Here's Judy's false start on "Over The Rainbow" (which was actually used in the film - the rest of the next take was added on to it), Ray Bolger's first, softer, version of "If I Only Had a Brain", and Buddy Ebsen's (the original Tin Man) version of "If I Only Had a Heart" (which I strongly prefer to Jack Haley's).

Haley was SO superior; Buddy..a talented guy, no doubt, was a gangly, country-style guy who could barely sing; there would have been almost NO contrast between him and Bolger (who COULD sing). Jack Haley was the PERFECT choice for the Tin Man; he was a very popular actor, light comedian, crooner, and dancer, whose singing was EONS better than Ebsen's and who brought a gentle, sad sweetness to the part..again PERFECT for the (supposedly) heartless Tin Man. The contrast with Bolger was GREAT, and the soothing sound of his voice (both sung and spoken), is one of the many facets of the film that make it so effective, emotional, and iconic. LR

Although Judy Garland and Buddy Ebsen were both midwesterners, there’s a difference in how they voiced their r’s at the end of words or following another consonant. Buddy Ebsen’s “r” was very pronounced while Judy Garland’s “r” was more restrained, conveying a natural subtlety in the pronunciation. I guess it’s all about the genre and style of the song.

Like most people in Hollywood in those days, Judy tended to talk in a midatlantic way, though she made sure to pronounce "aunt" as "ant" rather than "awnt," as she would have done in real life.

I prefer Jack Haley's singing voice over Buddy Ebsen's! Jack Haley was perfectly cast as was everyone else in the 1939 MGM Beautiful, Beloved, Brilliant Classic, Clever, Delightful, Excellent, Exceptional Fantastic, Grand, Iconic, Marvelous, Outstanding, Perfectly Cast, Wonderful, Fantasy Musical Movie, The Wizard of Oz! Notice that Buddy Edsen sings Concerning Love and Art while Jacke Haley Sings Regarding Love and Art! Outstanding Recording! Buddy Ebsen's singing is very good!

I prefer Jack Haley's voice and he was the perfectly cast as the Tinman/Hickory! Buddy Ebsen singing is inferior to everyone else s vocal talents in the move! I am glad Jack Haley was cast in the movie! Actor and dancer Buddy Ebsen would have been an inferior Tinman/Hickory to actor and dancer Jack Haley! This movie is perfectly cast! Everyone is excellent in the movie! This beloved, excellent, extraordinary, fantastic, magnificent, wonderful MGM 1939 classic movie The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie of all time! I was born in 1978. I own this on videotape, Laser Disc, DVD, Blue Ray, cassette tape, and CD. Thank you for posting and sharing this!

I have the CDs with the Ebsen takes. It's obvious that he was not right in this part on several levels. First, he had no realization of the character. While his singing is barely "adequate," his phrasing lacks feeling and is rather "sing-song" in its meter. In some of his takes, he was reminded to articulate "heart." Some of his takes are marred by a rather gravely sound in his voice. If the reason for accepting this sort of performance was due to a lack of oil on his vocal chords, it's apparent that such a "joke" would have been a distraction. The take used here was probably Ebsen's best. The rest simply were not good. Haley displayed greater acting range and feeling, which was apparent in his takes, which were fewer than Ebsen's. The alternative "If I Only Had a Brain" may have been from early in the production under Richard Thorpe. It's apparent that the staging was more intimate since Bolger is singing in more of a "whispered" delivery with more confined acting. This is apparent when matched up with the film, which was re-staged under Victor Fleming. I would suggest that Ebsen might have been better in his original casting as The Scarecrow with his "Country Boy" personality.

I couldn't disagree more. You may prefer Haley, but I think Ebsen would have been great. I've never liked Haley's fey performance, which he said was done "as though I was reading to my child." There's already one delicate character - the Cowardly Lion - and the Tin Man works much better as the tough woodsman he was. I think Ebsen would have brought the necessary roughness for a man with no heart, and his singing was just fine for this character.
@RayPointerChannel

I think Ebsen would have be far better in his original part as The Scarecrow. His "country boy" personality would have been better suited for that role. Everyone feels that Haley was just right for The Tin Man and can't imagine anyone else in that role because he plays it with tenderness and sentiment. It might be a bit prejudicial to label his performance as being "fey" without considering other factors that entered into the interpretation. Haley's performance is based on a Victorian Sentimental "Gentleman" personality, the sort that many Fairy Tale characters were like. Because a man has high pitched tenor or soft-spoken voice does not make him effeminate. And The Cowardly Lion is not "fey." He's self-effacing. Keep in mind also that they had Victor Flemming as a Director to guide the characterizations. At the same time, these characters were symbolic components of a young girl's dream. So one needs to enter the fantasy in the mind of the character and not be tempted to read in too much adult realizations which may not exist in this fantasy.

I'm a gay man, so I'm certainly not prejudiced against gay people. Lahr has actually become a gay icon for how queenie he is as the lion, and MadTV did a sketch in which Haley appears as the Tin Man with a gay lover. So many people see them both as being something other than manly. I think it worked really well for the Cowardly Lion. The Tin Man should have been tougher, I think, and Ebsen would hae brought that to the role.

The only reason they didn't keep Ebsen is that the aluminum powder makeup put him in the hospital with a severe allergic reaction and nearly killed him! They had no choice but to go with someone else or scrap the picture. Enter Jack Haley.
