Thing to remember about investing in penny stock reserve list cards: They have to be playable. They can be niche, or do a very specific thing (look at femeref enchantress; very narrow enchantment style card but still went from 50 cents to $27 when enchantment-based EDH decks got big last year), but they have to be good in SOME way. The best way to get a spike on a penny stock RL card is for it to suddenly be good (ACTUALLY good) in a new popular deck type. And it could happen at any time; could be tomorrow, could be in 6 years. Gotta be willing to sit for a while.

I’ve been after Reserved List cards for over a year now, but I’m just trying to get one copy of everything. Buyouts are one thing, that’s for people trying to make big flips. I just want the cards, and one copy of each is fine with me. But the thing I love about magic is, you never know when something new will come along that changes the functionality of older cards. Let us never forget Lion’s Eye Diamond.. that’s what sparked it for me! Back when I played in the 90s LED was an utterly worthless card. Found some cards I still had back in 2016 and had 2 LEDs in the mix, and the mechanics of the game had changed to such and extent that LED had shot up to over $200 each. So while I also don’t really recommend trying to buy out a specific cheap/crappy card, I fully endorse picking up 1-4 copies of something cheap that’s Reserved List, because you really can’t LOSE money on having a playset or less. Plus, the art is just on another level!

If you buy up 100 cards at 1 buck and the sell-price goes up to $5, the buy-price from dealers is usually gonna still stay at about $1, since there's no true demand for it for a deck. They are Not going to suddenly buy them for $4.25. You're only option is to slowly resell them on ebay, one by one, which is a lot of time and work. The only exception to this is if it's a card that went up because people actually want it for a deck, like what's happened recently with Pale Bears, a crap rare from Ice Age that's now a few bucks each.

Being on the reserved list doesn't mean dick, it's a small part of a way bigger picture that you should be actively trying to piece together if you're gonna throw money at something.

No. In two years if Modern Horizon boxes drop 20% you then also have to add on the fact that everyone will be trying to sell them for that 20% loss, paypal fees, possibly ebay fees and if you are shipping them possible loss of package. For a possible 50% gain it is not worth the risk cause that 50% gain is a huge stretch due to them already costing twice as much as a normal box and being print to demand.

Ruby first and foremost I have to say, That is a magnificent tie. I don't play Magic but you're awesome. Question though; Is card design predictable? You mentioned how most cards are probably insignificant why would it jump up. Can you have a card that is seemingly worthless in current meta, but you notice a trend in card design that you believe will eventually make that card viable? Obviously this is still a risk, but was a fun situation to think of.

I’m sure the counter argument is “But even if it drops 95%, I’m only in for a dollar on each card. It’s nothing.” They won’t think about how if the have to sell their position, it’s gonna be brutal. If a sealed product dropped 95%, they’d riot in the streets, because of how much they got the SINGLE unit for. A dollar turning into $.05 doesn’t sound as bad as 200 turning into $10, even though buying 200 of the card does the same thing to your bottom line in this scenario.

I think Rudy has some good points in this video, mainly the last point. However I think there are 2 things he overlooked/ I disagree with. First being the if they haven't gone anywhere in the last 20 years why would they go any where in another 20? I would argue the 2017 buyouts mark a new era. It could lead to more (new) people willing to put a $20 spec on some cheap $0.50 - $2.00 cards and somewhat forget about it. The second being people buying a few copies of all the cheap RL cards in a single set for a different approach that could be easier to sell. A play set of all the cheap RL cards from The Dark sounds a lot better then 100 copies of "random card nobody cares about". However sealed product is a better way to go, or even a mixture of both.

That's why I just do buylist arbitrage. You have a price, you have a buyer, all you have to do is buy lower than that. 5-20% profit in 1-2 weeks and you can start at $5 cards or move up to $500 cards. Facebook groups, eBay, etc and sell to Card Kingdom, ABU, or Troll for me. Takes up some of your time, but it isn't my main job... it is my hobby. I just roll the profits into graded cards, EDH currently and 1-2 boxes of everything that comes out. Looks like a wash to the IRS, until I have to sell my collection.

Good video. I don't think a lot of timmys understand that if you buy 1000 cards for $1, you are instantly down a ton of money because to sell them you will incur shipping & fees. No card store is going to buy your 1000 copies of some garbage card.

Damn Rudy, you blew up my spot. While most of what you say is true I took several cards and ran with them. Now no one should listen to me because I am just a friggin guy with a dartboard. I bought out Sandals of Abdallah back in 2017 for $4 each. Still to this day I get a lot of crap from people, "friends", who laugh and ask how my investment is doing. I look at the market and laugh right back with "It is doing just fine" It is doing what it is supposed to be doing. Money held in an asset that can appreciate in value. Another slam dunk was Su-Chi. Get ready. I am a crazy a-hole with a dartboard and when I see a card I like, the market is going to see the effect.

I do see a fallacy in the downside assumptions. Because the cheap reserve list cards are still, well, reserved list cards, if they end up going to the bulk bins then Magic itself has probably tanked. If that happens, the downside floor on sealed product disappears due to no one giving a carp about the game, and the distributor price no longer protects you as they are forced to dump to free up capital. It's happened before in the days of Fallen Empires, Ice Age, Chronicles and 4th -- so it's not as far-fetched as some may think. While I doubt we will run that risk in the next 10 years, it's not impossible. Otherwise, good advice. I'm glad you made this play list of the old advice videos -- good stuff -- enjoying watching the ones I hadn't seen.

I just want to say, to be protective, you have to have something to protect. Being protective of 100k to 1m is different from throwing away 500 to 1k on magic cards, a lot of the people who make these bets are kind of in a position where that chance at a 40x return is worth it cause they work a shitty job or don't see a path forward.

I mean some standard cards are obvious choices. When I saw Snapcaster back in Innistrad days I knew he was gonna be big. I was buying/trading for $15-$20 CAD, got a massive stack and sold at $65 (Could've waited for I believe it's high of like $100-$110 but I'd rather take profits then get rekt). But overall yeah standard investing is kind of dumb, especially for long term holds. These should always be short term investments for the purpose of flipping. Once prices get out of control it'll be reprinted and you'll get rekt.

Sure but by that analogy a cheap $1 reserve list card won't be zero either. So I guess worst case scenario is you didn't make any money, similar to your sealed product example. In general tho I agree with the idea of sealed product vs single card. It's more about diversifying the risk and sealed products have an inherent value that usually grows over time
