My 13 year old was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome when he was 10. I've literally sat up with him many nights while he sat devastated in his room because he thought he was broken. "Mom, why is this happening to me?". So many tears shed and constant worry about my child dealing with this syndrome while I just feel utter helplessness. This is disgusting and I mean this with the upmost disrespect, fuck these people.

He’s going on 20 now and as he reached his later teen years his tics became less frequent and less intense. We were told by his psychiatrist that around age 15 that can happen to a lot of kids with TS. He still has them here & there but it’s mostly just a head bob that looks like he’s saying yes to everything lol. I just want to say that it can and does get better. Hang in there, our son is now a happy, well adjusted, confident, funny guy with a lot of empathy & the biggest heart for having lived with this syndrome. Don’t give up hope & know there is light at the end of that tunnel. Your son will be a better person for having gone thru this. Sending u & your son lots of love & positive vibes ❤️ ✌️.

She spent the next 8 years in and out of mental institutions and hospitals, she couldn’t hold down a job, social and intimate relationships were impossible for her to maintain, her life was a sht storm. I knew her since we were kids so I was one of the few who stayed around for her. She felt like she couldn’t cope with reality and took her life. DID is not quirky or cute!

DID is literally an extreme trauma response from the brain. It's a defence mechanism. It is so so rare and I can't imagine how awful it must be to be a person who is going through it/ someone who's brain NEEDED to do it. In order for someone to be diagnosed with a mental disorder there has to be a significant part of that persons life that is impacted by their symptoms. In fact, you cannot make a diagnosis without it. So, by default if they are glamorizing their symptoms then they are not ready to recieve a proper diagnostic. I bet though that at some point what is the initial underlying reasons for them faking disorders will become the primary reason they seek help.

Narcissists are usually smarter, but egotistical... they seek control and resources and want to remain secluded... so as to make their deception more effective. 2. Borderlines are always mass producing negative thoughts and emotions about themselves and others. They seek to avoid anything which will set off their psychosis and manipulate to keep people close or distance them from them. 3. People with Mood Disorders would generally be too busy trying not to be called "crazy" by the people in their lives... 4. Sociopaths manipulate and deceive to cause someone emotions and physical pain.

This is what happens when you praise everyone's problems because of acceptance. I'm doing so much better by taking care of myself instead of just "accepting" it. Thank you random wise KZbin comment person.
@jeremygilbert79892 жыл бұрын
A mentor once told me something similar. He also taught me a great deal on how to recognize and properly react to my mental illness when it flared up and even when it was relatively dormant(I'm a type 1 Bipolar for the record). The cognitive therapy techniques he instilled in me have literally saved my life and I don't understand why anyone would seek to emulate a severe mental or emotional illness unless they were suffering from an entirely different mental illness. Narcissistic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, Munchausen syndrome, any of these would likely be more accurate for the crazies that post this nauseatingly appropriating filth so why not just tout the actual fucking problems in your head instead of trying to pretend like you have others? My only conclusion is that they can't garner the same level of sympathy from such negatively connotated conditions and as narcissists that's unacceptable so they've deigned to co-opt the most extreme of mental illnesses in order to retain their special snowflake status without having to suffer the consequences of their actions

I appreciate your take Blaire. As someone with a masters in counseling, disorders were never supposed to be a label. They were supposed to just help professionals have some common language and symptoms that could help us have a better idea of what techniques would be helpful or if medication should be considered. Insurance companies have really messed it up for people in the helping profession. And for insurance, we often have to diagnose someone the first time we meet them. It’s a mess. But what if the diagnosis are wrong? And the pills that they’re given worsen them or the chemicals in the pills cause some other issue? That isn’t exactly helping the patient/client if treatment is started for something that’s nonexistent. I don’t know how therapists, psychiatrist, psychologist, etc. do it. This should be talked about way more, this has GOT to change. It’s destroying good people on both sides of the fence.

Personality disorders are so hard to diagnose. I was diagnosed BPD a few years ago, but my current therapist is on the fence. I still show symptoms, and when I was diagnosed I checked LITERALLY every box, but it was at its worst when I felt like I was trapped by the disorder. I got out of that community and got so much better. I still struggle, but my symptoms are much more controllable. People who actually have a mental illness WANT TO GET BETTER. they document their HEALTH journey, showing how and why the got better, not just their demise 🙄🙄🙄

Used to work as a pharmacy tech and the amount of teenagers and people in their 20's that got Xanax constantly is unreal. I had one woman who was 24 years old and she got 150 Xanax 1 mg per month for her "anxiety." She took five mg of Xanax every day! I've seen terminal cancer patients who are within an arm's reach of death get the bare bones medication to help them calm down. The ADHD meds with college kids are the worst though. I've worked at the pharmacy for 6 years so I've seen these kids when they were in middle school. None of them were on ADHD meds but now that they're going to college (usually when half the of the first semester is over) like clockwork, they all start showing up with scripts for Adderall, Ritalin and Concerta. Public schools aren't allowed to fail kids anymore so when these kids go to college they face failure for the first time and realize they can't just stare at their phones all day, not pay attention, not do the work and be granted an automatic pass. If you want to see more on the state of public schools look up the channel Teacher Therapy.

We both had regular breakdowns when his work was incomplete, because he was truly trying his hardest. What disgusted me was when some girl who also went to my school posted a video on Tiktok, saying that this one playlist of music made her ADHD disappear, allowing her to get her work done. That's not how ADHD works... It doesn't just vanish with something you like. That's just called not having motivation to do work, which everyone gets at points in time. ADHD not only affects the person with ADHD but also those around them, so I literally despise when people use it as a 'quirky' aesthetic.

I agree with so much of this. I’m diagnosed with autism and fell into the woke identity crowd for several years. I became more autistic and more disabled as a result of making it my identity. It was extremely unhealthy. Once I left the community and started working on myself (nutrition, fitness, and other personal development), I lost the majority of my “autism” symptoms. I only had so many symptoms because I was thinking about autism too much and creating those symptoms in myself. The mind is very powerful and most people don’t understand how easily it can create or worsen symptoms. Looking back on my time in the neurodiversity community, I believe I saw this happen to lots of other people. I saw people gradually taking on more and more autistic traits (which they’d never had before) under the guise of “un-masking.” Un-masking might be a real thing, but I believe the term is being misused by people who are simply very suggestible and are creating symptoms in themselves. I also think it’s used as a way for people to take on a more disabled identity without being accused of faking.

Same with me and Autism. I've grown up being shamed and dismissed because I wasn't "smart" or "like everyone else" and I do my best to avoid the topic of Autism all together due to the bad memories associated with it. It comes out more in social situations because sometimes I don't always catch on to social interactions, so I've just replaced it with having social anxiety, which I do, but I just say I'm not good at talking because of my social anxiety rather than saying I have Autism.

As a mental health professional, I have a a few clients with DID. I know that they would be outraged by those who are faking this problem. DID is the result of very early, repeated extensive childhood trauma (think sex and physical torture). None of my clients would have ever put themselves out to social media to get clicks. DID is so painful and confusing, at times, to those who have it, that they would never want others to suffer as they have suffered. Also, unfortunately, people tend to focus on their diagnoses. Most therapists hate giving diagnoses, because of this problem. However, we have do to so in order to be paid by the insurance companies.

I'm autistic, too. I was diagnosed when I was 16, and the damage has already been done. I never learned how to communicate properly or to read people's expressions or realise when I'm going to far, etc. I was bullied relentlessly when I was younger for being the weird kid and lived lonely, isolated and without a single friend for years because I never had the opportunity to learn how to initiate or maintain a healthy, genuine friendship. The isolation shattered my mental wellbeing to the point where I couldn't even bother getting out of bed, shower, eat or brush my teeth for days. I was eventually diagnosed with AvPD (basically life-long social anxiety) and I constantly feel like I don't belong here. Like I'm just an outside observer and not actually taking part in society. I would do anything to just be normal. I don't want to be special, I just want a normal life. Seeing people on TikTok celebrating their cute quirks and unusual interests pisses me off so much. And don't even get me started on the trend of self-diagnosing.

From trauma to mental disorders we feel like we need it in order to even function. From opiates to benzos and all the stuff in between. Speaking of, I think one of our greatest struggles with homelessness is not the homelessness itself, but mental health. It's said that if you've met one Autistic person, you've met... one Autistic person. It infuriates me when these self-absorbed little shitheads think that being Autistic is 'trendy', and do it just for attention. They've never suffered from a Meltdown, they don't know what it's like to feel bad about upsetting people, or how a lack of empathy actally feels. Of course I have to tell people I'm Autistic. I don't have a flashing sign on my head. But when people are faking it, they make it very hard to be believed - especially when the fakers love to tell people I'm just being Ablist.

100%. That's one of my biggest fears. These folks (as a whole) don't seem to take it very well when reality smacks them up the side of the head! Jordan Peterson in one of his videos (I really don't remember which one, I'm sorry) talked about the Columbine shooters and their "manifesto", and it was extremely enlightening. They basically made themselves crazy (over time) until they simply broke and took kids out. His description is spectacular. It was an "Aha!" moment for me. The sheer prevalence on tik tok is scientifically astounding and disturbing that people go to such lengths... I agree with you too that these people are looking for ways to substantiate their lives.. really sad - wish i knew what the solution was... :/

I've spent two years in various mental institutions having been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and of all the hundreds of people I met, two were diagnosed with DID (insofar I know; not all patients talk to each other, but most do). Neither of them displayed behavior that was even remotely similar to what you see in this video. They did not have "alters" in the sense of persona with actual names and stuff. Rather, they sometimes sort of snapped out of themselves and start humming or crying and seemed just complete spaced out and incapable of making contact. Personally, I think the concept of DID is more a result of an overanalysis by psychiatrists and them trying to find meaning behind something that doesn't really have meaning. The patients just have severely damaged minds in different ways resulting in behavior that isn't really explainable.
@Randomhuman333 Жыл бұрын
I remember the Myspace phobia lists, I remember being emo and 'it's not just a phase MOM!,' I remember the desire to shift your entire persona to be accepted by society. My best friend growing up fit more into the 'popular kids' demographic and I was an 'oddball' (though there were many of us so it wasn't that odd). Both of us changed our hairstyles, clothing, the words we said, and the shows we watched to fit into our own respective groups. When you are young you are trying on different hats, exploring how you feel engaging in different communities, and discovering yourself outside of being a fully dependent child. If you are vulnerable as a kid you will likely get even more wrapped up in trends and fads. If you weren't able to have a solid sense of self-identity (for whatever reason) it is very easy to become like modeling clay. I remember feeling so unique, so righteous, so misunderstood... and at times I was. But for the most part, I was growing up and reacting to my own trauma, familial relationships, and friendships, and learning what kind of person I would want to ultimately be. In my High School poetry class, my teacher read us a poem by an elderly poet who had been writing for quite some years. It was beautiful. He then went on to share that she had written that poem in her 70s and when asked about it later in her 90s she responded "I was so immature then." Hearing that phrase saved me in a lot of ways. It helped me realize that we are responsible for ourselves. If we want to grow, be happy, and find success (whatever that means to you) we will have to continue learning and unfolding. I realized I don't have to stick with a thought or ideology just because I was once committed to it. Sometimes what felt right at the time doesn't feel right after a new experience or idea comes your way. This is a part of life. This is natural. Unfortunately now it seems that too many people have chosen not to take accountability for themselves. I know, it can be a heavy burden to carry, but it is our own burden not the burden of someone else. Now it feels like plenty of 'adults' are overgrown children who avoid critical thinking and responsibility at all costs. Unfortunately, these are the adults that are 'leading' (or often grooming) the youth. There are millions of level-headed and amazing young people out there, as well as adults. But, we do seem to be facing a crisis of lack of integrity and critical thinking across the board. It is not shocking to me that we are where we are now. And I believe this is a huge wake-up call to the average North American (or westerner). We must stop allowing madness to run the show if we don't want to cannibalize ourselves as a whole.

The actual disorder gets so minimallized and triviallized when people take it on as some sort of quirk of their persona. It's been happening with OCD for so long already. People claim it's just this wierd little part of them that makes them keep everything 'just so', when really the disorder is f***ing hell but nobody except sufferers and those who know sufferers really understand that. This trend is deeply frustrating. I have severe ADHD. Back when I was in elementary and middle school, the criteria for diagnosing and treatment was the same for boys and girls, even though girls present very differently. While my brother was diagnosed and appropriately treated since he was 6, I didn't even get a diagnosis until I was 10 and my parents had to go to private counseling because the school refused to have me evaluated. (guess they didn't care that I was failing all of my classes, couldn't sit still and had horrible tics and sensory issues) I have scarring from scratching my arms until I bled, neck and jaw pain from grinding, twisting and flinching from tics I can't control. I was treated like a lab rabbit and suffered so many side effects to find medication that worked because there was hardly any information on how it effected girls. I was bullied horrifically and spent my whole life believing that I was stupid because I failed exams simply because I couldn't look at the page long enough to process the directions. 15 years after being diagnosed and suddenly these entitled, pity-grabbing children want my life experience? If they want to suffer so badly, they can have my ADHD. Go ahead and take my infertility from medication too, get the full experience.
