I've heard that in 1995, The Offspring thought they would lose their punk cred if they let Weird Al do a parody of Come Out And Play called "Laundry Day." Three years later they released Pretty Fly for a White Guy and let him do an equally cheesy (but kosher) version: Pretty Fly for a Rabbi

@60degreelobwedge82 Жыл бұрын
Americana is the perfect Offspring album. It has legitimate bangers like Staring at the Sun and No Brakes. It has radio rockers like The Kids Aren't Alright. Cringy lyrics like She's got Issues that seemed off in 1998 and have aged even worse.. And the 2 greatest of all the offspring comedy songs, Get a Job and Pretty fly for a white guy.
@inconvenienced Жыл бұрын
@@60degreelobwedge82 yeah I 100% agree with this. Also imo pay the man finally succeds in their obvious quest to write a marginally epic closing song - of course they couldn't just let the album end with the song but had to add that weird pretty fly reprise as a hidden track, wouldn't be an offspring album without bad decisions I guess
@60degreelobwedge82 Жыл бұрын
@@inconvenienced right! I forgot about that. I'm listening to the reprise now as I type this. The pointless hidden track on CDs was such a stupid 90s thing to do. Offspring has always been a guilty pleasure for me as back then I thought I was too cool to openly like them but I genuinely loved them. I got a free ticket to a show back in 1995 and they were awesome live and didn't pretend to be anything other than a stadium rock band- they saved the hits for the encore, pulled kids up on stage to sing along with keep em separated and just rocked out. It was super refreshing after seeing Fugazi and NOFX that same month who seemed uncomfortable with their fame and trying too hard not to be sell outs.
@inconvenienced Жыл бұрын
@@60degreelobwedge82 lol the hidden track, oh the pointless hours I've spent waiting for the invariably disappointing hidden track! Yeah I've actually been pretty protective of the Offspring over the years, I feel like they're in the same vein as Green Day where they get easily dismissed as... well, the "hoop shredding gigolo" band instead of a good band with legit punk bona fides that just happened to be in the right place to blow up in the 90's - of course, they could gone the NOFX route and told all the majors to fuck off and became weird punk lifers, but I don't think the jump to Columbia really diminished their sound in any way, for every "pretty fly" or "original prankster" they have 3 or 4 songs like no brakes or come out swinging that would've fit right in on Smash. Plus Dexter used his sellout money to go back to grad school which I think is pretty awesome. Anyway, this is a lot of words to say "I also like the offspring" so I'm gonna stop now, apart from saying that even though I laughed at "you can smell the noodles" I think Pat's being a little hard on them here, even pretty fly has a fun riff in the background - the only hit song they had that sounded anything like that was self esteem and the stand out of that song was the bassline anyway. I still can't justify original prankster though

I used to love Offspring because I didn't know what metal was yet, and they were a lot shreddier than most other crossover punk bands. Every album had to have a goofy track like Pretty Fly, and we kind of suffered through those. I loved the vid. Love your concept since you came out. There is one thing, The Offspring made music fun, bashing Offspring is also fun. In 2023, I think we need a band to be fun in this way. Rock music used to be fun, even in 2000's I remember listening to Linkin Park, Offspring, Limp Bizkit, The White Stripes, Slipknot, Soad. They tried really hard to be fun, exciting, new, different. Yeah, it's cringy when you grow up but when I was a kid it was so much fun. Today as a 30 year old I listened to Meteora, full album, in my car and I can smell my childhood, excitement, like that album was like a video game for me, even better. Offspring's Smash, Americana. Like my friends and I all had ps1 but we would spend more time talking about music and playing and imagining what's coming next and how fun music is. Today music is really boring, not becuase I'm grown up but bcause nothing fun is happening there. Of course, the reason you are so big is because you are fun unlike everything else on KZbin with their serious take on this and that.

Its important to note that if one decides to dabble in the *Dark Art* of "Offspring-Song Theory", they should know that there are two cleanly divided sub-categories: •"Early Offspring" which is mildly entertaining/amusing but calorically empty non-sense (The smaller of the two sub-genres, particularly resonant with angry, middle class pre-teens) •"The Entirety of the rest of The Offspring catalog" which by alchemic law CANNOT by any means amount to anything that isnt *thoroughly*, almost impressively, fucking annoying (Great vid/cast though)
