it's not in their mindset because most people seem to work on a just in time refueling strategy. We just looked ahead and planned where to stop to refuel with LPG. A work colleague once laughed and said "LPG wouldn't be any use for me, there's none near me", then the next day I presented him with two refueling options along his daily commute but because they weren't in his direct line of sight, he had no knowledge of. Same with EV's you plan differently, you don't plan to stop and wait while charging, it becomes something that happens while you're doing something else (where possible). The Daily Mail readers usually write something like "and what happens when you run out of battery, then what?!". To which I point out that it's pretty easy to find an electric charge point anywhere, just find a house, they use a similar type of electricity ;) However, try asking just any homeowner if they can help with a gallon of diesel. (Yes, you may have to knock on a few doors to find someone who will let you pay them over the odds but it's an option).

Great video a truly realistically honest real range test. I own a Jaguar I pace SE and have travelled all over England. Generally speaking I haven't had many problems charging enroute,I normally use either Gridserve or Podpoint,as yet I haven't used my BP pulse charge card which I got with the I Pace.

An excellent, excellent video! Very informative for someone like me who is flirting with the idea of going fully electric. Plus a reminder of how stunning Scotland is. You should really do a guest slot on Autogefühl as a UK correspondent or guest vlog an episode of The Fully Charged Show. I'm sure their viewers would appreciate your in-depth reviews.

same here, I also use the ABRP app to estimate after the fact how it would have turned out if I had an EV instead of a 2011 Lexus hybrid (full hybrid - not rechargeable)

if you are a couple of years away then get the i3 with the back up motor which is a great transitional vehicle as long as your normal winter commute is 100 miles or less. It will go much further if you like a long journey every now and then but I wouldn’t use it like that daily. It’s so satisfying to leave almost anything at the lights and it goes around corners well once you get used to the feel and realise the batteries stop you from toppling 😂

Great trip review. Makes me not want to get an EV for longer driving outside of the city/surroundings. 205 GBP is a lot and only going up and the half day of charging ain't exactly great either. I get that here and there you need to stop anyway, there is a difference between stopping when and how long you want and stopping when you have to.

I’ve been running an I-PACE for three years and have been very pleased with it. Pleased enough to have just bought another one. As it was my first EV, I’ve kept a log of my journeys and charge history. I’ve written a few articles on my blog about my ownership experience and my longer trips. Nothing quite as epic as yours though. Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 at its fabulous best. Let me know if you’d like to compare notes. My long term efficiency average is 2.7, but that’s on 20” rims. My new one is on 22” rims and it will be interesting to see what an efficiency hit I take for those. Another difference is that it is on air suspension. Direct comparison is difficult because of the wheels, but it feels a bit plusher and a bit flatter. The steel setup was very good already with a fine compromise of ride and handling - very Jaguar in fact.

Hi Martin, Great video really enjoyed the pace! And the iPace... I totally agree with you that we need to concentrate on increasing destination chargers (or even simple 3-pin sockets) as they would make travelling around a joy. Also like you said, you will get a better return on the charging infrastructure investment going in that direction. I'm my case I can charge at home 99% of the time and rarely use a rapid charger but when staying away I try to get a place with charging facilities.

This is a great video. I like your method of only charging at the highest charge rate, ie. not waiting for the 100% charge at the slower rate. Considering an I-Pace for our next car, this video is really helpful.

Great scenery , hope the charging hassle didn't detract to much from the otherwise perfect trip...I have a bmw i3 rex i love electric cars but would never play hunt charger or plan my trip so on a long trip i just pop some petrol in and stop where i want rather than the car telling me where to stop..... Home charging is perfect and cheap public charging is hassle and expensive.

Really enjoying your videos and you’re informative content. Really nicely done. I do see how an EV make sense and your videos are helping me move that way. One question though given your experience with Tesla and non-Tesla cars; biggest pro for Tesla seems the infrastructure and biggest pro for others is build quality and enjoyment. How then do Jaguar (or BMW in my case) cars do in the real world v Tesla for european trips? How about a Tesla MY and a long distance car such as BMW iX or Jaguar iPace head to head? Cheers Steve

Really good video Martin and very interesting statistics. An average of 2.8 miles per Kwh does not seem very efficient although I appreciate the I-Pace is a heavy car. What would you have expected from a Tesla M3 or MS? I note that your average speed was 42mph but did you have to restrict your speed (below 70 mph) on motorways and trunk roads to avoid draining the batteries too quickly or is the Jaguar (unlike the i3) reasonably aerodynamic? Your video definitely highlights the need to keep to reliable networks and sites where there is a hub of chargers. Did you feel you had to make more stops than you would have ideally chosen because of the Jaguar’s somewhat limited range? The range seems a little on the low side for a GT car that is capable of gobbling up more miles before the driver needs or is ready for a break. Not a journey to repeat in a Kangoo!

If you had a PHEV already you definitely have more experience with charging than majority of drivers in the UK, but what's right is only up to you, depending on your usage profile. We would say that with how far full EVs have come, there is less of a need for plug-in hybrids than ever...

For sure, my 2007 Volvo V70 D5 would indeed do at least 54 mpg, and weighing about a tonne less than the ipace has only slightly less hp per tonne. I live in the Scottish Highlands, and do most of my driving here, and I have never needed AWD. Ever. And a slightly rough-looking car park in one of your scenic stops? Ford Fiestas and cars like mine are just plain normal to see in such places. And with 0-60 pace of 7 seconds, I too can accelerate out of turnings with only short sight-lines. My car is like your favourite armchair to sit in, and munches miles for fun. Last point on such a trip - I would have filled up in London, then again in Inverness, and that's it. With at least 800 miles per tank, and about ten minutes to fill and pay, the only stops I'd have made would have been purely at my leisure. And TWENTY EIGHT HOURS of charging time?! That's a day of your life you will never get back. Did you say just how many stops you made in all. Ten-ish? Thats about seven too many, even compared to an ICE car that will only do 350 miles per tank. And what was the source of the electricity you used at any of your way-too-many stops for juice? Of course, about 50% fossil gas, and with more than a hint of coal in the mix too, and maybe 5-10% of renewables plus a bit of nuclear. Great, well done. Last point: the best thing anyone can do for the planet is to use their current car, almost regardless of age, maintain it well, and 'drive it into the ground' as it were. If only people would stop 'buying' cars on 3 year PCPs! This creates unnecessary markets for ex-PCP cars, which adds to the market for new cars. Buy a car because you like it, drive it well, and drive it for economy, and fix it if anything breaks (even EVs break things. They have steering, suspension, brakes, and many systems an ICE car does not. It is a false supposition that EVs need less servicing than ICE cars because they don't have a piston motor. My engine, and thus car, will run for 400,000 miles - will that Jag?). Then keep it! If it was a nice car when new, it will always be a nice car! When all the Watts an EV uses are produced from fairy dust, then the EV community can gloat. Just saying.

Not bad considering this is one of the worst EV’s on the market for efficiency. Most will average over 3.0 to 4.0 miles per kWh even in winter. Great video and love all your honest and in depth calculations.

Nice video. Thank you. It shows why nobody should use an EV for this type of trip. Forever recharging with very few miles in-between due to the poor range (driving from charging station to charging station to charging station to charging station is not my idea of driving) , and all those apps, charging problems and constantly checking where to charge up next. I could have done that trip in my diesel car with a single 5-minute fill up each way, far less stops (and less food/drink purchases to waste time while charging yet again) and could have had several more hours each day just to admire the scenery. This is not the future. I am sure a better technology will come along soon to replace the temporary EV battery technology.

You are cheating - you cannot ignore the fact that there were no chargers for you Glasgow - a diesel car would not have the same issue. As for the fuel cost - my diesel would have used 65Lts for this journey - this is about £97 - less than half of your cost.
@connormorrice7523

1355 miles using 65 litres of diesel is 94mpg. Let us know your secret as I’ve got a diesel and the max I can get is 60mpg, and that would be driving at 60mph on a motorway all day. Also, you can home charge an electric car at home overnight for around 8p/kWh, which is way cheaper per mile than any petrol. In the video he happened to use rapid charge which cost more, just like motorway diesel.

I am waiting for my pace to arrive. To use all different types of chargers do I need different cards or apps on my phone? Thanks a lot
@wiselyauto
@wiselyauto Жыл бұрын
The short answer is that you do not, especially if we are talking about rapid chargers. The vast majority of those now support contactless card payments. We just like to use the apps to get VAT receipts, see live availability, etc. The only app to get familiar with is called Zap-Map, which shows stations from all operators in the UK in one place. Would recommend watching the following video which should hopefully make everything a bit clearer with regards to travelling long distances in an EV: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnKcYZisgsRgp5I
