My father was a marine in vietnam. His aunt airmailed him some kourabiedes (greek butter cookies). The package had gotten pretty roughed up in the mail leaving only a box full of crumbs and dust. This was no issue to my italian american bronx native father. When he was out on patrol they would have a chance to settle in every now and again away from the fires of combat. He rationed one spoonful about once a day. Those bites would transfer my father away from the horrors of combat back into the bronx (and family meals). There is power in food.

On my first deployment, I told my family not to send me any gifts because we were constantly on the move and tried not to have unnecessary equipment and items on me. Around the holidays, I received a small package from my parents-there was a small USB thumb drive inside. I didn’t have a laptop but I eventually found a computer and plugged it in. My parents had put photos of my family that they had taken from the year, it made me homesick, and yet connected with my loved ones back home. It’s the best gift I have ever received and something I will always cherish.

Just rececntly lost my grandmother to cancer if you still have your grandparents or grandparent enjoy the time you have with them and cherish every moment cause you never know when that will be the last time you will get to see them alive Im greatful i got mine for 25 great years.

Food can be weirdly symbolic. I rarely slice watermelon. My family would always scoop it like ice cream during summer barbeques. Sliced watermelon was something my family did for funerals or wakes. If you scoop the watermelon into a bowl for the family members, the grand parents or adults get some extra time to see the kids before they went off to play in the yard or pool for some side talk. Sliced melon was to take and be to yourself if you'd like, it just seems wrong to cut a melon beyond the half if everything is alright. As weird as it sounds, me and my cousins used to try to build boats out of the scraped rind, napkins, and sticks.

What makes the job of a soldier hard is that, if we aren't at war, then we are at war with ourselves. Loneliness, depression, suicide, all those things plague our minds as we go on our day.

It's amazing how food can reinvigorate and comfort you in dire situations. I understand that it's more to do with natural instinct, but I think it's worth mentioning the emotional ties with food. We eat with each other, it's a very family/memory orientated thing, especially a homecooked recipe.
