I feel like NL is too accustomed to killing shopkeepers from Spelunky 1. Money is easier to come by in Spelunky 2, so just buying things is often the better choice. Alternatively, stealing without killing can get you a clutch item early on and only angers the shopkeepers for a few floors.

@@youraveragejoe8869 Best thing to do is take one item and run away, and exit the floor. Dont kill or harm the shopkeeper in any way. Next level they will be aggro, but just dont harm them again and they will forgive you after 1 level. They can die to traps and you will be fine. As long as you dont punch them. Or you can buy 1 item and steal the other if you cant afford both. Like a jetpack and a bomb box.

@@UCXEO5L8xnaMJhtUsuNXhlmQ A good strategy i find is to simply grab the item you want and run out of the shop. Jump after you leave the shop incase he fires his shotgun. Then just run down or to the exit. Most of the times he wont follow you all the way.

I understand murdering the shopkeeper (up to a certain point. I would say that half of the recent runs have been thrown away by insisting on murdering them). I just won my first run by buying from the shops up until the drill went through a shop in Volcana. The shopkeepers were a huge pain after that and almost ended me a few times. I absolutely advocate for playing it straight.

I think he wanted the spike shoes too, and didn't know about her coming out of doors later. I just lost a great run because I killed her by accident when dealing with shopkeepers because I wasn't aware of it either. And honestly there's a very good case for killing shopkeepers: the shotgun greatly simplifies the Olmec fight and getting the ankh which is almost a necessity for several paths.
