Nah, this was related to the Catriona plague which has been in all 3 games and started at the very end of the Witcher books due to Ciri accidentally bringing the Bubonic plague from our world into the Witcher’s world as she fled the Wild Hunt. The devil’s pit repurposed the original intention and created a new plague that happened in Velen in the 10th century, but the plot was relatively the same just replacing Martin the Nilfgaardian medic with Reinald the Witcher. The Red Miasmal doesn’t spread plague like the plague maiden, instead it feeds off the collective torment of plague victims, which is why it would’ve existed in both versions (probably possessed Martin in the original version). That would also explain the lumps on its body, as that would be similar to the bubonic plague which catriona is.

Every king has mages, so a combustion-damping spell would be a top priority for any state facing cannonfire. If damping works better than anti-damping, then gunpowder wouldn't be practical in war, and would quickly fade to a lab curiosity. Alternately, some bit of chemistry might be off in a magic-filled world, sort of like how Harry Dresden interferes with advanced tech, whether he wants to or not. The mage guilds might even have conspired to suppress gunpowder development, seeing it as threatening their monopoly on terrifying long-range blasty effects.

3:20 - For witchers, I'd assumed that they were immune to diseases because their mutated physiology was so different from that of normal humans. A virus or bacterium that had evolved to be able to infect normal humans wouldn't be able to infect someone if their body was sufficiently different. For mages, unless the use of magic somehow alters their physiology like a witchers' mutations do, I'd thought that their "immunity" to disease was more of a shorthand for a mage being able to use magic to prevent disease -- either a spell to quickly kill any infection that they might get, or some lasting magical effect to ward off diseases before they can even take hold -- as opposed to an actual physiological immunity. This is all still just assumption, but for Triss, since she talks about being young and inexperienced as a mage, and since she seems embarrassed when Geralt brings up immunity as something that she _should_ be able to do... I'd assumed that Triss just wasn't yet proficient enough in that kind of magic to be able to ward off diseases like a "normal," more experienced mage could. It would be like if you asked a writing student a grammar question that any proper author would know. And you hoped that the student would know it too, given their subject of study. And then they just avoided answering the question. You'd think, "oh, they probably don't know it."
@mungo71363 жыл бұрын
- witchers are puprosely enhanced also in terms of immunity against poisons and diseases - regarding their nature, they would otherwise died of all toxins, viruses and bacteria present in bodies and burrows of their "clients" - bodies of mage are somehow mutated - at least their sterility is caused by use of magic - other side effects are not described. But I thin that i.e. in books someone claims that they can be poisoned - but it was not mage, so it could be truth as well as just another myth about mages

Actually that "circle thing" in the cave system bears a strong resemblance to several H.P. Lovecraft descriptions of runic gates and runic circles for the summoning of Dagon and Nyarlathotep. Both are "old deep ones" or ancient god creatures from out of the human sphere in that lore and are at least somewhat involved in both deforming plagues and plagues of madness so it could have been some sort of touchstone to include Lovecraftian lore in the game.

@@xLetalis just checked the book, she participated in vision on Midinváerne which is winter solstice (dec. 21st), and she says it is the best night for it. They left Kaer Morhen when spring started which is end of march. So it's not from the visions. My guess is that it was dysentery of Paratyphoid fever. Trisses exact words were (in book written in my language): "Cramps Geralt are nothing, but if i get a fever... It might be... Dysentery. Or Paratyphoid fever." First, Triss was the one that suggest that it might be one of those two which indicates that she knows she is not immune to it. When Geralt asked "aren't you immune" she turned around, bit her lip and cramped up even more, and from the way it was written it seems to me that she was just ashamed that she is not immune to it. Before that, she confirmed she was allergic to elixirs, and that she heals herself only using amulets (which she forgot in kaer morhen), and when geralt suggested she cast a spell on herself she says only that she can't concentrate because of the cramps. After Geralt gave her one of his elixirs to reduce cramps, she got a fever. Geralt was hoping that it was an alergic reaction to elixir he gave her (which had a little bit of magic), but he didn't believe it (which means he probably believed that fever is actually because of what she said). Second, this lasted long time in books, since they left kear morhen, then when they arrived at some camp, and later while traveling with Yarpen Zigrin (dwarf). I don't think food poisoning would have lasted that long. Third, in the books, Yarpen Zigrin askes Geralt could it be Dysentery or Typhus, the book states "It can't be dysentery or typhus, Geralt lied convincingly, Sorcerers are immune to those diseases". Reading 'geralt lied convincingly' kind of suggests that it is one of those. Forth, Geralt wanted Ciri to stay away from Triss, but Ciri said that if dwarves and rest of company see that he is keeping her away, they might ask them to leave.

If it were to spread to our men-” “She is a wizard,” protested the witcher. “Wizards don’t fall sick …” “Just so,” the knight who had followed them out threw in cynically. “Yours, as I see, is just emanating good health. My theory is wizards heal themselves with their magic, and keep it a secret among themselves. Otherwise, they'd be expected to heal everyone around, like a common human. Can't have that. (Kind of like Geralt's Witcher Code)

@@xLetalis I might be wrong because its been a while since i read the book, but i think she wasnt sick (like an illness), but allergic to magic, and maybe she was under the effect because of the weird interaction she had in Ciri's mind (i really dont remember this detail quite well). Plus Tam B makes a really good point, it is certainly not the best seduction strategy, although (i guess) it can also be argued that its a way to test if he had any feelings for her.

I don't know if it is translation fault but in original polish version Triss could not heal herself with magic potions because she said she was allergic and only thing that works on her was amulets, and she left it at Kaer Morhen or lost... It seem pretty straightforward and not sinister on her part at all.

That is in the English version as well, the part which interests me is where Triss tells Geralt that she may have a certain type of disease, and he asks her how it's possible since she should be immune... and then she refuses to answer.

While I agree that the whole scene is way more suspicious, it just sounds like a droped plotline which can be generally said about book Triss (and I say it as someone who had red books after playing the games and was surprised by how much minuscule role Triss has in the books.) (EDIT:This will get slightly ranty but Im in the middle of my second W3 playthrough and I need to get some thoughts about W3 story out of my system.) Game Triss was always in an akward possition of being pushed into prominence by games despite being just tertiary book character. This is especially noticeable in the finall game instalment. You can tell how much CDPR was looking for to finally add Yennefer into the main plot but like in the case of wild hunt being a main antagonist, they in my honest opinion failed to insert her into their esthablished vision for the witcher world and its state after two instalment. Meanwhile Triss was there since the game one and fully embroiled into its game continuity but like the first two games she has very little to say and do in W3 finall. It is actaully telling that while Triss romance is this casablanca-esque story trying to salvage some game frenchise continuity, Yen romace is just replay of her and Geralt previous love scenes while trying to distance itself from having any impact on the world (cought cought Yen rediscovered a trial of the grass and its never brough up again, like her dealing with Nilfgaard, or her being abducted by Eredin and the list goes on)

Just a note - Geralt's use of the term "pox" doesn't need to refer to smallpox. Pox just means... ailment. Illness. In English, it's a catch-all for disease... sometimes even includes curses. As in, "A pox on you!" - being a general insult meaning, I hope you catch something nasty. Anyway, it rather makes me wish they'd ditched the "open world" gimmick and stuck with what was clearly their original design - of having a lot of big free-roam but ultimately smaller zones, accessed via world map (like White Orchard and Kaer Morhen). Because then the game's development probably would have been somewhat easier (compartmentalisation makes everything more manageable, whether we're talking code, quest or level design), and anything they couldn't ship at launch could have been patched in later pretty seamlessly, without worrying about breaking the main maps. Additionally, it would have allowed them to make certain areas as significant in design as they are in lore - Crookback Bog, for example, could have been a zone unto itself, with the task of finding the orphans and the crones something far more interesting than walking towards the only visible structure as soon as you arrive. Similarly, if dungeon areas were zoned off, more time could have been spent making them intricate and interesting, with the developers not constrained by the physical presence of nearby scenery. Oh, and another bonus to returning to the older design of loading screens and lots of smaller zones? Load times would have been way quicker, because you wouldn't have to load the entirety of the Velen/Novigrad map any time you die.

When he pointed which way was the shortest route, she noticed a famaliar mark on the hand he pointed with. With shocked surprised, she knew that mark.! It was a family tatoo , put on the hand of an infant she nursed as a baby. She asked him where was he from, he replied.." here and there, there and here" with a big grin on his face. To make this long story short, Yontek was reunited with family he never knew he had. He now lives in Novagrad with 2 sisters younger than him, and his mother. Sadly, his father passed away a few years after Yontex was taken. (They are one of the Noble famalies) in Novagrad, and he is so happy to have a family. It will be so cool if the delay for the next-gen version of the Witcher 3 was caused because they want to add more missions to the game that they cut out such as the Catriona Plague missions that you and CDPR have talked about. I really hope that the Next-Gen version will have more then just graphical updates and that we get a bit more added on in terms of missions. As for Triss I don't think she got herself sick on purpose in the books. Since she is allergic to medical spells/potions she said she uses amulets to protect herself from illnesses. She says/thinks in her head that she forgot her amulet at Kaer Morhen. If she was just trying to get Geralt's attention she could have done that so many other ways. And ways that would be much more attractive to Geralt then her needing his help to go to the bathroom which I think she would just see as embarrassing. Also I think she would have at least brought the amulet with her if she was just trying to get sick to get Geralt's attention to protect herself if she really needed. For example she fears she may die from the sickness in the books and also she could have died when they were attacked my the Squirrels as well. If she had brought the amulet with her she could of just pulled it out and healed herself so she could help fight off the Squirrels when they attacked the Dwarves carts Geralt, Ciri and Triss were traveling with. So I do think she just forgot it at Kaer Morhen and that is coming from someone who always picks Yennifer over Triss lol. Lastly I have a video idea for you. Maybe you could talk about if you think Ciri is straight, bi-sexual or a lesbian in your opinion. I see many people argue about this constantly on the internet. Though something I notice they always forget is that Ciri says she has her first orgasms when having sex with the Elf King. Which is weird if she really liked Mistle that much (as a lover at least) that she would never have a orgasm with her if she really were a lesbian or even bi-sexual. I think at a minimum Ciri is only bi-sexual since she has obvious attraction to men throughout the books while only having attraction to one woman in the books. And that one woman (Mistle) it can be argued took advantage of her and tricked her into a relationship that Ciri didn't really want. Evidence shows for this in the books in that Ciri constantly doesn't want Mistle touching her until their last night together when Ciri plans to leave her and the Rats behind (I hate the Rats and how they change Ciri from a innocent little girl into a murderer). It seems to me that Ciri is more the victim of Stockholm syndrome during her stay with the Rats. She thinks everyone has abandoned her so she does anything she can to be able to stay with that gang (the Rats). I think this would be a good video topic to talk about now before Ciri gets with the Rats (probably in season 3) in the Netflix show. Based on how the show has done things so far I have a feeling that the show will make Ciri a exclusive lesbian (not that there is anything wrong with that). But I do think it goes against how Ciri is in the books and for what people argue about her on the internet.

It would explain why he was unaffected by diseases as a lad but couldn't stop getting infected when literally having plague filled corpses on top of his head. I have a sneaky theory about Triss’ illness. I think she CHOSE not to go through all the mage enhancements. The books never state what they all are - women are typically made more beautiful and sterilized but the immunity to disease could be either a further enhancement or a direct result of how powerful a mage is. Triss in the books is strong but not as experienced. Maybe when she was taking care of Ciri she left her self vulnerable by depleting her magic? Concerning Triss being sick, I got the feeling that mages weren't really immune to illness, it was just something people believed (perhaps the mages themselves spread rumours) sort of like Witchers are unfeeling monsters. Rumours that they'd prefer not to correct. Perhaps they kept illness away/ or treated it using magic potions, potions which Triss can't take. I don't think she would have made herself sick like that to get close to Geralt. I wonder why they cut the quest. Why didn't they add it as DLC if they already had the location and everything. @xLetalis3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've mentioned it briefly in a video or 2, I might discuss it at length at some point, but I personally don't think it's true. Strongest argument against it imo is that it's basically pointless. Coral has no clear reason to assume Triss' personality, she achieves no significant goals as Triss, and everything that Triss does in the books is after her supposed switch, so why bother at all.
@morganrose70223 жыл бұрын
@@SImrobert2001 Triss was badly injured at Sodden Hill and Lytta died so the theory is that the healers got them mixed up and restored Lytta using Triss’s facial features but kept her hair and eyes which is why book Triss has chestnut hair and blue eyes while game Triss has bright red hair and green eyes. It also explains some seeming inconsistency in how she acts toward Geralt before and after Sodden Hill. Most notably re this video it explains the time “Triss” was suddenly sick as Coral having used an alchemical mixture (which she is allergic to) to remove a tattoo that would’ve identified her. Still I agree with Letalis that the missing ingredient is why Coral would do it and I definitely don’t think it’s the intended plot of either the games or the books it’s more just a fun “what if” fan theory.

well one thing is being immune to gradual degradation of body (which if I recall correctly they are not, unless they drink some special potion) and destruction of body (which they are definitely not) and other thing is being immune to diseases, which they should be. I guess the using of magic probably doesn't enhance their bodies but somehow boost their immune system or something, which may be also connected to mage's infertility or even Triss' allergy to magic potions...

My head cannon says that mages in the Witcherverse use magic rituals to protect themselves from various types of diseases and afflictions. Meaning there is more than one magical protection they cast on themselves. And, unlike a witcher's mutations, they are not necessarily permanent and require some upkeep. Some may last longer than others and such, but it probably a bit like "taking their magical vitamins" or some such. One of the reasons I have this view is some info in Alexander's notes (the guy who was researching the plague in the tower on Fyke Island), He talks about fearing that the had not kept up with this magical protection against the disease because he thought he might have gotten sick.

So , older they are , more usage of magic , more mage like - immune to certain spells, immune to diseases , not aging in the same way , unfertile ... Triss is kind of young for a sorceress., and kind of week at that point of the story , from magical point of view... and I think she is embarrased to admit it to Geralt. And you have to remember, Geralt's mother was a sorceress ... so there ARE exceptions...again , probably she got pregnant during her training at Aretuza, when she was not a full mage ...

That's not how it works though. We know that magic users are born sterile. We also know that they are stoping their aging themselves and it is not a side effect of their magic. It is a direct effect of their own actions.

@@kamilszadkowski8864 so how did Geralt-s mother got pregnant if she was born sterile ? And why is everybody after Ciri-s potential offspring , if she is sterile ? she IS a magic user ....
@kamilszadkowski88643 жыл бұрын
@@speedy7040 Because some magic users in rare occurrences are not sterile. Vissena was one of such rare cases.

@@kamilszadkowski8864 And Ciri ?... ..nope ...it makes no sense ... if they are truly BORN STERILE, don't you think the Lodge WOULD KNOW IT ? .. but they still want Ciri's child ...Vilgefortz too ... and the elves, who know everything about genetics and magic. and if Vissena was such a rare case, don't you think her genetic would have been a TREASURE to the mages ? you think they would allow her offspring to be just a mere witcher, sterilized by the trial of the grasses ?!...have you ever heard of Lara Dorren and what ppl did to her for her genetic heritage ?! But , instead, Vissena is just a low rank mage that nobody heard about it ...and her kid is not ever going to have kids of his own ....Yeah, right. and you are wrong about the aging too, because you are shallow and belive aging is about your wrinkles . The mages use spells to LOOK younger , but they do not use anything to LIVE MUCH LONGER then the average human. But they do live for hundreds of years . And Triss DOES NOT use spells to change her looks. And she still looks a lot younger then her real age . They just do not age like humans do.

@@speedy7040 Ok, first off, DID you even read the books? Because from what you are writing here my guess is no. "And Ciri ?... ..nope ...it makes no sense ... " --- It is never explained why carriers of the Hen Ichaer are not sterile like all other female magic users. It may have something to do with the fact it came from elves. "and if Vissena was such a rare case, don't you think her genetic would have been a TREASURE to the mages ? " --- The opposite. Tissaia de Vries was calling for the sterilization of all young adepts of magic to avoid them having offspring which usually ended up insane. "and you are wrong about the aging too, because you are shallow and belive aging is about your wrinkles" --- Oh, so now you are calling me shallow? Real mature. Asshole. "The mages use spells to LOOK younger , but they do not use anything to LIVE MUCH LONGER then the average human. But they do live for hundreds of years " --- Wrong again. Sorcerers and sorceresses were using the alarun decoction to stop the process of aging. It was invented by the sorcerer Ortolan by the way. "And Triss DOES NOT use spells to change her looks. And she still looks a lot younger then her real age ." --- Pfft. Then provide me a quote that proves that Triss does not alter her appearance or doesn't stop her aging. You are rambling and speculating yet you treat your own phantasmagories as some divine truth. You should become a priest... or better yet a woke activist. You are just as self-righteous as they are.

Fun fact: “peste” is the word we use in Italian for “plague”. “Peste bubbonica” is “bubonic plague” so the name “pesta” is very similar to “appestata” which means affected by the plague. This is another clue enforcing your thesis about the wraith and the mage studying the catriona plague! Great video as always man 💪🏼

Peste, as in pestilence. Common latin derivation, "pestis".
