absolutely loving this. and regarding the starburst thing around 37:00 it put me in mind of Beavis & Butthead on Radioheads Creep. Beavis asks “How come they don’t just, like, play that cool part through the whole song?” Buttheads consise analogy “Well Beavis, if they didn’t have a part of the song that sucked, then it’s like, the other part wouldn’t be as cool.” See, even Butthead gets it 🙂

Yeah its really weird. Ive noticed some of my favourite bands have started doing this, releasing song after song on Spotify in a trickle-feed rather than a whole album all once, and the worst thing is, it works! I've noticed I'm more likely to click and listen if its a single song rather than an album. And multi-song releases are most often EPs with just a handful of songs and remixes, not LPs. Our attention spans are the casualty of social media and it sucks 😑

@shannon7618 Жыл бұрын
Good day to you, Justin. Like many people in these comments, I love your work and I love Pat Finnerty’s work so this was such a pleasure to watch. I’m sorry that you’ve both been copping some flak from overzealous Frusciante/RHCP fans about your feelings towards the music. It’s never nice to be told that one’s musical opinions and feelings are ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. For about 25 years I personally never gave a cat’s knuckle about Frusciante’s guitar playing or RHCP’s music, but during the pandemic, I watched RHCP’s ‘Live at Slane Castle ‘03’ on KZbin and I became gradually enraptured with Frusciante’s performance, energy, and some sort of magical 'je nais sais quoi' that I couldn’t put my finger on. When I tried to figure out what it was, I mostly skipped RHCP’s albums and went straight to Frusciante’s solo music. To my surprise, I really loved his solo work, especially his '94 album and his albums in the '00s. His guitar-based solo music varies in style, but it all has elements of raw vulnerability and openness which I find very comforting and inspiring to listen to. In my opinion, Frusciante's sincerity in his solo work is particularly endearing in both the context of his personal adversities circa '92-98, and also taking into account that he would be aware that his RHCP fame would attract a lot of attention towards his solo music which wouldn't necessarily be positive. Say what you will about his first album 'Niandra Lades...', it takes a lot of guts to release music of that nature when you have the ability and the means to write a crowd-pleasing song like 'Under the Bridge'. As an aside, I think if one genuinely loves the way a song makes you feel, then it really shouldn’t matter what other people think about it, even though it’s easy for us to feel defensive and hurt when our musical tastes are called into question. At the end of the day, it’s just our egos that can cop a bruising. The music itself is fine. It just continues to exist in its untouched form, waiting in the ether for people to come across it in their own time. For anyone who’s interested in checking out Frusciante’s solo music (but doesn’t want to listen to a whole album), I’d recommend the songs, ‘Time Tonight’, ‘The Dying Song’, ‘Every Person’, ‘Your Pussy’s Glued to a Building on Fire’, ‘Omission’, ‘Been Insane’, ‘Loss’, ‘Unchanging’, ‘The Mirror’, ‘The Slaughter’ and ‘The First Season’. Take care Justin and take care everyone. May our musical discourse always be civilised, spirited and respectful.

I just finished to watch it complete. I enjoyed it very much! Lots of laugh with the "Back in Black" part... The Carlos Vives' song is Pa' Mayte (It means For Mayte), Mayte is a woman's name. It was very interesting your conversation about songs creation, and your both opinion about currently pop music. I didn't know that you had participated in writing sessions for pop artists. In what way does it happen? I mean, who do ask to the composer the lyric? Is the artist her or himself? Is the music company? Shakira told once that she only sings songs which are related to self experiences... so having in account that she is song writer too... I can't understand that she doesn't participate herself in this kind of sessions. An old Spanish singer, she sang copla (typical spanish music different to flamenco) told once that as well she wasn't song writer or composer she liked to meet with her songs composer to talk about the lyrics in her albums, the subject, the ideas she had, even though her own life experiences... So they composed songs by it. I would love that you talked a little more about this stuff, because it's very interesting for people like me who aren't musicians. In my opinion, the big problem in music industry currently is the same than in the rest of activities. Everything is under the control of big companies which monopolize the industry and market, they only want accumulate money and they don't care the art itselfs, only the result quick, easy and commercial. So the most of singers, bands...look like made by design, everybody sounds equal...

As much as you may regret what happened with Brian Johnson at the tribute show I don't think you realize how many followers you gained that day. I got reacquainted with you after 20 years and I'm certainly not the only one. I would love to see you interview Brian Johnson long form in the future.

Love the long form interviews. Can't get enough Pat Finnerty. Shitegeist is definitely the word of the day.
