I remember beating Metroid and discovering Samus was a girl. A bunch of us talked about it for a while. It was exciting. Blew away our expectations because of standard masculinity in games that was the norm. Just never thought a "girl" was so kickass. Thought never occured to me until recently that this negative culture would now label it with the normalized catchphrases they use and ignore one of the greatest games of all time. Sure, some now might defend it with "it wasn't forced down our throats," whatever that's supposed to represent. But the whole shock value came from the break with the social norms at the time. After that, there was more representation for females, but even then, some were against it. History seems to repeat often. But yet still indifferent from the past.

One thing that I think that kills the nuance on the conversation is the fact that some devs creates really bad or mid games these days for one reason or another, but to shield themselves from criticism, they kinda weaponize the inclusivity argument to gather the "woke" crowd to defend them. At the same time, you have the "based" people taking over the conversation and making people belive that the fact that a game is mediocre or bad is because they "went woke" instead of just being bad in order to further this culture war... unfortunately some real bigots infiltrate gaming comunities and make people think that a game is bad because of the "woke" agenda. On the other side, some extremist from minority groups who are just as bigoted as their "enemies" are all to comfortable throwing true bigots and average gamers who have reasonable criticisms over some games on the same side, hating both as if they were one and the same, pissing a lot of people in the process... I kinda rambled a little, but to me THAT seems to be the problem with this front of the "culture war" on vídeo games that almost no one is talking about.

We need more channels like this "identifying" themselves as not culture warriors, so this is just music to my ears... Though this is the first that I've heard the term "based" used to mean "anti-woke." I thought it just meant something like "wholesome" or genuine or true. Meh. That said, the whole "just buzz off and game elsewhere" argument doesn't register w me regarding Dragon Age which has directed me right into the culture war that I've been mostly avoiding up to now other than to mock both sides of it. That's essentially the attitude of the developer team that's hijacked the IP to drive it into the dirt: "we're in charge now and you're no longer welcome, so scram!" The latest "DA" is clearly taking sides on the extreme "cultural" positions. It's not Dustborn, though we'll see how bad it gets. Plus there's the way that devs keep declaring game detractors as anti-woke for pointing out the poor quality and heavy departures from the franchise, using the culture war as a smokescreen (albeit not the first example of it). DA was made for someone like me, but the latest "DA" appears made against someone like me. Harder to reconcile this by just walking away, but I suppose ultimately I simply will. I'm certainly not buying the game. In the meantime I seem to need to kvetch.

Want an example, critics always state games like Starfield, Concord, Silent Hill 2 are woke, but there is no meaning to them at all. Why is silent hill 2 woke? Because one character looks unconvetionally unattractive. Why is concord woke? Because characters are too diverse. Why is star field woke? Cuz Bethesda ig. But this analysis simplifies the reviewing process of games. Some of the games listed have good points too and reasons some might enjoy them, and negative points and yet modern day reviewers like Synthetic man, Andypants throw the word 'woke' around to express a game doesnt fit their political agenda and thus people avoid the game mentioned simply for lack of initiative toward the game, despite games containing elements which could be good for them.

The discourse has evolved to a level that it's just insults now from both of the sides, instead of valid criticism, around 5-10 years ago, people were vocal about the changes they wanted with a few bad apples others were respectful and gave fair criticism. It really just boils down to whether or not the game preaches its agenda to the gamer. A sermon/lecture != story/lore. Those that scold DA:V almost universally praised BG3 (arguably more 'woke'). Woke has a place in the gaming industry if it's implemented correctly. If the game is in the future and said characters are written well. But if it depicts the past, (fantasy or not) nobody has time to think about that. People are trying to kill me left and right! The Veilguard ( I will never call this game Dragon age) is an example of people walking on egg shells. Can you imagine living in a world that is in a brink of destruction and you and your allies are the only thing holding the line. While all that shit is happening, you sit with one of your crucial companions, trying to explain how they are non-binary. WTF? Where did you learn that? Secondly, the world is gonna be destroyed! What's this on about...... right from the gate, baldurs gate 3 had it included, but it wasn't forced, while the gameplay and story took precedence, unlike many new games that are half assed but over push the dei..... this video is somewhat exaggerating and inaccurate in some ways, as almost no one cares if there's various gender usage as long as it fits and isn't just forced. Cyberpunk anyone? There's some good points in here but also a few I'd call off.
