The idea of a creature that an archmage cannot kill no matter the magic they sling at it but then some granny with a broom is able to scare it away by hitting it is hilarious and I am definitely making that a puzzle. I’d even extend the immunity to magic based attacks, 6th level monk that thinks he can punch the cat and a bard attempting to charm the kitty who has the key on its tail spend half an hour trying to trap it only for the barbarian to just throw some cheese at it and befriend it. Great way to teach players not to overthink

I once rolled a Nat 1 on a cast of Eldritch Blast. My DM decided to have me roll a 'rebound save' to see if the spell would backfire. I rolled a Nat 20 on the save. We had no idea how to role play what just happened and decided that a loud 'boom' was heard, and my character was dazed but perfectly fine when the smoke cleared. Now I can't help but imagine one of these creepy kitties popping into existence and stumbling away while my party continued the fight. EDIT: If they scramble magic, does that mean that wild magic starts behaving normally around one?

To be fair if 6th-9th level spells do work on them, then arguably spell-like abilities of comparable power (like a beholder's disintegration or petrify rays being comparable to the Disintegrate or Flesh to Stone spells) should also work. Andd while an archmage or lich might not like having to spend high level spells on such a haggard little goober, it is easily within their power to do so.

Personally, I'd love a variation of the "Crazy Old Cat Lady" that's just a hag with a bunch of Manakitti backing it up. Since Hags have a ton of "spell-like abilities" that aren't actual spells, they could absolutely abuse that loophole.

Different concept: Crazy Old Cat Lady is just a regular cat lady who adopted manakittis and now runs a "Protection" Racket with them in the local Mage population. The Wizard school pays exorbitant amounts of Gold and magic items just to keep her satisfied, for if she would let her "little angels" run loose, the whole town would loose it's magic.

I'm reminded some of the Laraken... Another fun creature that's easy for a fighter to kill, but will absolutely mess up a wizard... They can absorb spells and cast them back at you, but can also only see magic, like some weird combination of blindness and Detect Magic at the same time. I've made an adapted 5e version of it and used it in two campaigns. In one, the party just had the rogue handle a bunch of them. In the other game, everyone in the party was a magic user and the party had a lot of difficulty against just one.

I think a playable race of Grimishka might be fun. Something like "on rare occasions when magic would form a Grimishka to form, a Grimishkin is created instead", where it's just a humanoid version with weaker anti-magic/magic detecting properties. They could also be a good creature to serve evil mages, since they come about as a result of messing about with magic and making it do things it shouldn't do. A weaker version would also be cool as a pet/NPC party member, since it also seems to make sense that not all grimishkas come out of the magic proverbial womb at equal strength.
@ObakeOnna2 ай бұрын
We've been discussing with a co-creator friend of mine about granting the cat race of our world (basically Tabaxi if they were Puss in Boots sized and shaped) the very rare and remote chance to randomly transform into Gremishka-like cat goblins that can reflect spells and have their own built in wild magic surge if exposed by magic. It might be an interesting character to play, but would come with the problem that they find spellcasters and spellcasting intolerable, and would probably turn against anyone in the party that as much as uses a magical artifact.

I think their personality is why a Party could never use them. Imagine if they try to use it against a Lich, and instead of it redirecting to the Lich, it chooses to redirect it to the Party. Why? Cause it's a chaotic, torturous little bastard. It wants to cause chaos and cannot be tamed. Having one with you means you're willing to get backstabbed just for the thing's amusement, shits and giggles. I find it way more dangerous than anything a Party could try to get their hands on, cause it can't be reasoned with. A magical beast made with failure, having no soul, has no reason to care for morality or loyalty. It just exists. So ya, good luck to anyone fighting them or trying to befriend them.

I like the idea these creatures are the living embodiment of wild magic surge and as such are drawn to that which has an unusual concentration of magic. They just seek to discharge themselves. But that is easier said then done and feeding their charge can make all sorts of things happen. Perhaps an arch wizard could use them as living magic batteries for rituals. But lesser mages just end up losing eyebrows, losing self respect, losing levels, and even losing their lives.

Anti-magic plague version: - not a specific creature, but an effect that spreads from the original creature to others -- when a creature with the effect would be directly affected by a levelled spell, a number of creatures whose combined hit dice equal the spell's level or lower gain the effect --- multiple affected creatures don't multiply the hit dice; funny as that'd be, it's funnier to have lots of weak creatures suddenly immune to Wish or Meteor Swarm - casters of any sort are immune, even if they are natural casters or got it through feats - Cantrips feed such creatures, so you could keep one as a pet with little to no upkeep; cantrips can't spread the effect - completely immune to any effects of spells or spell-like abilities (though not indirect consequences, eg. Can't teleport them to a volcano but summoned creatures could affect them)

The players who get offended at even the *idea* of putting their previous pet in danger, now *they* are people you should give one of these to-preferably without telling them any of its cool abilities, so that one day their pet can pay back all the love they’ve shown it by saving their lives in turn.
