Please don't compare people using wood rackets with modern players. It's simply a different game and I'm speaking as a player, who's played with both (I'm 66). Wood tennis rackets had several key limitations compared to modern composite rackets: String Tension Wood rackets could not handle high string tensions like modern rackets can. The typical string tension for wood rackets was much lower, around 40-50 lbs, compared to 55-65 lbs for modern rackets2. This lower tension limited power and control. Power and Speed Wood rackets were significantly heavier than modern composite rackets, weighing around 400g compared to 250g for modern rackets2. This extra weight made them more difficult to maneuver and swing quickly. As a result, players could not generate as much racket head speed, leading to lower power on shots. Accuracy and Control The head size of wood rackets was much smaller, typically around 65-70 square inches compared to 95-110 square inches for modern rackets2. This smaller sweet spot made it more challenging to hit the ball accurately and consistently. The flexibility of wood also made control more difficult. Spin Generation The dense string pattern and small head of wood rackets made it very difficult to generate topspin compared to modern rackets4. This limited players' ability to hit with heavy spin. Durability Wood rackets were prone to warping and required frequent maintenance to keep them in good playing condition3. Modern composite materials are much more durable and stable. Feel and Touch While wood rackets lacked power, some players argue they provided better feel for touch shots and volleys compared to stiffer modern rackets4. However, this came at the cost of overall performance. In summary, the limitations of wood - weight, small head size, low string tension, and flexibility - made wood rackets significantly less powerful, spin-friendly, and forgiving compared to modern composite rackets. The technological advancements in racket materials and design have dramatically changed the game, allowing for much faster, more spin-heavy play at the highest levels.

Roger, Nadal, and Novak are all superb. It is so funny that we are most interested in fighting who is better or worse as a player and as a person. They are also all humans with low and high moments on and off the court. Sociologically, trash talk seems to be more entertaining. Generally, I believe we were blessed to have three of them creating magic on tennis courts. Each of them is special with a totally different style. It just couldn't be better.

@@soblessed2176 care to elaborate? I'm here and listening. I've seen some of the closest head-to-head matches where Djokovic came from behind to win. I didn't see anything strange there. Are you suggesting bribes for officiating? That's a serious allegation I've not see mentioned elsewhere. Tennis is usually a pretty clean and well regulated sport so I'd not think that would go unchecked. The other data point is that when I see the most recent Davis Cup footage with conversations between Novak and Roger, I don't see any animosity or resentment as I'd expect if crimes were committed as you suggest.

It is so nice that he shut the mouths of all those who claim to represent the civilised word and despite these two examples almost all players who faced him confirm that he is a gentleman.
