As a Black American I would like to say that his sermon is absolutely obscene. The audacity of having descended from a group of people so conceited as to believe they could own other human beings and STILL feeling comfortable enough to stand before a room full of people in 2023 and claim it was the enslaved who lacked humility is beyond me. His words are perverse and offensive to God. And by the way, enslaved Black people were tortured and even killed for being in possession of books, so the idea that there was widespread literacy without great personal risk is ignorant at best.

12:53 Slaves were considered 2/3 of a person, for purposes of Census (in order to grant more representation to states with larger slave populations to make laws and policy against the interests of those slaves.) He’s invoking the myth of the “Goodly slave master.” I think “wicked” is a dog whistle. They do have that kind of revisionist history in the south, at least up into the early 00s. They refer to the Civil War as the “War of Northern Aggression,” and abide by the debunked “Lost Cause” myth about the south. There were lots of people that needed to be humbled in the South during the Antebellum period, but none of them were of African Descent.

So Boss Hogg and his toothless family have it all figured out. In Christian theology, forgiveness does not equate with erasing the damage done to the survivor. The expectation is that the perpetrator truly repents before forgiveness is offered. Joshua has done neither. Additionally, for those who are biblically inclined, i.e., the Duggars, Kellers, the bible clearly states marital infidelity is an approved reason for divorce, but that the injured spouse is free to remarry. I am a black, Christian, American. One of my undergrad degrees is in history with a focus in African American studies. I wish I were shocked at his statements but I am not. That mindset was common during slavery and after. It is sad that in 2023 people still think like that. I believe that many of the IBLPers are racist. Part of their teachings are that white men are superior to everyone else. They only surround themselves with others who look and think like they do; no opportunity to learn about others at all. I remember when Josh and Jim Bob got a personal trainer who was African American. They went to his church for one of their kids’ gender reveals. Anna looked so incredibly uncomfortable. Regarding racism in IBLP: Back in the day, there was a 19 Kids episode where Michelle was pregnant with Josie (I believe), and the family gathered to choose names for the baby. One of the boys suggested that if it was a boy, they should name him JEFFERSON DAVIS. It was just a quick moment, said in the background, but to me it was a huge red flag. Does anyone remember this?

Whenever a slave left their masters plantation, farm or holding, they had to have a "chit" or a letter from their master saying they had petmission to travel to such and such a place.
