I don't think Serena's interview was as "savage" as it was downright nasty and contemptuous. Safina got the No.1 ranking by playing more tennis than Serena did. It wasn't her fault that Serena was injured for much of the clay season in 2009. Those tournaments that Serena mocks Safina for winning? She lost in the first round of both that year. Safina was playing at a consistently high level while Serena's results were all over the place. If Serena had an issue with the way the rankings work, she should have talked to the WTA. Not publicly and cruelly deride a hard-working player who achieved the ranking fairly and squarely.

Around this time, Safina was already receiving abuse and derision in the media and online regarding her lack of slams, as well as her mentality, her weight, her appearance, her brother, etc. She's said herself that this made her feel awful, to the extent that she considered quitting the sport long before she eventually did. So I can't imagine it helped to have one of the world's most iconic and media-adored players openly play into this ridicule, instead of using her platform to support you. Joking or not, I still think it was cruel and unnecessary, as Serena would have known fine well what Safina was going through.

Have you seen how many times she has been bashed and bullied by lies and negativity in the media, the difference is Serena has surmounted all of the adversity against her, which is way more than anything safina faced. Serena was a poor black girl from Compton who achieved the impossible by becoming the Goat of women’s tennis.
