So they put out mixed race from all over the world so that people can feel special, and a modern day American culture as well. A minor error in my opinion, but it is a good movie.👍🏼

It could be. Because they introduced all the Witchers that Vesemir trained at the end from the school of the Wolf. They could tell the story of how each student went on to different Witcher schools or their journeys as friends. Geralt saving Lambert and showing how he got his iconic face scar and such.

A few criticisms: 1. The crossguard on Vesemir's sword is backwards. It would restrict his hand's range of motion, and frustrate his swordplay. 2. In prior lore the Trial of the Grasses is the actual administration of the witcher mutagens to the boys. It's this stage of the witcher-creation process which kills the majority of the candidates. After the Trial of the Grasses, the survivors who already have the advantage of the mutations, go through further training involving monsters. It only makes sense that the successful candidates are then awarded their witcher medallions. But in this show the boys are all given medallions before they are witchers, and are dropped in a monster-infested swamp with 0 tools or defenses, to be randomly slaughtered. This cut down the candidate-pool by some 80 plus percent for NO REASON. That's dumb. 3. In prior lore, the sacking of Kaer Morhen was undertaken by an angry mob, with the assistance of mages. There is no mention of monsters. In this show, the angry mob wants to sack Kaer Morhen because the witchers created more monsters. The mob's motivation is its antipathy towards monsters. However, their mage leader brings a swarm of monsters to the battle, and the peasants charge in alongside said monsters. Comrades in arms. That makes no sense. That's dumb.

2. I would explain it through other Joe's comment that they have too many witchers. They can't say we can't accept you because there are not enough monsters because if that information would spread then people would lower prices for witcher contracts or start to question the necessity of witchers, they have to accept them but even the Trial of the Grasses is not enough to lower their numbers and they are not as bad to just kill them so they made even more brutal and otherwise ridicules trial. It would fit nicely to the overall story making witchers even more evil and desperate in trying to hide their monster problem though is that what really is going on? Unlikely.

I don't think the crossguard would be a big problem. It's not angled downwards enough to really get in the way except for some really specific moves that can be easily adjusted to fit the guard. If it had spikes, or a more aggressive angle or curve, I'd fully agree, but I think they can get away with that much. Note, yes, it's still a shitty crossguard that wouldn't catch another blade from sliding down unto the wielder's arm. But disturbing the wielder's movements are the least of its problems imo.

Not all witchers are equal when it comes to their magical signs. Geralt is actually very average with signs. Eskel and apparently Vesemir are much stronger with signs.
@Japaneseanimeguy
@Japaneseanimeguy 3 жыл бұрын
Also while I've only played the games, they're relatively short range. You might get a few meters in front of you but that's it. Aaard is a powerful windblast that as you said is mainly about pushing, while igni is fire but it's more like a quickly dispating wave or cone in front of you, that's good for lighting a fire without a flint stone or taking advantage of something with a weakness to fire, but it's not going to be a Witcher's primary form of damage dealing. A Witcher uses his swords and whatever other tools he can get his hands on that might work (because sometimes an axe or a chain might work better than slashing with a sword).

@@farbod21 did you get this information from the books? I'm currently reading The Tower of Swallows (MILD SPOILERS TO FOLLOW, read at your own risk) and the only things I've read about signs in the series (the previous 5 books) is that witches like Yennefer think of Witcher signs as a nice party trick but uses a ver small amount of power derived from Chaos compared to what actual witches can do. But I haven't read anything saying that Vesemir or any other Witcher has better use of signs that Geralt. If anything, Geralt has a unique advantage of being the son of a witch/sorcerer so he has an advantage over regular people to become a powerful sorcerer, according to Vilgefortz. Nevertheless, I would like to know of you have some information I may have overlooked. Thanks!

The thing that made no sense whatsoever is the ending fight where peasants fight alongside monsters... Like, for real? There's no way in hell that a peasant would just accept a fucking man-eating monster to help them kill witchers. That's true. I have posted this before, but will explain why I think the trial with the boys in the swamp is actually more sinister than it appears. It's not a "training" exercise... It's a feeding session. Remember at this point in history the Witchers were making monsters to stay in business. These monsters need something to feed on. Early in the anime a comment was made that the abandoned boys were a dime a dozen, there was no shortage of candidates. And the Witchers already had a good idea who would survive and die. So the surplus was just food for their beasties that they raise each year and release for jobs / coin. Is it stupid to train new Witchers this way? Yes. But remember, these are Vesemir's memories, and he had no idea about what was really happening. So it is a filtered view. However, it's a pretty smart way to raise monsters... Given no one would mourn the missing boys or call contracts for them.

The animation was great, but the "pogrom" that is described in the books has been fully done by humans with the help of mages who wanted to get the Kaer Mohren secrets (the mutagens). That was the whole purpose, to show how mob of humans driven by hate and superstitions could defeat all of the genetic modified monster killers because of the greed of mages who helped them sack the keep by blowing up the walls and helping with fighting the witchers. Now, by adding this monster stuff, and witchers causing the problem for themselves because they've created hybrids, it makes this story much more shallow in my opinion. Not to mention it doesn't make sense at all, that the same humans that hate witchers and calling them "monsters" would just stood and watch a horde of other monsters summoned by the mage who led them there.

I would say it makes a lot more sense that a bunch of humans and mages would win against witchers in their own territory with the help of monsters. Its the other scenario that makes little sense, because there is no way they took down multiple witchers on their own. Totally get it man, it just kept piling up. Minor stuff at first, but by the end (the Sacking) I considered this more of a fan fiction. My main gripes: - Vesemir says "They've sent Lambert and Eskel to scout ahead" or something like that. Lambert and Eskel are younger than Geralt. Lambert is the youngest one iirc, so he wasn't even born at the time of the Sacking. So unless they're talking about a completely different Lambert and Eskel, it doesn't make sense. - Witcher signs are too powerful here. Witchers aren't mages and they can only perform rudamentary spells via HAND signs. So the dwarf shooting magic with his stump isn't really possible. You can't melt a whole lake with igni. Aard looks more like a Kamehameha (sometimes) than a force push. - Like Alex said, the whole cooperation between monsters and normal people is kind of bullshit. It's hard to believe that this is how the Sack of Kaer Morhen went. At this point in the movie, I started to consider it more of a fanfiction than actual lore. I don't know if Sapkowski signed off on this, but to tell you the truth, I wouldn't be surprised if he did. I don't think he really cares anymore. As long as he gets a paycheck, he's fine with anything. Once again, the movie is great, but I guess that's what happens with the stuff I love: I get critical about it. That's also why I dislike the Netflix series. That just threw away Witcher lore and made up its own, with magic eels and a Yennefer that's obsessed with pregnancy.

While animation itself was generally ok, I really didn't like how they twisted original story. You have an established fanbase with esbalished expectations, and instead of giving people what they want, you take characters, main plot point (destruction of Kaer Morhen) and rewrite the story around it completely for no apparent reason. The original story was actually good enough for the cartoon. So those changes are annoying. The plot in Nightmare of the wolf is quite simple and predictable. And it does not leave you with better understanding of the witchers, how they are created, why they tend to be emotionless and so fond of doing anything for coin. I feel like it could have been explained better.

In regard to the recruitment, consider the mortality rate of the various trials. The Trial of the Grasses generally kills at least one or 2 by itself and together with the various other trials and the mortality rate of even fully trained Witchers Would be not too high but still enough for already small numbers to dwindle further. The ones who enjoy a long life like Geralt or Vesemir are incredibly rare.

I disagree. If you’ve read the books, Geralt often moves faster than the human eye can see and also some mages like Vilgefortz enhance their bodies as well. The Geralt vs Vilgefortz battle is very similar to the Tetra vs Vesemir fight. The signs were too OP though, but that’s it. There was a fight in the books where you read out of Cahir’s perspective and all he sees is limbs flying. If they did this in the games or live action series it could look stupid so I understand if they don’t do it this way.

@@mr.crowgamer6250 the signs absolutely, but for the rest I think it’s fine, or atleast not more than the games. In the battle against the wild hunt Yennefer also created a huge barrier and Triss rained down fireballs, so I don’t think it’s very different from what we’re used to. I personally even think the live action series magic is too weak and “espensive” with them needing life force to use meh spells unlike in the books where they draw from a hidden source called chaos. I understand it’s for budget reasons and clearer magic limitations, but still.

There is a logic behind Tetra not going full on mage powers during the final battle with Vesemir. When Vesemir exits Kitsu's illusion, he actually enters Tetra's illusion (or it's just another level of Kitsu's illusion). He sees his friends escaping, but that's not the case since he actually kills them all during the fight. She is toying with him, and he's probably actually fighting the Wolf school mage and other hostages she had. They don't understand why Vesemir is going all berserk on them, but try to defend themselves.

Enjoy it very much but with the exception of the Lore smashing, Kids do the Trial of the Grasses and then the survivors do the training, When they Train Ciri they explain it, she was all the way into training with out the Trial of the Grasses because They cant do the mutagens no more, and she was a female, they just did what they can do, train her all the way without the Trial. Also didn't like the fact they make Kaer Morhen the ones behind the new monsters, The sack of Kaer Morgen was supposed to be result of the ignorance and hatred, no with probable Couse. They should make the Mages be the ones behind it and maybe just Deglan finding out and keep the secret for the sake of his way of life. and Maybe Vesemir as the sole Witcher survivor of the attack then go and kill the mages responsable for the creation of the monsters and their Lab. but not making Kaer Morgen the ground zero for monster creation it feels too dam wrong.

Why would a Witcher Anime movie be given to a director obviously unfamiliar with the topic? Why would a Witcher Anime movie be given to a writing staff obviously unfamiliar with the topic? Why would a movie about Witchers be made which paints Witchers in an unfavorable light? Witchers have hunted monsters to the point of extinction, therefore threatening their livelihood? C'mon. Why would Vesemir loot a dead body for payment when he was not under contract, and then refuse the child help because he's not under contract? Why was Geralt bald as a child? Was it for the ol' switcheroo at the ending? Pretty sure we all saw it coming a mile away. Why would the Witchers go to all the time and expense in trying to create cross-breed monsters when they could just mass produce regular monsters? Why would the Witchers throw untrained, unmutated children into a swamp for the trial of the "grasses" and THEN mutate them, possibly causing death. Why did the summoned monsters not attack everyone? Surely if there's a trick to controlling monsters it would be worth more to the Witchers than just making more. Why did a Witcher allow himself to be held down and beheaded? Why was this movie even made?

Also when it comes to the signs the hand movements and gestures makes the spell more powerful it's sort of like an incantation. And also when it comes to being a Witcher is having really high mortality rates because of their expertise so that's probably why they were recruiting so many kids because they die so often. Another thing the trial of grasses is a 1 in 10 chance of survival so they bring a lot of kids to make sure that they at least get one Witcher out of it.

Lorewise is just a mess, it doesn't feel like a story taking place in the witcher world at all, there's no way this can be considered canon. All the rest, the animation and the VA, was awesome. Though it seems that we'll never get lore accurate Witcher series and movies from Netflix, but hey at least we're getting something that's good at a technical level.

The guy casting aard without his fingers... I guess witcher signs are just a very primitive sorcerer's spells so he could potentially get a mage to teach him but that would involve magical talent and a lot of time. And a mage willing to teach him.
