I've been practicing for 37 years. All of the tools I thought I needed have fallen away. The magic is all inside you. Your index finger supercedes a wand. The freezer mug full of Dr Pepper is as magical as wine in a chalice. My herbs come inside a BLT sandwich. Crystals? That pretty rock out in the driveway. Candles? The cheapest white dinner variety. Nag Champa incense is much more pleasant than white sage. My cauldron is microwave safe. I kept my BOS on the laptop. I designed my own font. Now I can't read it. I do have an altar, and the figures are statues of Medusa and Pan. Suits my mental state better. And forget divination. You don't really want to know. Relax. You know yourself, don't you?

1. My chalice, since I'm 14, is a old porcelain teacup, because I can't find a chalice in the house. 2. I don't have a broomstick yet. 3. My athame is just a little barn knife, which is just a tiny right angle blade, because that's what I have access to. 4. My wand is just a chopstick (don't judge me) 5. The closest to ritual clothes is just a bed robe. (Don't judge me) 6. Divination tools is my box of different tarot cards from different artest. 7. Crystals the only crystals I have is on my necklace, and a bunch of rings have turquoise, my favorite stone, even though I was born in June. 8. My cauldron is literally a plastic cauldron shaped candy pot for Halloween. But It's what I have. 9. Book of Shadows I made mine out of 4 composition notebooks taped together and with cardboard and I painted it. I put book of shadows in Latin on the cover and a deadly nightshade just cause, I was bored. For mine, I just write down spells, herbs, potions, moon phases and astrology, and ect. (Sorry it's so long)

I have loved rocks all my life. I would always pick up a special rock in a field, a parking lot, the playground…. So now as an old woman I love going to gem, crystal and mineral shops and shows to see “who” wants to come home with me. I learn their attributes and carry them with me to enhance my confidence, protect from negativity and so on.

Me too. I was walking on a path at a, park,by roaring river.it had been covered in gravel,a stone stood out due to the colour and shape.,,.it looked and felt like a worry stone, worn in all the areas one would think one would.it was dark, smooth, with a white calm like indent in it. One day I had it outside in brightest and realized it was not an ordinary dent, and used my magnifying glass and discovered it was actualyvthe fossil of a shell, scallop,I think. I have always had an affinity for water so for me it is perfect.,. It definatly helps with my anxiety 😊

When I was a beginner witch, I was heavily influenced into buying incense because everyone I saw hyped it up as a great cleansing method. I bought quite a bit of it, but when I used it, I realized that not only do I have asthma, but I also own pets. This isn’t the case for everyone, and I do still quite enjoy using incense when I need a really deep cleanse (I open the windows to let the smoke out of the room), but I highly recommend that you do your research on several ways to use the object/tool you want so you don’t get stuck with a ton of something you don’t use. Also, I should mention that I am a closeted witch myself, so I can’t buy much anyway. I’ve had to get creative with what materials I have and what I know I can get away with buying. (I’ve always been a collector of crystals, so that’s something I can easily buy without suspicion.)

If you do, buy as little of an item as you can! I bought a lot of incense when I was first starting because everyone hyped it up as a great smoke cleansing method, but then realized I have asthma and pets, so smoke is not a great option for me. I’d also see what you already have and can make. I was able to make wands from sticks in my backyard and some clear quartz I already owned. I’d also recommend making a list of things you want, then leaving it for a week and coming back. It’ll prevent you from making impulse purchases and you can see what things your mind was naturally drawn to over the week you didn’t touch the list. Idk how long you have been researching/practicing, but I’m happy to help if you have questions! I’ve been practicing almost two years now.

I love the other commenter’s idea about making a list and setting it aside for a time. In addition, I would recommend you do a short visioning of what you want, and then explore some thrift stores. I have found some amazing items to use in thrift stores. I have also found it to be the case that the tools I use the most in my practice are often the ones I have made myself or found in thrift stores or nature over the years, and not so much the pricey ones. It is nice to get a beautiful piece new, but the ones we make or find ourselves often are imbued with our energy on a deeper level, and this can be more powerful for our practice and workings. Wishing you the best on your journey!

And yet, I had never touched incense to begin with at the start of my own journey, though I have always liked incense in the past simply for the fragrance well before I began a practice or even had begun to considered a magical belief system. But now, because I have found my way over to Heathenistic Reconstructionist Norse Paganism and not so much witchcraft anymore, my practice has become quite minimalistic in nature. I do have an altar, but there are no statues or anything like that though there's no reason I couldn't have those things if I felt like wanting them or if I felt they were needed, instead just an incense holder and some incense. What I offer here is a glimpse into a minimalist practice so you can see through the veil that's often pulled over the eyes of many new tradition seekers so they can't see the truth of how simple a practice and belief system can be if they feel it's needed or wanted. And to also give a glimpse into some of the different worldviews. I don't cast circles or lay compasses like I used to do as when I did when I once thought I was a witch, no cauldrons, no atheme or sword, no crystals, no chalices or goblets, and etc. And also I'm not dualistic or soft polytheist or perennialist as most witches and most modern pagans are, but rather instead, I'm a hard polytheist. I'm also an animist rather than a pantheist which most people often confuse or conflate one with the other because they have similarities in their core philosophical beliefs but they mean entirely different things by them when making such statements; for example, animism doesn't collapse into an overarching All (i.e. source) whereas pantheism does and so does soft polytheism and perennialism, and also animism states "One is one, but within the all" meaning that everything is alive of its own accord and clearly distinct from one another but are still interconnected from one thing to the next through energy transfer from one thing to another but not originating from an overarching "source", whereas pantheism is the one that states "One is all, and all is one" meaning that everything is interconnected through energy that permeates out from an overarching "source" and whether something like a rock is alive is up for debate from pantheist to pantheist. I have thought about some statues to represent my gods and goddesses on my altar, but then again, I like the minimalist look and feel to my altar and somehow it just doesn't feel right to do anything more to it or at least not rate now it doesn't. I have thought about using a candle but I'm not quite sure yet, and as far as something to record my practices and jot my thoughts down on my beliefs and so one and so forth, I use a simple black marble composition journal. Though, I do use prayer in my practice and they come in two forms (i.e. set and spontaneous; a set prayer is one that's composed and prepared ahead of time with a specific structure to it and thought out, while a spontaneous prayer is one that's done on the spot without prior thought put into it ahead of time and is a little more free form, and both are just as viable as the other; the general rule to follow is that if you have the time to compose and prepare a prayer ahead of time you should do so out of simple respect, however this is not always true, because sometimes you may not have previously thought about praying and also sometimes you may not have the time to do so especially in cases where you may not have much time to get much out except for two or three words at most), which is highly versatile and can be used for many different things anywhere from petition, to offering, to as a gift, to cleansing, to consecration (i.e. dedicated as sacred to something else), to blessing (i.e. dedicated as sacred in of itself), to thanks, to praise, to veneration, to honoring, to worship, and to simply begin fostering a relationship with some other entity, and to anyone or to anything that you feel like working with; and prayer can be found in many belief systems and practices all throughout the world. And many of the things mentioned here when placed into a paganism context in general, are used in different ways in most cases, as compared to the way a witchcraft tradition would use them; though something like incense, can still be used for something like cleansing and those sort of things, but are generally used overall for either offering to use however they like for whoever or whatever you're giving the offering to or instead used in what is generally called "feeding the gods" or "feeding the ancestors" or etc. within paganism. As anyone can clearly see, my belief system and practice over the years, went into an entirely different direction than I or anyone else could have ever predicted in the beginning. And my point is this which is a lesson to all who may read this. In the beginning you may feel strongly that you're a witch or a shaman or whatever else. But in the end, you will find, your journey is going to do a complete one-eighty and you will end up where you never expected to be at. So remain open rather than resistant to the traditions and paths and possibilities that are available to you. P.S. For anyone who may be interested in Norse Paganism by my mentioning of it I give a word of caution. Stay well clear of Odinism, American Folk Assembly, and American Asatru. The reasons are obvious because they draw their beliefs off of the corruptions that the Nazis poured into many religions to justify their worldview.

Great video and loving this community. My favorite item (at the moment) is a small saucer I found at a thrift store. I think it found me actually… It’s made with mosaic glass in amber and black. I placed it on my alter in the center/back to use as an offering plate. When I’m outside in nature and I find an earth treasure, or am celebrating a holiday (Lammas right now) I will make offerings to keep the energy fresh in this space. Right now there are wheat kernels, acorns, sunflower petals. I add a crystal and refresh it daily with new offerings from my journey. After a week or two, I will pull the crystals and scatter the rest off my porch with the intention of gratitude and fulfillment. Sorry, long story!

When it came to wands specifically for me, I went the route of if I was meant to have one it will come to me. As my practice evolved and developed, alot of my practice revolves around Trees and what I've found is they eventually gift wands and wood to practitioners. I got a bunch of Birch that I work with my ancestors and even made a besom from what was gifted. That became more rewarding than just buying tools. Because of that experience my craft has become quite simple in comparison to what it once was. I like making my own tools if I need them, but I also like a more simpler, 'primal' Craft that looks to nature first for tools and inspiration.

I was in a alexandrian wiccan based coven for many years and now I study as a solitary practitioner and I was going over my ritual and magical items three days ago and I found things that haven't used in so long. I remember slowly acquiring tools. I still have my original glass chalice from a flea market, a cast iron cauldron and besom from junk shop, and brass candle holders from a yard sale. ❤

i started making tools i really wanted and then buying a fancy version if i did find I liked ysing them. I make my own pendulums and have never bought one, tarot i bought because i knew from the start i would, but now I am creating a few of my own sets. i have made two besoms, the full size has been taken apart and is getting a revamp currently, the smaller one is an alter peice when it isn't in use. I still need to get more bristles for the big one. my ritual knife is a letter opener from a few Christmases ago, or a pair of safety scizzors for my travel alter. i alos use a mortar and pestel and i like the grinding of ingredients. it's easier for me to get into the 'right headspace'. also the first wand i made that wasn't a harry potter prop was destroyed. It wasn't done when my aunt's dog chewed it up. it was so pretty 😭 i do plan to get a cauldron eventually but for now i'm using whatever fireproof bowl i can get my hands on (a bucket for a bit lol)

I make a lot of my tools now, I found a stick I use as a wand with a quartz point tied to the top with jute string. My cauldron is a baked cheese dish my mum got one Christmas and I nicked it 😂 it’s about 20 years old now! I am however totally obsessed with tarot and oracle decks! But I do alot of readings for others, so that’s how I excuse that obsession. I have a scrap book from the works as my current book of shadows, i think it was about £3 I stick stuff into it and leave a blank page for results/updates. The practice I see online always looks super pretty, mine is a mess of herbs and candle wax drips everywhere 😂😂😂 but it works for me and I love it ❤❤❤

Personally ,i always make my own wands,i have two maple trees at end of my garden, which i have spiritual spiritual connection to, they help in all spells, and offer protection, in turn i have obtained application for protection order on them so they can never be removed or cut down, i sat under these trees and did a fae connection medititation, and a small branch fell from the tree whilst i was doing this..almost into my lap,i made my wand from this gift the tree gave me, ..the tip is a small spiral shell ,,i carve my candles with my wand tip always. and cast circles with it. this video was really good advice ,thank you Hearth.

I feel like in witchcraft it’s really easy to end up buying something just so you can use a tool for something that doesn’t require it. Like sure you can use an athame or wand to direct energy, but if your hands work fine, you don’t really need those tools unless you feel a strong pull from your intuition or it’s an important part of your tradition. When you begin it’s easy to feel like you need a bunch of tools in order to feel like a real witch, and most of the time you’ll end up casting half of those aside or never using them. I lost my OG collection of witch supplies in a house fire in 2021, and since I’ve had to rebuild my collection with limited funds, I have to plan out my purchases more and only buy stuff I actually have a plan for. And it feels so much better; I feel less wasteful, I have more space, I feel more like an “actual” witch doing this than when I had a bunch of stuff that meant little to me. I feel like I actually have my own practice based on my intuition, because all the witchy things I own are tailored to my practice. (though I don’t use wands and have never been a big fan for my own practice, it was very sad for me to lose the wand my god father hand carved for me when I turned 11. Some pieces are just sentimental and that’s okay too:))

I set my kitchen altar up with stuff I had around; soapstone pentagram coaster, my late MiL's peeling knife, a Stir Up Sunday wooden spoon (wand!) and two lovely metal goblets given to us for a wedding present; I've also used a wine glass for a chalice. Tarot decks on the other hand - a whole other rabbit hole of must-buys! Have a load of decks just because I loved collecting them; but I almost always use the RWS for daily readings. Nice to have those decks but really, you only need one that works for you.

Super-baby witch, here. First off, thank you for your videos -- you have been a huge and positive influence on me. I did buy a few 'starter' items -- I've always loved tarot, so I've acquired three decks, and two oracle decks, and I use them all. I bought a cauldron (cast iron) that I've used a few times, and some crystals that felt right to me -- my favourite is a quartz in the shape of a crescent moon that I touch daily. I have sage from an Indigenous grower, and some cedar and palo santo. I have a wee besom that I use to 'clean' my space, and I bought some inexpensive coloured candles for future spells. Other than that, I have other candles for mood. I don't feel any need for a wand (for me!! no judgement) right now. I *definitely* need to start writing things down. I did set some water out a few weeks ago; here in Ontario, we had a solar eclipse, and I was lucky enough that my backyard was in an area of 99.61% totality. I don't know what I'll use that water for, but it's super special, and I'll never have the chance again, so I made sure I used the opportunity to gather it. Side note: it's easy to get the rust off cast iron! Scrub the rust off with some steel wool, until it's all gone. Then coat the whole cauldron lightly in vegetable oil, and put it in an oven (on a cookie sheet in case of any drips) at 200 degrees F, and leave it for an hour or so. Let it cool, wipe off any excess oil, and it's good to go. Sorry this was sooooo long!

I just started my spiritual journey this year, which, for me, includes witchcraft. Me and my therapist are pretty sure I have ADHD, and so, at least in my case, I kind of go all in right from the beginning, which isn’t great at all for the wallet, but I did at least already have a few things that I use now in my practice: I made a wand, a wooden athame, I had some Shabbat candles, a candle holder or two, sealing wax and a seal, a shit ton of empty notebooks, and hourglass, a chunk of quartz my friend gave me. I got into tarot and oracle decks and crystals right away, and for me, the thing I feel like I couldn’t do without is my 4” selenite bowl. I love being able to cleanse and charge not only crystals, but so many other things, like my pentacle necklace, for example. Thanks for this video!

I have two chalices, ceramic and metal. The ceramic is my fav cuz my husband bought for me and it’s not witchy looking at all, but I love it. My practice has changed so much over time, and so has the way I use tools. I agree with you about the journal/grimoire/book of shadows. I’ve had many over the years and they are probably the thing most important to me in my practice. I loved this video bc it addresses something beginners need to know. Lovely, interesting video, as always Hearth. Funnily enough, just before I started my practice some 20 plus years ago, I saw a tv programme about the more traditional folk magicians, and most of them used some fabulous everyday spells with everyday things found in the kitchen. So, what I did was use a small black handled paring knife for an athame (I started using Wiccan inspired rituals as a solitary), a beautiful glass stemmed bowl for a chalice (from my collection of coloured moulded glassware) and a tiny glass dish to hold salt with another larger dish for home-made biccies. So I haven't really bought anything new for it at all, apart from some items for specific spellwork, such as ribbon, herbs, etc. A funny story about that: there was one spell that took several days to set up, which among other things called for a newt, lol. I obviously wanted to exchange something for the real thing so I had a wander around town to see if I could get buy child's toy or something similar. Then, lo and behold, I saw exactly what I wanted on the ground...a perfect tiny green lizard/newt model. It was also the best spell I ever did. ✨✨✨✨✨

I made my own charm reading set & a bone reading set for divination. The charms are each fairly small & most of them are silver colored, so they can be a bit difficult to read without moving the pieces to see what landed where. My bone reading set has a lot of different colors & each piece is very distinctive. Many of the pieces are not made of bone, but I do have a few pieces of bone included. Some carved antler & shells, too.

My only cauldron is cauldron-shaped mug ^^ I have many wands - all made from found sticks My first deck of Tarot was used to death - it literally fell apart. Now I have one private one and one shared with partner (it's weird, I know, but this deck just want it that way). I rehomed two that wasn't good with me. But also I don't use it for divination that often - I prefer magpie oracle, or I-Ching, or I just use labradorite or obsidian to scry. I think to get set of runes - I may not use them often and probably never use them to do divination, but in workings they proove to be helpful. My book of shadows... I have five paper ones and one digital. Two are written cover to cover and... I have no idea where they are since we moved :(. Most of them is luckily copied to digital one. Two are started, absolute mess made of ordinary notebooks, that are already shedding pages and begging to end their misery. And there's one nice one, where these two would be copied once I end with them. As for brooms/besoms I have three miniature ones that are cute and sometimes used to cleanse something from lingering energy, but rarely. They are more of decorative pieces. For crystals - I'm magpie, I have way too many. I see shiny rock and can't help myself... Pendulums... let's not start with those. Way, way too many. Here they are... fashionable somehow? I mean they are sold in every jewelery store, even in cheap jewelery departments of chemist's and supermarkets. And I'm magpie. Way too many pendulums

I have a wand from an old, old oak tree that grew in my childhood home's backyard--I was out back one day when I was 11 or 12 and saw this branch that just....felt like I needed to pick it up. Had it 20+ years now, and I've moved from that house since, and that branch/wand is like carrying an old friend. Oddly, though, I never use it--wandwork has never made sense to me and just doesn't feel right to my practice, but I wouldn't give up that piece of my history for anything. Maybe I'll find another use for it. Like your tree runes, maybe it was always meant to lead me into working with tree spirits or something--it definitely has a particular and comforting energy to this day whenever I hold it.

Ive been practicing witchcraft for almost a year now and my most used tool so far was my hand fan i got from a dollar store. (It has since fallen apart) but my practice became very influenced by the element of air. Because i am a fire sign and air feeds fire. So i would use the fan to fan myself during any workings and divination and it made me feel "powered up" in a way. I feel like the fan falling apart was a sign that i needed to upgrade to a better fan made out of more natural materials and im taking my time in finding the perfect one. If anyone has any ideas for sellers pls let me know! But i found that your best tools are often the most unexpected ones that just come to you one day and then they make sense.

I'm actually really glad you made this video because I've been a witch since 17 n im 41 now n so much has changed. When I started I remember I was so happy to have two books that I found online from the school of Wicca in West Virginia. That to me was huge because we had dial up n laggy computers then. I also didn't know wicca was different than just being a witch. Years later when I discovered witches on KZbin n I was in a low spot in my life I bought a lot witch tools it many gave me a temporary high I call it. However now I have so much on my shelves sometimes I get overwhelmed practicing at all. I want to do more but I got a lot of purging to do. I even signed up for two witch subscription boxes when I was late 30s. I thought it would help keep my spirits up to wanting to practice more but I don't always connect with the spells n items. Same goes with recommended books. I guess I struggled with mine alot because I hated feeling like I had to do certain things to be called a witch. I learned much later about being an eclectic witch n the idea really resonated with me because I felt a sense of freedom. I spent so much on my items over the years I even feel guilty for getting rid of them but like a poison I feel like it's killing me inside to keep. Closer to strangling vines. I think I'm gonna offer stuff to my sister's to help. I wish I had this video years ago. I think my favorite is this one book I had all these years that I believe is a bunch of magazines from the school of Wicca which really opened my eyes to things I believed in and never knew the name of. I had friends in school that claimed to be witches n I did too. It took years from a lack of info online before I knew the difference between Wicca n witchcraft and I'm not at all into wiccan n will never claim that now. But I did grow up a strict christian n online in the witchcraft community I finally felt like there was a community I belonged with that thought n felt like me. That to me is the best about this community. I just wish early on I didn't listen to the pushy practitioners because I would have saved tons of money n time not to mention guilt. Thank you for this...

@@tcconnection you use a high smoke point oil, like olive oil, cover you pan in it, whipping it down with a paper towel so the oil doesn't pool. Then you throw it in your oven for a few hours. I would look up more precise guides than this. But it does work and makes your pan non-stick. I do it to my bread pan, and it works great.

I mean it depends. I use a lot of tools, but i don't buy most tools from witchy stores. So i found my wand at stone fort here in tn. For those that don't know, stone fort is a place where native Americans celebrated the summer soltice over a thousand years ago. My wand is a beautiful stick i found, ok i was told to look down as i was walking with my husband and this stick was right in front of me. I took it home and sanded it and finished it in furniture polish. Same with my staff. It is another found piece. My besom is just a $6 cinnamon broom that i use for house cleansing. My cauldron was purchased for really cheap at an antique store. It's very old and has very old energy from the people who used it in the past. I use it to burn things for safety reasons. My chalices are brass antiques and i use them for offering wine to deities. I also have an antique incense burner i picked up and i use this a lot. I dont have an athame, but i have a cool antique knife i use for cutting herbs for rituals. It has celtic carvings on it. I also don't use cloaks because i practice naked so yeah. Basically, i have a lot of tools i use, but they are either natural things i found, or they are things i purchased at an antique store. Honestly, im not a huge fan of metaphysical stores because it's all the same mass-produced crap. But things found in antique stores have a history, are generally cheaper, and have way more power behind them. I even buy my candles at hobby lobby because my workings always go well with hobby lobby candles.

I bought my wand VERY early in my practice and I LOVE it, if I go to open rituals I bring it with me, I sleep with it under my pillow, it gets used & therefore was a good purchase. I haven’t purchased or made a besom (I use dusters and vacuum cleaners and because I live in a small flat I can’t justify buying something like that that will take up space). I too follow Wiccan practice so I thought I needed all the alter ‘bits’ and bought a metal chalice, cauldron, athame and boleen. I use the chalice for its intended purpose, I burn incense or candles in the cauldron because I have cats & I worry they will knock candles over & cause a fire. Unfortunately I’ve never used my athame or boleen, I wouldn’t dare take them out of the house in case people get the wrong idea, so I regret buying them. ✨✨✨

@HearthWitch You mentioned about your purple velvet cloak and that you need to shorten it. May I suggest something? But it will need attention when washing. You will do two folds. Around the bottom lining, use clip on stud sets, like clip buttons that you see on shirts. Yes, you may need to buy a small press for pressing them in to the fabric too. In the 1st fold, sew some open pockets, so only the sides, since the bottom is from the fabric. You can also use 3cm to 5 cm long zips. This creates little pouches / pockets. In these, you can put crystals for protection, enhancing your spells etc. In the second fold, is where you can put herbs inside, again for the same reasons, but, can also be used as extra pockets too, or if you find something in the forest. Use a small vial if you wish, so as not to be getting soil in there. The upside is, is that there will also be some weight to it, of which will assist in keeping it down even in small winds.
