🔴CORRECTION: Pillars 1 takes place in the Dyrwood not the Aedyran Empire (I only played 2, which is one of my fav crpgs) Appreciate you all watching. Will be covering this one closely up to its release & beyond. As of now I am still still excited but I did have to temper my expectations a from before. I think as of now it's better to get into the mindset of this game being a "light" perhaps more casual rpg experience, but if we get more than that then all the better! . Avowed reminds me of Outer Worlds (another Obdisidian game), which was fine, but only fine. I don't have high expectations but if the game turns out great i will definately buy it. I recently check out Tainted Grail and I have to say that combat system needs a lot work. It feels worse than Skyrim and TESV was released 12 years ago. Despite great dark atmosphere first person combat system is crucial in these type of games. Chivalry II and Mordhau do it great and these games didn't have high budget, so developers surely can achieve it. I recall Tainted Grail because combat looked decent in videos, however after giving it a try i have to admit it needs some polish (especially because it's polish game). Avowed gameplay gives me similar vibes so I'm not that excited but I wish Obsidian good luck

People really get confused with this discussion. It’s not about realistic graphics and top notch technology; it’s about aesthetics aka what visually contributes to the atmosphere of the game. They did a 180 post announcement trailer and it’s what is causing so much conflict with people. They saw that trailer and that’s the atmosphere they liked and wanted but for some reason we don’t know, internally they changed that completely. The only thing that ties it together is being fantasy and flashy spell effects. Can’t blame people for having different tastes in aesthetics. I like varied styles but I wanted avowed to be a dark fantasy rather than a poppy one. It’s silly to act like that is invalid criticism when you could make or break some games by changing their chosen style. There are a lot of good games which if you gave them my little pony style would plunder just because of style even though the bones remained the same. That’s just reality.

POE1+2 had the amazing setting/lore and intricate class/buff/debuff system and some other neat little mechanics like faction/companion approval. They cut alot of corners to make those elements really shine. Avowed tries to do something completely different but sofar I fail to see what stands out. They gotta have something to hook you / sell you their vision. Outer Worlds had the whacky corporate setting and ludicrious guns. This just looks like Eora light. And I don't mean the artstyle, I don't care about the looks. But IF I am going first person and simplify the combat system THAT much, you gotta give me something else to care about. I do worry about the lack of Classes. It potentially means no Cipher, Chanter, Druid and Rangers, for example. So potentially no Animal Familiars, no Spiritshift, or any of the Chanter and Cipher abilities and spells. I do hope we do get them though. I'd be a bit happier if we did. Also being limited to human or elf characters, plus only 2 companions at a time (and presumably not being able to control them easily) is also a bit disappointing.

I'm just not excited for this one, and every time news is released I become even less interested than I already am. They're restricting our choices of race, going classless and there will be no companion approval system. If I want to play Skyrim, I'll choose my heavily-modded version over Skyrim-lite, and if I want a great story with well-written characters, I'll opt for games like BG3, Pillars of Eternity 1/2 etc. Meanwhile if I want an ARPG, I'll look to Cyberpunk and the newly updated Witcher 3, or, Hell, even heavily-modded FO4. We'll see... maybe Avowed will be a pleasant surprise, and I hope that is the case, but.. at this point, I just can't see anything there that might engage me. It looks like they're trying to be all things to all people, without really excelling in any one area.

The strength of Pillars 1 and 2 were the worldbuilding and story. I can look past lame art direction and Skyrim knock off combat so long as those 2 elements stay strong. But it's been a while now since Obsidian has put something out with a good story behind it.

Unfortunate First person (only) RPG doesnt cut with me , which is a shame cause i really like obsidian , oh well ... at least theres not shortage of RPG's nowdays

Im honestly embarrassed for them that they even showed this. I was looking forward to this, and to a degree still am. But the footage they showed was extremely off putting.

The animations at least look better than Bethesda's rpgs. I'd probably play it if it had a third person option. The only first person games I really play is the Borderlands series.

In terms of people complaining about graphics, just look at Palworlds. Graphically it's not good at all. But the gameplay itself is what makes it so engaging and fun. Games have been going the route of "Shiny over quality gameplay" for ages now, and it's a reason QUALITY gameplay recently has been outshining the "shiny" games. Dark and Darker is another example of this.

I went from knowing nothing about this game to being underwhelmed by the little I know now. I hope something cool is eventually revealed to pull me in.

The lack of classes is very disappointing. Will there even be character creation? Can we choose races, gender, appearance? God I wish this was PoE 3 instead.

After amazing experiences like Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3, this game doesn’t seem to be worth $70 so far. Is good to know it will be on gamepass, i love RPGs and i will definitely try this.

I'm hoping it's more open than outer worlds is, which seems to be what they've modelled animation/graphics after. It just needs enough freedom to let people explore their own solutions to encounters and I'll be happy if magic is varied like it appears to be

Its seems to me that Microsoft bought Obsidian and told them to make Bethesda games, which they immediately started doing. Then after years of fighting with world governments Microsoft bought actual Bethesda and told them to make Bethesda games. I don't want this to happen at all, but don't be surprised if Microsoft closes Obsidian if Avowed's sales don't blow the executives out of the water, because Obsidian is redundant now that they have Bethesda.
@CrazyxEnigma8 ай бұрын
Don't remember the exact dates but I don't think a year passed between Obsidian and Bethesda getting bought up by Microsoft.

This really feels like you are getting paid by Obsidian for promoting this game, downplaying all the crticism.
@WolfheartFPS8 ай бұрын
Well your feelings are coming from ignorance on how sponsorships work. Why not just criticize what I downplayed instead of going conspiracy theory? Then we could have a discussion.
@Davier99998 ай бұрын
I don't mean any disrespect, but this is the kinda video I feel one was paid to do. If you compare this game to BG3 or Dragon's Dogma 2, avowed is by far the most generic and bland. Combat looks bad, the characters' dialogues looks like something from 2007 and the enemies' AI looks nonexistent. We have being playing excellent RPGs lately, but everything in this game, at least so far, looks subpar.
@WolfheartFPS8 ай бұрын
If it was paid for it would have been stated. Obsidian is not going to break the law, nor am I going to, nor would Obsidian trust that I would not rat them out and vice versa. Just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean something was paid for my friend! With that said if you watched the video and listened to my words you would know that I am not praising this as the next huge rpg. The way I view it right now is as a "light rpg" not to be compared to Bg3 or DD2. I have my concerns about it, but I tend to stay optimistic about things. As a light fun outerworlds like arpg it looks decent to me & I am excited to run around Eora.

I like the art style. Combat looks decent so far, but the way it feels to play will be the biggest factor. I have the same hopes for the RPG mechanics. Hopefully it's properly fleshed out and feels more like an RPG than an action game.

I prefer unique art styles over "realism" as I play games to escape reality.

It’s not art vs realism. This current style they chose is very generic. It has no personality.

When I first saw the 3d FPS view in initial trailers, I was not excited. The fact that it is Obsidian is the only factor that makes me on the fence of trying it out, based on reviews when it releases.
@connorwhite87908 ай бұрын
I think it's got potential. Obsidian, if anything, have previously made games with soms very interesting choices (Fallout New Vegas and The Outer Worlds at least) so i hope this is good... Love POE1&2 so hopefully this does them justice!
@Chrupignat8 ай бұрын
I'm cautiously optimistic about the game. I know that Obsidian puts an insane amount of effort into story. Sometimes it's great (Tyranny is awesome), sometimes it's just good (arguably Outer Worlds) but they never treat this aspect of their games like an unnecessary hassle. The issue of Avowed is that this game was in a kind of development hell and it went through couple iterations of very profound changes. I would also prefer darker themed game but if it's good then I'm happy. Especially if the RPG aspect is deeper and more meaningful than Fallout 3, 4 and 76. Fallout New Vegas was and still is incredibly good.

I actually like the art style i hate how many modern games look like their in dark mode and like the vivid colors. Graphics have never been important to me my top 4 games in 2023 are BG3 (obviously), Hi-Fi Rush, Caccon and lethal company. And only one of those is graphically impressive and i don't care about that i care kore about the: freedom of choice, interactive combat and amazing writing. The only thing i fear is that the only game she had heavy involvement outside if just writing was bade TOW and it's first dlc Peril on Gorgon. Both had solid B+ writing but their choice and consequences were severely lacking. Usually the player just getting a slap on the wrist or the choice being negagated by an obvious third option where everyone wins. Hopefully she took that to heart and we will see actual consequences to iur action IE lock us out of content for the choices we make.

Feels to me like a lot of people are too quick to defend Obsidian based on nostalgia. I don’t see why people would go so hard to defend or not be pessimistic about this game. What they’ve produced since New Vegas has been lacklustre each time. I think they are grandly overhyped as a studio and make average games. Nothing looks good enough here to me. Generic uninspiring art direction (away from a dark atmosphere that did look unique), clunky combat with no proper weight, frankly bad voice acting as of yet and the writing gave us NOTHING… absolutely nothing of interest, no class, the world looks bland & boring to me and I put a high importance to exploration in RPGs, 2 races, disappointing companion system… The only positives to me are spell effects and variety of weapons. Like where is the budget? The game direction overrall is not deserving of benefit of a doubt to me. Of course this is just a pre-release impression but I don’t see why they deserve more from me as many seem to push.
@tihonannenkov41148 ай бұрын
If I will end up disappointed about this game, it will not be because of the visuals. THe writing, the story and the characters will be the deciding factor. In cRPGs, for me this is simply the way it goes. What I found the most disappointing in the gameplay video was the VA, which was just bland and didn't fit the character. This is not how I imagine a sharp-toothed huge blue guy to sound.
@Kill3dge8 ай бұрын
Problem with this game is... Dark Messiah exists, and Avowed sholud take as much as it can from this game and add "new things" on top of it. For now combat looks bad, like a next iteration of Skyrim combat, no weapon feeling, no hit reaction, no physics...
@cardassa8 ай бұрын
Honestly, I liked Pillars but not enough where it jumps to my mind when thinking about Obsidian's latest and greatest. I like the first game mostly for the old school CRPG gameplay but the wrold and lore didn't grab me. The second game even less so as the companions and characters felt a little tame and some of them felt like they were supposed to in different setting. So Avowed didn't really catch my eye when it was first announced and even less so as I see more gameplay. I only find first person POV "immersive" in shooters but for everything else I much prefer third person, especially when we are talking melee combat. I am also not that big of a fan of prequels as I would rather learn more about what happened to this world after the events of Pillars 2. I guess I will wait to see how it holds up at launch.
@JT-ir6vw8 ай бұрын
I'm sure the world setting, visuals, and story will all be top notch. I just hope they improve the impactfulness of combat because it comes across as muted and bland with what we've seen so far. The wand attacks look dainty, like harry potter casting a spell after he didn't get fed for a month. It just doesn't look like there is much reaction from being hit, either by the player or to the player. This might just be because of the first person perspective, but I hope they make improvements to it. Either way, I'm sure it will be a great game.
